Twenty-Second Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Twenty-Second Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a very nice 35°F under bright blue skies. Down the hill at church it was slightly warmer, by the time church ended, the temperature hit 65°F with the same bright blue skies. With quite a few of the parish on travel, we still ended up with 17 people to worship our Lord!

Gathering Songs

Today Nick Patton was on travel, but Jack Arnold and Father Ironhand did a great job, playing:

Closer walk with thee

Abide with me

Jesus loves me

Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty

Gathering songs are a great way not only to allow people to come in a bit late and not to worry, but also to allow us to mix contemporary music and conventional church music in the same service without interfering with each other. Plus, most importantly, our guitarists love to play. Plus, like today, somehow they often draw in people. We started with 7 people and by the time the songs were over we had 17!

Pre-Service Class

Father Acker’s leisurely stroll through the Book of Luke continued with Chapter 6, Verse 7.

6 It also happened on another Sabbath that he entered into the synagogue and taught. There was a man there, and his right hand was withered.

7 The scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against him.

8 But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Rise up, and stand in the middle." He arose and stood.

9 Then Jesus said to them, "I will ask you something: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good, or to do harm? To save a life, or to kill?"

10 He looked around at them all, and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did, and his hand was restored as sound as the other.

11 But they were filled with rage, and talked with one another about what they might do to Jesus.

12 It happened in these days, that he went out to the mountain to pray, and he continued all night in prayer to God.

13 When it was day, he called his disciples, and from them he chose twelve, whom he also named apostles:

14 Simon, whom he also named Peter; Andrew, his brother; James; John; Philip; Bartholomew;

15 Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Simon, who was called the Zealot;

16 Judas the son of James; and Judas Iscariot, who also became a traitor.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle and the Gospel. While they are “lessons”, they are not the First Lesson and the Second Lesson, they are the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained minister.

The propers for the Twenty-Second Sunday after Trinity can be found on Page 220-222:

The Twenty-Second Sunday after Trinity

The Collect.

LORD we beseech thee to keep thy household the Church in continual godliness; that through thy protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ben Lizak read the Epistle for today, which came from Saint Paul’s letter to the Philippians beginning at the Third Verse of the First Chapter. Writing to the church in Philippia, Paul sends his greetings letting them know he has been praying for them constantly. He tells them that the good work God has begun in them will surely continue until Christ returns to them. Paul tells them he prays that they will find more and more joy in following the will of God. Continually reminding people of the joy of being born a new person, Paul prays that their “love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; that ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.”

I THANK my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; that ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

The Gospel was written in the Twenty-Eighth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at the Twenty-First Verse. On the subject of confession, repentance and forgiveness, knowing the rabbis had ordained forgiving one’s transgressors three times Peter asked Jesus, “Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” Knowing Jesus as he did, Peter no doubt expected Jesus to say more times than three, but 490 may have been somewhat more than he expected. In one of the more important stories in the Bible concerning God’s forgiveness of us and our obligation to forgive others, Jesus went on to liken the kingdom of heaven to a king, who was balancing his accounts. He found a servant who owed him, in today’s terms, a million dollars. The man had no money, but promised to pay and begged for mercy rather than have himself and his family sold into slavery as the law allowed to repay the debt. The king forgave him the debt and set him free. Upon release, the man being reminded of his debts, began to attempt to collect from those who owed him. The first debtor he came across owed him $10.00 and had it not. The one who had been forgiven cast the $10.00 debtor into prison. The king found out and bye, bye.

The quote is - Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Not – Do unto others before they do unto you.

PETER said unto Jesus, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellow-servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow-servant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Sermon - The Seven Destroyers - Pride

Father Acker is working his way through the Seven Deadly Sins, this Sunday was on pride and he provided the following summary so you can see what he was trying to get across:

Today's Message: Me, Too; Me, Too; Me, Too—Me, First.

“If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” Mk9.35

We’ve all heard kids saying, “Me too. Me too. Me too.” It has a really different sound than “Me first.” Pride says “Me First.” It’s “Me, Me, Me; I, I, I.” Just a warning: If your iPhone or iPad has a capital “I” you know your in trouble. Pride disconnects you from others. There is no serving others, no lifting up others, and no love of others. But many people end up with an I-Life. Whatever I think is right. Whatever I want. We can end up in a hellish place.

Writer Barbara Kingsolver, a founding member of the 90’s band, the “Rock Bottom Remainders” with various writers: Amy Tan (Joy Luck Club), Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Greg Iles (24 Hours), Dave Barry (Tech-Humor), and Stephen King (who is known for making cameo appearances in movies). Dave Barry said, “We do music like Metallica does writing.” {An aside for you music and literary fans.}

Kingsolver wrote in “The Bean Tree” a scene about heaven and hell, not from the band’s playing. But in Hell they’re starving because they only have these spoons with very long handles—as long as a mop stick. “With these ridiculous, terrible spoons, the people in hell can reach into the pot but they cannot put the food in their mouths. Oh, how hungry they are! Oh, how they swear and curse each other!”

In Heaven the room is just like the first. Same pot of stew, same spoons as long as a sponge mop. But these people are “Perfectly, magnificently well-fed and very happy.” Reaching across the room they offered the food to one another and receive it from one another.

God has reached across to us, and these destroyers take us away from being fed. Pride lies to you that you deserve to be first. It forgets that God created us and should be there at the center of our life. God should be at the center of our life. Our Christ given worship is Communion, where we share together Jesus’ body and blood. One of the most remembered versed of the Bible is “Love one another.” Loving our neighbor as ourselves is not Me First. The divine order for us, the divine plan is 1) Love God; 2) Love Others. Summary of the Law comprises two of our five Biblical Principles.

Our Christ life is one were we need to turn from our Me, First, and reach out to others. Me, First disconnects us from others. Love connects us. Pride is the lie, “My way is the best”; “What I need right now”; “I’m just protecting myself.” The truth is God’s way is the good and right, and the way of a full and abundant life—satisfied and well feed.

You know that “Not asking for directions” is a major guy thing. It’s not just that somebody might think less of us, but if most of us guys are really honest there is a good reason why we won’t stop and ask? It’s wired into our brains. God made our brains with this built-in GPS. So it must have gone wrong and it’s a major character flaw if you need directions. Because I really do know everything I need to know about every place, even if I haven’t been there before. I’m so worried that these people I’m never going to see again might think “What kind of red-blooded American is this guy needing to ask directions.” All the while I’m muttering “I’m never coming back to a stupid place with roads that make no sense.” Or it could be the “I don’t want to inconvenience anyone by interrupting them for directions cause I know people really go ballistic if you ask for directions because it is an affront to Truth, Justice, and the American Way.”

Fortunately as a guy I know that pride is not an issue for the ladies. It has never been the subject of a TV show except the Gilmore Girls.

Worrying about what someone else might think of me. It is really pride. It is what I want, think, feel, desire, for ME. You know what I’m talking about; It’s the inner Me: the Gollum inside saying “For meeeee!”

If I have God at the center, doing the God Plan of Loving God and Loving Others. It becomes what is important for others. Your wife sitting in the passenger seat with the look of “not again” when you say, I think it’s just up ahead. Or the kids who keep really quiet in the back seat, looking and hoping for a big highway marker and arrow.

Today’s Gospel reading is from Mt18.23: Unforgiving Servant. {read the story about the man who’s $100k debt is forgiven and he won’t give any slack to the man who owes him $10.} The story speaks about relationship. Do unto others as you would have them do to you. How great is God’s love that he sent Jesus? God did it for me. God did it for you.

The lie is believing you’ve got the debt under control. You got a plan that is better than God’s plan for what is good and right for your life. Pride will tell you that you don’t need God. God doesn’t even have it all figured out. So you can live whatever way you want. It all comes back to Me First.

We need “God First.” We need more Me, Too, and less Me, First. All the other Destroyers we’ve talked about over the last weeks take us away from God First. Me, First is: I’m leading a good, just, moral life. So I don’t need you, God. I can live it on my own. God, you should appreciate that I’m just doing what I think is good, right, and best. That isn’t living in relationship—It is dysfunctional.

We’re here today. God is reaching out to have you connected, to him and those sitting around you. We are his Church, to be connected, in relationship. We may have failed in our own ways. But Jesus didn’t fail. He opened the way.

I hope you will be connected this week. Pray our prayer for this week. Read and Pray the Collect each day. It is our saying, “Lord, keep me in your fellowship of the Church, in constant holiness by your protection and in my service.”

The only one present here today who isn’t battling with Me First, is the one who sent his Son; the one who offered his life on our behalf on the Cross. It is only in the Blessed Trinity that we will find our true nature. In God we see real relationship. Living without Me First.

Be part of our “loving one another.” Be part of reaching out your hands in love. Be one of those who says, Me, Too; Me, Too; Me, Too!

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?

Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We are loathe to just stop praying, yet some of the entries are a bit long in the tooth. We don’t mind praying, at all. We just want to be praying for what is needed!

Vicky developed a brain aneurysm, which ruptured the morning of 28 October 2009. Vicky’s neighbor Sandy has been updating us periodically and sent this:

On 28 October 2009, Vicky she told her husband Doug she had a terrible headache. As it turned out she had a ruptured brain aneurysm. After four surgeries and several months in hospitals, nursing homes and a rehabilitation hospital she came home five weeks ago. Considering the fact she was only given a slight chance to pull through and the fear was she would be an invalid and might never understand anything or talk again her coming home was a small miracle. Doug prepared for the worst but never gave hope and he made daily trips to Denver to be with her and their boys also went often.

Please pray for Vicky’s recovery and for peace of mind for her family, that they might keep their trust in the Lord.

Obra Gray continues to take day by day, despite still mourning the loss of his beloved wife, Pauline. Please continue to keep Obra in your prayers, and give him the strength of knowing the Lord is with him and will never forsake him. Please God give Obra the peace in his heart he needs, and pray for him to believe the almighty Lord will hold onto him, and not let go until he is in the Lord's arms. Obra needs security of what lies ahead of him, and only the Lord can grant the solace to answer his prayer.

Above all, pray for his entire family to open their hearts to accept all God’s love will bring them.

Guidance and Protection

Christina, Sarah

Wanda for guidance on dealing with an employment situation for which her organization needs protection against those who would destroy and tear down the work of the helping organization; also for strength and guidance to deal with the extra stress and hours required to deal with these problems; and pray for her continued healing during this time of stress.

Economic Guidance and Assistance

Keith has been unable to find any full-time work since his custom home drafting business of 25 years really dropped off last year. He is working as a handyman, doing tile work, painting, home repairs, etc. Their family has a great deal of debt from Susanne’s medical needs. Pray also for God's peace to comfort them and for His leading and wisdom to be very evident to them.

Mark’s business is very very slow, he asks that God point him to new markets and give him guidance in following God’s will that his business might survive and his employees not lose their livelihood.

To Find Employment

Nancy asks your prayers for guidance for her as she seeks employment at both Viejas and Donovan Prison.

Sandra asks that you pray she will be able to find new employment in which she can use her considerable talents to make her new employer more successful. Please pray for her as she searches that she might maintain a good attitude while she looks for work and to look to God for guidance and not her inner self.

Father Keith is looking for additional employment to supplement his part-time stipend at Blessed Trinity. Keith believes his expertise lies in web site development and guitar teaching, both of which he is clearly good at. Persecuted

Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the name of “Separation of Church and State” in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Thanksgiving

Hap, Dru and Jack give thanks for a safe return from travel.

Various Special Requests

We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better. Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!

Please join us in praying for God to fill us with the Holy Ghost, even if (or maybe particularly if) we need Him shoved down our throats, to provide inspiration to grow our little church to the glory of God. Our numbers are static; we need God’s inspiration to figure out the next step. Please pray we will open our heart to the gentle prodding of the Holy Ghost; and not do what we have always done expecting a different result.

Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be continue to be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Please ask God to guide the class to new opportunities to make Him known to others. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

National Prayer Time - If Christians really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we might be speechless. During WWII an advisor to Churchill organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every day at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace?

This thought has been taken up here and now, if you would like to participate, pray every day at:

9:00 pm 8:00 pm 7:00 pm 6:00 pm

Eastern Time Central Time Mountain Time Pacific Time

Stop what you are doing and spend one minute praying for the United States, our troops, our citizens and for a return to a Godly nation. It won’t work unless you participate. Encourage others to join us.

Question that only you can ask

What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something

If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.

Epistle Readers

We post the list of Epistle Readers in the Beadle’s Report each week so you can either plan your attendance or your pre-reading as the spirit so moves you.
