Trinity Sunday - Also our Feast of Title
Today was Trinity Sunday. Summer is supposed to be here, but we aren’t sure. It was 45°F at sunrise on Mount Olympus and 64°F by the time church was over. Even though we got some of our members back from travel and school, we only ended up with 19 people present for the service.
Gathering Songs
Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.
• Holy, Holy/Amazing love
• How Great is our God
• Lord, I lift your name on high
We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!
Once again, the gathering songs did their magic. When they started playing we numbered 12, by the time the service ended, we had 19! That is a hint that you don’t have to worry about walking in late.
Trinity Sunday
The first Sunday after Pentecost is the Festival of the Holy Trinity. On this day, the church rejoices in the impenetrable mystery that God is triune (three-in-one) -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Lord is one God in three distinct persons. The inner relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in such a way that each of them is fully and equally God, yet there are not three Gods. By the power of the Holy Spirit, Christians accept this incomprehensible mystery as a fundamental article of faith.
Trinity Sunday – Feast of Title
Our parish is named Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity. This is another way of saying the Alpine Anglican Church of God, for God is three persons, a Trinity, which comes from Tri (three) and Unity (one), three in one. Like the oil, there is nothing he can’t do.
Trinity Joke
Jesus said, “Whom do men say that I am?”
And his disciples answered and said, “Some say you are John the Baptist returned from the dead; others say Elias or other of the old prophets.”
And Jesus answered and said, “But whom do you say that I am?”
Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Logos, existing in the Father as His rationality and then, by an act of His will, being generated, in consideration of the various functions by which God is related to his creation, but only on the fact that Scripture speaks of a Father, and a Son, and a Holy Spirit, each member of the Trinity being coequal with every other member, and each acting inseparably with and interpenetrating every other member, with only an economic subordination within God, but causing no division which would make the substance no longer simple."
And Jesus answering, said, "Say what?"
Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today continued the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am. As is customary, the class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:
BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92
We have made our way through the Bible to Saint Paul three pastoral epistles, two to Timothy (62AD and 67AD) and one to Titus in 62AD. Today Father Acker discussed the Second Letter to Timothy, his last letter. In many respects it is his last will and testament. As he wrote the letter, he clearly knew his time here on earth was drawing to an end:
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge will award me on that day. 2 Tim 4.6-8
Like soldiers on the eve of battle, his concern was not for himself, but rather that he would do his duty and concern that he had done all he could do and passed on all he could for those he would leave behind.
He talked of loyalty to Christ in suffering, in service to others, in dealing with apostasy (that is deliberate error) an in separation from both Christ and Paul. It was not that he likened himself to Christ, but rather he felt himself to be His emissary and he was conscious of the responsibility which came with the job.
Sandy Patton read this morning’s Epistle, which was written in the Fourth Chapter of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine beginning at the First Verse:
AFTER this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes before and behind. And the first was like a lion, and the second like a calf, and the third had a face as a man, and the fourth was like a flying eagle. And the four living creatures had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those living creatures give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are, and were created.
Today’s Gospel was written the Third Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the First Verse:
THERE was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Sermon – Three is Enough
While the title of the sermon might be good guidance on beers for 300 pound males and the blood alcohol level to drive, that was not the point. In fact, Father Acker did not even bring it up. The point was from Matthew 18.20:
Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.
While the scripture only requires two, the sermon works better if you concentrate on the number three. The Holy Trinity – Father – Son – Holy Ghost is the Prime Example of Three in Action! Our fish trifoil from the bulletin, the early symbol of the Holy Trinity is another graphic representation.
Three people who gather together to do three things can accomplish much. Three who gather to:
• Pray
• Grow
• Serve
Come together with your fellow Christians on a daily basis to form a triune cell.
•
• Pray for awareness to be lead by the Holy Ghost, or Spirit
• Grow by reading and discussing sound material
• Serve others, focus yourselves outward
To be successful, you need to plan. Don’t add more and more into your life where you have no time for God and family. Concentrate on making your relationship with those around you Christian. Whether they are Christian or not is not the point. You are, or certainly should be.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.
The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!
Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.
Remembering those who have gone before us
Raymond Deveraux died in February 2009. His wife Eleanor asks that we remember him in our prayers. The Deveraux were married for 64 years. As to be expected, there is still a huge gap in her life. She misses him. Pray that she will concentrate, not on their separation, but on their unity in God’s world for eternity in the future.
Repose of the Soul
Carmelita “Endae” Rollins passed away on Ascension Day, 21 May 2009, while on vacation at her ancestral home in the Philippines. Endae, who had cared for Admiral Jackson Arnold of this parish for about seven years, apparently died from advanced cancer with almost no warning. Give thanks for her time on earth during which she touched so many lives with positive results, always with joy in the Lord and that she has joined her beloved husband at home.

Bashir Ahmed, father of Shamim Gray, father in law of Commander Obra Gray for whom we prayed while he was deployed to Iraq and on various carrier deployments, is gravely ill. He has not been doing well in the hospital, it seems there is little they can do for him. He is going to go home and be with his wife and family. Perhaps there he will be able to orient himself and he will feel like eating. Also, his wife will be able to get some rest so she does not deteriorate herself. Please pray Bashir will respond to being home and, if that not be God’s will, a departure in peace to His world for Bashir. Pray also for his family that they might open their hearts to accept all God’s love will bring them.

Mary Garcia fell and broke her hip on 18 April 2009. She had successful surgery and made it home. She is having problems with diet and her diabetes. Please read the note from her husband Gil:
Mary is now at home. She is doing well and improving everyday: however, she is not eating very much. As a result, last Saturday night she gave us a scare. She had a low sugar crash (her tester read low, which meant it was below 25). We kind of knew what was wrong, but she was not responding to sucrose tablets of orange juice. We finally called 911 and the paramedics came and right away put an IV with sucrose and she started responding right away, but they took her to Kaiser Hospital. They kept her at the emergency section until she was stable and then they discharged her at 3:00 AM. She came home and on Sunday she crashed again. This time the paramedics came and established here without going to the hospital. They reduced her insulin and she has been doing much better. Her walking is much improve and and her pain is less and less everyday. I will keep you guys informed.
The VA has finally come through with some home care help. I have a caregiver 8:00-12:00 ,Monday through Friday. That really helps the family caregivers who are trying to juggle days off, vacation time, etc to try to help Mary and Me.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the cards, phone calls, emails, flowers, visits and above all yours prayers. You can't imagine how much they help. Thank you all.

Corinne Cook underwent completely successful major surgery Friday 22 May 2009, in Saint Louis. Please read the note from her father, TW:
Dear Friends and Family,
Dr. Parks completed the rhizotomy around 6:00 PM last Friday. Corinne spent one night in PICU then five nights in a normal hospital room. According to Dr. Parks, the surgery was a complete success, we can see a remarkable difference in her legs and feet. She was released Wednesday afternoon but weather in the St Louis area prevented a smooth ride home. We left yesterday morning with a low overcast and rain but very smooth flight home. Per our request STL departure vectored us around all buildups and turbulence, great guys to work with. Our experience with St Louis Children's Hospital was the best ever, though we hope you or your love ones never need to visit. Corinne starts physical therapy today and hopefully she will be walking unassisted in about three weeks. Kathy is hoping sooner, loading and unloading a wheelchair can be a workout. Daily physical therapy is prescribed for four months, here again mom is hoping for a quick discharge.
We were excited to leave the hospital, but wheeling Corinne out we walked past twenty occupied rooms. Your heart goes out to these kids and their families. Some have been here for months or longer and some will not leave. Your prayers for our precious little girl were answered, but we ask that you pray for those still being treated.
Thanks again for your prayers and concern.
The Cooks.
Airman Donny Patton graduated from the United States Air Force Basic Training School, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, on 22 May 2009. He will attend Technical Training Schools in the electronics field in Biloxi, Mississippi and Wichita Falls, Texas for the next five months before receiving his operational duty station.
Linda’s leg infection, the result of an open cut sustained in a fall, has healed nicely. Please give thanks for the healing.
Tieko received a kidney transplant and appears to be doing well. Please give thanks for the successful surgery and pray there will be no rejection.
Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the western world as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
Free Teen Guitar Class
Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.
Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.
I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion.
If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.

Free Teen Guitar Class performance
Father Ironhand is always looking for performance opportunities for the FTGC kids. They play every first Sunday of the month for our church service, but sometimes it is nice to play a different venue.
Saturday the FTGC had a gig at the Alpine Historical Society. Each year the society sponsors an Essay Contest on local historical topics for the third grade class. The winners are honored at a fund raising lunch at the society headquarters on Tavern Road. After chile and ice cream, the winners are announced and the first and second place kids read their essays.
This year the FTGC provided music before and during lunch. Playing with Father Ironhand were Jonathan Barrett, Nick Patton, Ryan Howell and Jack Arnold. They played:
• Ode to Joy (Ryan H, Nick)
• Aura Lee (Nick, Jonathan)
• When the saints go marchin’ (Nick, Jonathan)
• Amazing Grace (Nick, Jonathan)
• Tenting Tonight (Jonathan)
• Shenandoah (Jonathan)
• Long, long ago (Jonathan)
• Man of constant sorrows
• La Bamba
• My collar is blue
• Always with me
• Smooth
• Horse with no name (improv)
• Surfing with the Alien
The guitarists had a great time and the audience was appreciative. The FTGC has an invitation for next year. All was great.
