Fourth Sunday in Advent

Today was the Fourth Sunday in Advent, the period including the four Sundays before Christmas; the first Sunday of which is always the nearest Sunday to the feast of St. Andrew (30 November). Advent is a season of preparation and penitence. We prepare ourselves to celebrate the coming of Jesus at Christmas, but we also look forward to his second coming. The liturgical color for this season is purple reminding us of the Kingship of Jesus and that Advent is also a season of penitential preparation.

Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a 45°F under rainy skies; down the hill at church it was even rainier, but the temperature was about 56°F. Even though we had kind of crummy weather, we had 23 people present!

Gathering Songs and Music
Today our lovely and talented organist Marianne Lane was on a cruise with her mom Betsy, so our guitarists - Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played all of today’s music:

• Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God
• Creator of the stars of night
• Amazing Grace
• In the bleak mid-winter

• Hymn 1 - Come Thou long expected Jesus
• God made me
• O come, O come, Emmanuel
• Let all mortal flesh
• Hymn 139 - Doxology

The gathering songs perform a really great function. They allow us to have both singalong type songs and guitar accompanied hymns and still have traditional organ accompanied hymns during the service. The best of both worlds. The gathering songs also give a period for people come in and still not be late!

Anyway, today’s songs were well performed by our great guitar team!

Pre-Service Class
The pre-service class moved to the origin of Christmas symbols, in particular the Christmas Tree.

The Christmas tree is a decorated evergreen tree associated with the celebration of Christmas. The tradition of decorating an evergreen tree at Christmas started in Livonia and Germany in the 16th century. The Christmas tree is associated with St Boniface and the German town of Geismar. Sometime in St Boniface's lifetime (c. 672-754) he cut down the tree of Thor in order to disprove the legitimacy of the Norse gods to the local German tribe. St. Boniface saw a fir tree growing in the roots of the old oak.

The Christmas tree is traditionally brought into the home and decorated with Christmas lights (originally candles), ornaments, wafers and golden sugar-twists and paper flowers of all colours during the days around Christmas. An angel or star is placed at the top of the tree, representing the host of angels or the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity.

The tree moved to from Germany to Britain when the monarchy reached out to Germany for a Prince Consort, and then to America and the world.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle and the Gospel. While they are “lessons”, they are not the First Lesson and the Second Lesson, they are the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church) or by one of the ministers and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained minister.

The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead. Red Letter Feast, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Most of the Red Letter Feasts are dedicated to early saints instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. Some days are particularly special and the Collect for that day is to be used for an octave (eight days) or an entire season, like Advent. For Advent, we have the Sunday Collect AND the First Sunday in Advent Collect, which will be read after the Sunday Collect. The Propers are found on Page 95-96, with the Collect first:

The Fourth Sunday in Advent
The Collect.

O LORD, raise up, we pray thee, thy power, and come among us, and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness, we are sore let and hindered in running the race that is set before us, thy bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

The Collect for the First Sunday in Advent is on Page 90:

The First Sunday in Advent
The Collect.

ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.

¶ This Collect is to be repeated every day, after the other Collects in Advent, until Christmas Day.

Alice Acker read the Epistle for today, which came from Paul’s first letter to the Philippians, starting at the Fourth Verse of the Fourth Chapter.

Paul calls on us to “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.” We are to lead the world to Christ by example, to “Let (y)our moderation be known unto all men.” In this Advent season, as always, “The Lord is at hand.” We are to worry about nothing, “but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Be joyful in all things, not for all things. And in the words we find at the end of the Holy Communion Service, may “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Or to quote another, “Trust in God and Dread Naught.”

REJOICE in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The Gospel for today came from the Gospel according to Saint John, the First Chapter, beginning at the Nineteenth Verse. When they heard rumor of John the Baptist, Jews wondering if this might be the Messiah, sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who art thou?” John told them, “I am not the Christ.” Then, they cast about for who he might be, ”Art thou Elias?”

Confounded, they asked, “Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.” The Pharisees people were somewhat confused and asked, “Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?” John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.”

Interestingly, the same theme is found over and over, as is oft the case with truth. One among you whom you will not see. For, there are none so deaf as those who will not hear and none so blind as those who will not see.

THIS is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Sermon - Acceptable or Not?
Father Acker provided the following summary of his sermon so you can enjoy the message.

Today's message: Left in the package
A gift is wrapped so that it can be unwrapped. We can’t wait until it’s time to see what hidden treasure, what orange haired maniac driver figure is waiting inside (a popular item from the exchange game at our Advent/Christmas gathering this last Friday).

Wrappings and packaging are interesting things. Some very artfully crafted and others are a bit more peculiar. Peculiar as I am, I’m a Monty Python fan. One of the lesser known movies made is Time Bandits (1981). Directed by Terry Gillam, starring John Cleese, Michael Palin, and unknowns like Sean Connery, A boy is swept along with a band of time-traveling dwarves who rob Napoleon, Robin Hood, King Agamemnon (Sean Connery). They jump through holes in time for their robberies using a map “borrowed” from the Supreme-Being.

These Time Bandits are tempted with the ultimate treasure in the Time of Legends and the Fortress of Ultimate Darkness, the home of Evil. Their desire for this alluringly wrapped “treasure” was hidden away by the Supreme Being because it was pure evil.

In the movie Fallen Angel is in his control room watching and trying to lure in the Time Bandits. And everything in the control room is wrapped in plastic packaging. Nothing was out of its package. You couldn’t touch anything except through the wrapping. Everything had to be left untouched and kept brand new.

How sad it would be to get to Christmas Day and not unwrap the gifts left by Saint Nicholas! Gifts are given to be unwrapped and enjoyed. You don’t give someone a new box of crayons or truck stickers and tell them don’t play with them. God gives so that we might enjoy the gift. And God delights that his gifts are good gifts. It’s the coffee cup with the Starbuck’s Flavor Infusions, not the 70’s psychedelic light switch.

God is has a message for us today: “Open up my gift when it arrives.” Long ago, Adam and Eve, the first people God made, walked away from God’s gift—it was Left in the package. It made God very sad, but God knew how the he would bring home the sons of Adam and the daughters of Eve. At just the right time God would send his Son Jesus and Jesus would make it so you and anyone else who wanted could come home to Jesus’ house.

It took a long while before it was just the right time. Some people forgot about God’s promise about coming to his house. They forgot about God’s promised gift. Some people said, “God, I’d like a gift, but I need a UPS tracking number so I can know for sure it’s coming, so I’ll know when to be ready.

John the Baptist, from our Gospel reading for today, was one a tracking number. John was the brown delivery truck zooming up in front of your house. John said, Everything that God had promised is happening right now. This is the time. God’s gift was ready to be delivered.

Everyone knows gifts are to be opened. The wrapping isn’t what gifts are about, but opening the gift and enjoying it. As we’re getting ready for Jesus, as were getting ready to celebrate God’s Christmas gift. We know what’s inside, you can see it through the plastic, but will it be Left in the package?

All the lights of our Advent Wreath are to be lit, with its light shining brightly, so we might be ready to go home with Jesus. We know gifts are to be opened, but like a new box of crayons, or a new guitar, they were given to draw pictures, to make a beautiful sound. Our Advent message is open God’s gift: Desiring to see God face-to-face, Desiring God’s mercy, Desiring a life acceptable to God, and Desiring to unwrap God’s Christmas gift. Be ready to go home with Jesus.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We are loathe to just stop praying, yet some of the entries are a bit long in the tooth. We don’t mind praying, at all. We just want to be praying for what is needed!

Miney Farrell has pain and weakness in her leg. She asks that you pray for strength to work hard on physical exertion required to regain her strength. She also thanks God for the wonderful people she lives with.

Lorraine Winkles is dealing with the arthritis, but her shingles have resurfaced. She asks your prayer in dealing with the accompanying discomfort.

Kay Denton (Mrs. Kay) is still home and doing pretty well considering the bones in her neck and hands are degenerating as a side effect of her kidney failure. Her thumbs are not particularly useful any more. Mrs. Kay asks everyone who is praying for her know how grateful she is for their prayers. As always, she retains her trust in the Lord and her positive attitude.

Natalie (age 10, leukemia recurrence) has not responded to any treatment since her relapse. Please pray for God’s grace for Natalie and her family to give them peace of heart, soul and mind.

Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the name of “Separation of Church and State” in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Thanksgiving

Rachel gives thanks for the safe birth of Kalani David Parker after a difficult labor.

Various Special Requests
We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better. Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!

Please join us in praying for God to fill us with the Holy Ghost, even if (or maybe particularly if) we need Him shoved down our throats, to provide inspiration to grow our little church to the glory of God. Our numbers are static; we need God’s inspiration to figure out the next step. Please pray we will open our heart to the gentle prodding of the Holy Ghost; and not do what we have always done expecting a different result.

Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be continue to be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Please ask God to guide the class to new opportunities to make Him known to others. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

Thought for the Day
Arrogance doesn’t come from having convictions about the truth; it comes from having the wrong convictions about how to treat people who don’t share it with you. Humility doesn’t come from not having any convictions; it comes from having the right convictions about the importance of gentleness and respect [see 1 Pet. 3:15-16].

In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church; the Jews called it 'Hanukka' and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!' or 'Happy Hanukka!' or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!'"

Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.

Macauley Christmas Party
This past Friday, the Tim and Jan Macauley (with help from Stephanie and Chris) hosted their annual Christmas Party, given the time of year, referred to by some as the Advent Party. This is the first time your Beadle has been able to attend, in the past someone always managed to kill themselves and he had to work.

Jan and Tim are always gracious hosts and the party was no exception. They have a lovely home and a lovely family. We were fortunate to have not only Jan, Tim and their daughter Stephanie and her family, but also their daughter Danielle and her daughters were visiting from the North! As can be imagined from Sundays that Jan does snacks, the food was incredible, though it must be pointed out that Jan’s deviled eggs and Holly Lizak’s black egg salad sandwiches were the first to go!

There was a Chinese Gift Exchange, numbers are drawn and you pick a gift from under the tree. Pretty usual. BUT, you can also take the gift anyone else has picked before you. Some gifts changed hands three times! Not that it necessarily means anything, but Nick Patton lost five gifts!

Anyway, your Beadle really actively dislikes this kind of party game, at least he did until Friday night. Now he thinks there is at least one game that may be okay. Everyone had a great time. Everyone, no exceptions.

Beadle apologizes for the paucity of pictures, he was having way too much fun. Plus, it is hard to take a picture when you have a deviled egg in one hand and a black egg salad sandwich in the other!

Thank you Tim, Jan, Stephanie and Chris. What a wonderful time!

Epistle Readers
We post the list of Epistle Readers in the Beadle’s Report each week so you can either plan your attendance or your pre-reading as the spirit so moves you.

Third Sunday in Advent commonly called Rose Sunday and a lot more!

Third Sunday in Advent

Commonly called Rose Sunday

Father Acker’s Silver Jubilee – Plus Three

69th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor

Christmas Caroling

Second Stewardship Sunday

Today was the third Sunday in Advent, the period including the four Sundays before Christmas; the first Sunday of which is always the nearest Sunday to the feast of St. Rose-color may be used on the third Sunday of Advent, signifying for us a lightening up of the penitential nature of the season as we draw closer to Christmas.

Sunrise temperature was a warm 58°F with a very light Santa Ana on Mount Olympus under bright blue skies. The start of church brought a lovely 76°F, which warmed to an even nicer 84°F by the time church ended. The superb weather brought out 25 people for the service.

Gathering Songs

Today we had our normal guitarists: Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold who performed the gathering songs with inspiration:

Hymn 1 – Come thou long expected Jesus

Abide with me

Days of Elijah

King of Love

The gathering songs perform a really great function. They allow us to have both singalong type songs and guitar accompanied hymns and still have traditional organ accompanied hymns during the service. The best of both worlds. The gathering songs also give a period for people come in and still not be late!

Anyway, today’s songs were well performed by our great guitar team!

Father Acker’s Silver Jubilee – Plus Three – 28th Anniversary of Ordination

Today is the Twenty-Eighth Anniversary of Father Acker’s ordination. We are very lucky to have Father Acker with us. While many are aware of his high level of academic and technical qualification for the job, the far more important thing is that he is an exceedingly good man and dedicated to our Lord. The fact that he is well trained and industrious makes him all the more helpful to God’s cause.

Father Acker is pretty low key and not particularly self-serving. We are very fortunate to have Father Acker as our Rector. He likewise is fortunate to have a congregation who appreciates his dedication and talent. The very definition of a Win-Win situation.

Pearl Harbor Day

Today was also another day important to us as Americans. Sixty-nine years ago, tomorrow, “7 December 1941 – a date which will live in infamy - - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. Two thousand three hundred fifty Americans gave their lives defending our country, giving their blood that we might live in freedom.

At least two of our parishioners had relatives at Pearl Harbor on that fateful day. Suzanne Barrett’s grandfather (her mom’s father) father was on a destroyer just outside the harbor on that fateful morning. The crew of the USS Ward spotted, fired at, and sank a Japanese submarine just outside Pearl Harbor.

The Arnolds’ Uncle Jack, Admiral Jackson D. Arnold , was the Engineering Test Pilot at NAS Ford Island, Pearl Harbor and shot down a Japanese torpedo plane.

Pre-Service Class

The pre-service class was put on hold for today only to allow us in theory to allow us to get going early on the Christmas Caroling.

The Propers are found on Page 93-94, with the Collect first:

The Third Sunday in Advent

The Collect.

O LORD Jesus Christ, who at thy first coming didst send thy messenger to prepare thy way before thee; Grant that the ministers and stewards of thy mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready thy way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at thy second coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in thy sight, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit ever, one God, world without end.

Holly Lizak read the Epistle for today, which came from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, starting at the First Verse of the Fourth Chapter.

Paul calls on those who would be the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God to be good and faithful stewards leading their flock rather than commanding from the rear. He tells them not to be fearful of the judgment of man. In fact, he tells he is not concerned of the judgment of men, or even that of himself, but rather that of God. God knows our hearts and when He judges, He “will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.“

LET a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man’s judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self. For I know nothing against myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

The Gospel for today came from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the Eleventh Chapter, beginning at the Second Verse. Now when John the Baptist “had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” John was Jesus’ cousin and the one who baptized Him and heard God say, THIS IS MY SON IN WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED.” Yet, he and the rest of the Jews of the time expected the Messiah to come into Jerusalem in triumph, sit in the temple and rule, commanding, nay compelling the Romans to leave. No doubt marveling at the question, for it was asked of Him who had performed countless genuine miracles, healing the blind, the deaf the lame, “Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” As John’s disciples parted, Jesus talked to those about him. He asked them concerning John, “What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.” Because Jesus came into this world, not to be the King of the Present, but rather the King of that to Come.

NOW when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

Sermon - Acceptable or Not?

Father Acker provided the following summary of his sermon so you can enjoy the message.

Today's message: Acceptable in God’s Sight

We talk and act like people get to heaven all the time. You believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior. You receive God’s grace in Baptism. You pass Go and collect your two hundred dollars. We don’t talk too much about those who “Do not pass Go and go directly to Jail.” In the midst of the rush of Advent and getting ready for the Christmas season we need to keep the bigger picture in mind. Advent is our time to get ready for not just Christmas, but to be ready for eternity. Today we’re Getting Ready For Jesus so that we might be Acceptable in God’s sight. And for that we need to ask for God’s grace to be working in us and for us to cooperate with God’s grace.

The reality is life can be complicated. In reality life can become overwhelming. At times passing Go is not easy. And “getting there” doesn’t go so smoothly. Its as if you’re watching a Hollywood movie. Sometimes it feels like you’re Viktor Navorski.

Tom Hanks plays Viktor in The Terminal (2004). Viktor is flying to New York City from Krachovia when a coup d’etat leaves his homeland in turmoil of civil war and he is stranded in the JFK airport with a passport for a country that no longer exists. Quarantined in the Terminal Viktor figures out how to get by with no money and no English.

In all our talk about heaven, it isn’t really how to collect the luggage carts and collect the quarters when returning the carts to the machine. Being Acceptable in God’s sight is more than mechanics. It’s about your loving God in every aspect of your life. God wants you to pass Go and collect your two hundred dollars, but God wants something much more. The reality of being of disciple is not learning “the tricks.” It isn’t about being Churchie or Religious. It is about being loving. Loving like God loves.

Jesus gave us his Church as a Terminal. The Church is where we learn about and practice loving others with the love of God. In the Church we are to learn what it looks like in action. And we are to start loving God and others as God has loved us. Fortunately, God isn’t the Customs and Border Protection Authority. God really cares if we learn how to love. God wants us to see and know the true nature of his love. In the movie, Viktor falls in love with the flight attendant (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and in the remodeling occurring in the terminal Viktor creates a beautiful fountain for her, his beloved. Viktor was not planning on living in the terminal for months. But Viktor found more than just “passing Go.”

The Third Sunday of Advent our attention in Getting Ready for Jesus centers on being made Acceptable in God’s sight; God wants nothing less than your being a truly loving person; someone who can love as he does. The Collect, our prayer for this week, that as God sent John the Baptist to be a neon sign pointing the way, we asked that as the way, the path, is given to us, we might take and follow the path home. John was a prophet. Prophets are sent by God to get us back on our way to God.

So what is happening in our life? What is it like being in the Terminal? Becoming a person who loves others doesn’t happen instantly. We have to care and do for others.

So here are the three practical things for this Third Sunday of Advent so you might be Acceptable in God’s sight. One, work on loving others, choose someone specific, at your job, at your club, meeting. Love them in your actions this week. Treat them as a truly valued and valuable person in your life. God has someone around you who is doesn’t know this kind of love. Be the incarnation of God’s love. Two, love that person as you find them, who they are, where they are, and in whatever trouble, difficulty, or problem. It isn’t their problem you’re there to fix, but to love them in that difficulty, to support them in working it out, to help them, to love them. Three, don’t go it alone.

Viktor didn’t have much to work with. He had lots of restrictions. But he did things for this troubled flight attendant named Amelia. Viktor got his friends in JFK helping him. The whole crowd of workers in the Terminal mall where rooting for him. What we have here at Blessed Trinity, in God’s Church is a group of people wanting to help you to love others. So, Three, have a personal support team.

Be Acceptable in God’s sight—make it your Getting Ready for Jesus this Advent season: Work at loving someone; Help them in their trouble; and Call on your support team. Have them pray for you and you reaching out in love. Have them give you ideas, and ways to be part of loving others. Have them around you to support you.

So who is the person to whom you are to love? Who is the person that God has put into your life at work, school, or neighborhood at this time? What actions are you taking and planning to be a help and a friend to this person? And with whom have you shared the needs of this person, and what you’re doing for them? Do you have a support team praying and rooting for you? The love of God is to really touch lives and God wants you to be an active participant.

God wants and is working to stamp your paperwork Acceptable. As you are Getting Ready for Jesus you have the way set out before you that leads to heaven, that you might be Acceptable in God’s sight.

There were no reported anniversaries today. We joyfully celebrate Betsy Lane’s 84th birthday with her today!

After Church Hospitality

Once again, food was a bit confusing today, but really great. The clipboard said Holly Lizak, but it was crossed out and Alice Acker name was written in. Then, there was Alice’s egg thing, which the Beadle loveth, and her wonderful chocolate chip cookies; but Mary Lou brought dog nuts and Muriel brought more cookies. All very very confusing and very very good! Thanks to all!

Kyle and his point man, Todd Love, were hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) during a routine patrol. The IED ripped into Kyle's face, resulting in the loss of Kyle's left eye, and severely damaging the retina in the right eye. In early November his left eye was surgically removed.

He will need additional reconstructive surgery to replace his jawbone and his lost teeth. Pray for peace of mind, courage and healing for Kyle. Pray for the medical teams treating him.

Go forth and Spread the Good News – To Mongolia!

Christianity is not about how good you can be, though it in the end makes you better, but about how good we can be. One of our goals is to support those who make the effort to spread the Good News throughout the world. Our parish became aware of a project in which Gayle Young of Birmingham, Alabama was participating in to spread the Good News to one of the farthest points of the world, Mongolia. We contributed a small amount towards her expenses. The trip got put off for a year due to the Swine Flu epidemic, but finally went forward. Here is how it went, in her words:

Dear Family & Friends,

I returned home from Mongolia last Tuesday after I missed a flight to Chicago from Beijing. It was good to be home, but what an adventure I had seeing God work in the lives of so many Mongolians. In 1990 there were 6 known Christians in Mongolia. Today there are over 60,000, including the 23 that prayed to become Christ followers during the 2 conferences.

When I arrived in Mongolia we had 3 days of intensive training. Then we went to Bulgan (our target town, an hour from our hotel) to meet our interpreters. I was paired with a sweet, 33 year old English H.S. teacher named Augii. Each morning the teacher delegates (approximately 280 each conference) attended lectures introducing them to world views, Walk Through the Bible, The Teacher’s Heart, etc. In the afternoons we were assigned our small groups of 5 that we worked with throughout each conference. It was there that I taught and got to know these amazing teachers. The curriculum was based on the Bible and Christian morals & ethics as we were instructing in new & inventive educational techniques. Therefore, we were able to present the Gospel clearly in many different venues. 600 Bibles have now been placed in the homes of Bulgan citizens. Pray that His Word will not return void.

I am particularly excited about the followup that is provided for those who have shown even a small interest in our message of Hope. In place, is a staff of New Life Teachers who will contact those who attended the conferences. They help them get into local Bible Studies and churches.

For me it was a clear awakening to see the Lord of the Universe reach down and present His plan to a country and people that are thousands of miles away. I know that I have lived my life surrounded by a loving family, wonderful Christian friends, and a strong Gospel centered church. I thank the Lord that He has opened my eyes to beyond my world and given me a love for His people in Mongolia. Thank you again for your prayers and support.

In HIs Loving Care,

Gayle Young

Second Stewardship Sunday

Our parish operates on the smallest budget of any parish of which I am aware; perhaps rightly so. Our focus is outward, we have not building intentionally; we have no full time paid staff, intentionally; we don’t have a Lear Jet, not even a small one. It does not take all that much money to fund our parish, but it does take something. Our parish does one heck of a lot with what little we have. We are a very small parish. We have no physical plant to support. Our annual budget is just about $30,000.00. All of our extras, like the Free Teen Guitar Class, the T-shirts, the signs, parades, parties and this report are off-budget items funded by individual directed donations. The annual budget is pretty sparse. But, with this little amount of money we have a major impact on our congregation, the Anglican community and the world in general. If we had more, we would no doubt figure out ways to spend it spreading the Word, but money gathering is not the parish mission.

Keeping the church in operation does cost money. We need each of our parishioners to make a commitment to the church for the upcoming year so that we can plan what we commit to do. It is important that each of you contribute what you can. Why? Two reasons. The first, you need to contribute for your own offering of your “first fruits” to God to further His Work. The second, our parish does need some money to make all this work. Not much, but some. This is not like the TV evangelist who wants your money to buy his jet. We don’t need a lot and we know the difference between want and need. We meet in a school. We use coupons for everything. We never pay retail, but we don’t beg and we don’t steal. We do not want our members to commit money they do not have to spare. That is not the point. The point is for each of us to make our commitment in support of the mission of the parish to the extent we can. No more. If you can afford a million, fine; if you can afford a dollar, wonderful.

We do not want your last dime. We don’t want you to give up eating or borrow to give money to the parish. We do want you to contribute what you are comfortable with. It does not matter how much you give, no one will know but you and the bookkeeper; and the bookkeeper does know who is who. Many people contribute monthly by check, some in the offering plate. No one knows and no one cares, but you. That’s it from the Beadle on the subject; the following is Father Keith Acker’s annual letter on stewardship.

Stewardship 2011

Give To Let God

I don’t talk about financial giving to our local Church very often. Why? I don’t want anyone thinking, “That church is always asking for money.” I don’t want anyone giving saying, “That church makes me feel guilty.” I don’t want anyone giving feeling, “They ought to.” Our Church is a place where we Give To Let God.

I give as a response to God’s rich blessings in my life. I don’t give to God because God is always asking for my money. No, God is asking for my heart. I don’t give to God because God makes me feel guilty. God loves me and seems to have little interest in doing anything but taking away my guilt. I don’t give to God because I ought to give. God is more interested in my loving him, than in a sense of obligation.

Most importantly I need to freely Give To Let God. The bible term for giving is the Tithe. It’s from Genesis 14 after a battle won by Abram (soon to be Abraham).

Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Genesis 14.18-20

The Tithe was the “tenth of everything” that Abram freely gave to Melchizedek, the king of Salem (as in Jerusalem). Abram didn’t give Melchizedek his Tithe for a cause, but in pure thanksgiving. Melchizedek was a priest of unknown origin, unlike Aaron, who was a priest by inheritance. Melchizedek received Abram’s gift and then offered bread and wine. As Christians we think of Holy Communion, but it was also part of the regular prayers of thanks in Judaism. “Blessed are you, Lord God of Creation who has given bread…the fruit of the vine…”

I have many opportunities to give to worthy causes. The end-of-year requests are filling my mailbox. My Tithe isn’t motivated by a worthy cause, even though God is of infinite worth. I need it to be the offering of my thanks. I need it to be freely given to God, allowing God use it to his purpose, out of my hands and into his hands.

Why do I need to let go and let God? I like to be in control. It’s true even in my giving. My hands like to steer my gifts to my causes or requests of my choosing. In these cases I’m giving, but not thanks-giving. So when I Tithe, it needs to be in thanksgiving. I need my Tithe to be an act where I can truly say, “Thy will be done.”

I want to invite you to join me this year in making a Tithe. Give To Let God, to put the gift in his hands for God’s work. The number, a tenth of everything, isn’t nearly as important as our placing it freely in God’s hands. So this year, in “everything,” Give To Let God.

In Christ Jesus,

Father Keith Acker

Christmas Caroling

Last year, Marianne suggested we go Christmas caroling after church. Why no one had ever thought of it, no one knows. What a great idea. We had the opportunity to travel to the homes of Mary Parker, Lorraine Winkles and Miney Farrell to sing with them.

That worked so great we did it for Easter. That worked so great we did it again this year. We had a superb time, from the looks on the faces of those whom we visited, they enjoyed our company.

Mary Parker Lorraine Winkles Miney Farrell

Mary and her two daughters met us outside their home and we were up and singing in no time at all.

Lorraine was waiting for us in her living room. She claimed we were the best group of carolers she has heard this year! Her dogs seemed anxious to join the party, but decided to stay in the other room and howl along. They were pretty used to us by the time we left.

When we got to Miney’s home, we had finally found all the right notes. Everyone there had a great time, even though we brought no figgy pudding!

We left cookies and cards in our wake, taking home memories of parishioners some of us had never seen and other had not seen for some time. We resolve to do this again, maybe before next Christmas. This was the highlight of your Beadle’s calendar year, likely well enjoyed by others as well. If you were not there, you should have been. If you are one of our distanced members, try to do this in your own area. This suggestion comes with a double your money back guarantee. If you try it and don’t enjoy it, send me your gas receipt and I’ll send you a check.

We post the list of Epistle Readers in the Beadle’s Report each week so you can either plan your attendance or your pre-reading as the spirit so moves you.
