Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday.  Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a lovely 43°F under bright blue skies.  By the time church ended, we were at 71°F with humidity hovering at 12 percent.  Weather does not get much better than this in the Northern Hemisphere at the end of August!  Although we still had people on travel, we had 24 people at the service.
We were ever so happy to welcome back Ryan from his seven months of travel to Southeast Asia, as well as Traci and Warren from their sojourn in Mississippi!
Gathering Songs
Today Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played:
Holy Moment
I sing a song of the saints of God
Abide with me
How great is our God
We had mega music difficulties.  The Beadle had the wrong songs on the Powerpoint, last year’s!  The set up for song in the bulletin somehow went wrong, so the last became first, so to speak.  While somewhat biblical, it was confusing.  And, if that wasn’t enough the last verse from I sing a song of the saints of God was the wrong one.  Now the really great news, we made our way through it all and had a great time anyway!
There was more good news, once again the gathering songs did their job today; the gatherers started with 9 and ended up with 24.
Pre-Service Class
Father Acker is continuing on his leisurely stroll through the Book of Luke, today he continued with the Book of Luke, Chapter 4, Verse 40:
Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible.  There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding.  The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday.  If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?”  Remember Sunday is the first day of the week.  There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle and the Gospel.  While they are “lessons”, they are not the First Lesson and the Second Lesson, they are the Epistle and the Gospel.  The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament.  The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The Collect is said by the priest as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained minister.
The Collect for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity follows:
The Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity.
The Collect.
ALMIGHTY and merciful God, of whose only gift it cometh that thy faithful people do unto thee true and laudable service; Grant, we beseech thee, that we may so faithfully serve thee in this life, that we fail not finally to attain thy heavenly promises; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Holly Lizak read the Epistle, which came from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, the Third  Chapter beginning at the Sixteenth Verse. Paul reminds us, “To Abraham and his seed were the promises made.  He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.”  The law, which came 430 years after this covenant, did not supercede the law.  The law was “added because of transgressions, til the seed (Jesus) should come to whom the promise was made … Is the law then against the promises of God?”  No.  “… for is there had been a law given which could have given life, … righteousness should have been by the law.”  For the wages of sin are death, all sin and only those whose sins are set aside by the sacrifice of Jesus are freed from their debt.
TO Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
Today’s Gospel started in the Tenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Twenty-Third Verse.  Jesus tells one of the New Testament’s most widely spread stories, that of the Good Samaritan,
Jesus was talking to the people, “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  The lawyer was about to learn the first lesson of lawyering, ‘Never ask a question you don’t to which know the answer.’  As was often the case, Jesus let the man answer his own question in response to a question from Him, “What is written in the law?  How readest thou?”
The man answered well, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.”
Jesus confirmed his answer, “Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.”
But, the man wanted more and asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”
Among the Jews, it was clear they were to “Love thy neighbor as thy self;” but their view of their neighborhood was not too wide.  From Jesus’ story and question come a clear answer as to how big our neighborhood might be.
And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves?
To this question, the man answered, “He that shewed mercy on him.”
Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
BLESSED are the eyes which see the things that ye see: for I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Sermon  - Urban Legends and Myths
Father Acker continued talking today about Urban Legends and Myths.  He provided the following summary so you can see what he was trying to get across:
Today's Message: Valleys in Life
Myths can creep into our mindset as Christians. One of those is “Valleys in life mean you’ve taken a wrong turn.” This is only a partial truth. What we believe is important when we find ourselves at a low point, in a valley.
What do you do when things get out of control? What do believe when things get difficult? Is it the reason you’re having difficulty, you’ve taken a wrong turn? Wrong choices bring about suffering, but that’s not the whole story. We may ask “How can God let me suffer this and to stay in this so long?” It’s alright to think its not a wrong turn, except until it happens in your life. You know what it’s like, you’re doing everything and anything you can and as quick as you can to get out of the valley.
Satan often uses our weakness in suffering to get a toehold, whispering “You’re in sin and you’re so bad.” You need to know the truth: God is with you; God loves you; God cares about you; and God will never forsake you. Even in the valley God will use you and will work in your life even at its lowest point.
When we’re in a valley we need to ask three question.
1. Why are you in this valley? And there are three different answers.
You may be in the valley because God sent you to the valley. Does God send people to difficult places? Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. It can be exactly where God wants you.
You may be in the valley because you did take a wrong turn. If this is the case you need to know it. We can make sinful choices. Trying to pretend everything is fine when you’ve turned your back on God isn’t going to get you out of the valley--you’ll just be clueless.
Sometimes you don’t know why you’re in the valley. Sometimes life stinks. Sometimes the world doesn’t revolve around us, but we should have learned that by kindergarten. Yes, we do need reminding from time to time. When you don’t know Why, you need to trust that God knows.
1. How should I respond to being in a valley? Not every valley means we should have the same response.
If you’re in the valley because that is were God wants you to be, you need to respond by hanging tough. It may be awkward. It may be difficult. It may be uncomfortable, but this is where God wants you to be. Moses and the Israelites did like being trapped against the Red Sea by Pharaoh and the Egyptian army. You can hear  Moses saying, “God I hope you know what you’re doing.” And the People saying, “What has Moses gotten us into this time? This is the worst possible place for us to be!”
Have you found yourself reminding God, “You can do this. You can resolve this problem.” Or asking, “God where are you? God, didn’t you promise some fireworks or something? God, Am I not where you want me to be?”
And how should we respond If we’re in rebellion? If it is not a mistake, but sin which has brought us to the bottom of the valley. Our response should be repentance, to take responsibility and stop blaming God and other people or circumstances. At times like these we should be praying not for relief, but for God’s forgiveness. We may say, “God when are you going to show up.” But God says, “When are you going to turn to me?”
Joshua and the Israelites were at Jericho. They did what God asked and the walls came down. Everything taken was to be dedicated to God. You need to give this in recognition that God did it. A few days later they’re ready to move on. Joshua sends a few men to Ai, a little town like Boulevard. The Israelites were defeated. Joshua ask God why. Israel has taken for themselves what was my offering--they stole what is mine. They had to make it right. Sin needs to be destroyed. The only solution was to turn around and get back with God.
If our sin has gotten you into the valley, what you need to change is the sin in your life. Real action is needed to change the rebellion into godly obedience. In this case, hanging in won’t make things right. It requires your turning. If you got where you are because you haven’t gone where God wants, you need to have a turn of heart.
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2Chronicles 7.14
Forgiveness doesn’t remove the effects. You don’t repent after robbing the bank and expect that to satisfy the justice system. But God will redeem the journey because you’re walking with God. Seek and run after God. We need to run to God, not away.
How do you respond to the valley when you don’t know why your there. We respond by trusting God and serve with all your heart, mind, and soul. Job had everything imaginable happen to him. All his kids were killed. All his possessions were lost. His friends come over to tell him they were going to help him find his secret sin.
How many are my iniquities and my sins? Make me know my transgression and my sin. Why do you hide your face and count me as your enemy? Job 13.23-24
You may ask, “God, what is up? Give me a break? Just tell me what I’ve done wrong so I can turn back.”
Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face. Job 13.15
We need to be saying, “God, I may not give up complaining, but I will hope in you.” Isn’t this where we need to be in our conversation with God when we don’t know why? We need to be people who can say, “I will not give up; I will hope in you; I don’t like it, but I will live for you and trust in you, no matter what.”
We don’t know if Job ever learned what was going on between God and Satan.
The temptation we face when we don’t know why things are happening is to take a short cut. We want the end to come soon. “If I could just cut this corner, I’d be closer to the end.” You might be able to make it work, but we look to eternity, not short cut and short term. It is an eternal life and faith with God that we need.
1. What can I learn?--Our last question to ask in the valley.
In James 1.2 we find that the testing of your faith...so you lack nothing...because God will give it to you. It will develop and mold you into the image of Christ, to be the person God made you to be.
In every valley we need to recognize Why we’re there, How we respond, and What can I learn. But we also need to realize, where do crops grow? On the mountain tops or in the valleys? Yes, we like mountain top experiences, but it is in the valley where the water runs. In the valley is where the debris is broken down to make good rich soil. It is the place of floods, but it is also the place where the crops grow and fruits are produced in great abundance.
You can live in the valley and get lost in all the trouble or you can take root and grow. Give yourself to the Lord. If God led you there it will be profitable and it will be time with God.
We need to be Psalm 23 people. When I put my trust in the Lord, hi is my shepherd. If I trust in him, he will lead me. He will restore. I don’t have to fear. He prepares a table before me. Goodness and mercy follow me. If, if the Lord is your shepherd.
So who is your shepherd? Who is leading you? With enemies, it can be hell on earth; depression; debt; divorce; heartbreak; hurt; slander; lies. But God sets the table full and running over right in the midst of your enemies. He will be with you. When the valley is the right place, if you’ve sinned and need to turn back to God, and if you don’t know why you’re in the valley. There are no short cuts, but there is the Good Shepherd.

After Church Hospitality
Dru Arnold brought snacks today with the kind assistance of Alice Acker.  In honor of the return of the once lost, but now found Ryan, prodigal son of the parish, a fatted dognut was found and killed.  The fatted dognut was about a foot in diameter and wonderful!  Not as wonderful as having Ryan back, but still pretty good.  Then, there were an assortment of smaller dognuts and courtesy of Alice, huge strawberries and four kinds of cheeses!
Thank you lovely ladies!

Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does.  Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs.  In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.
The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for?  No!  The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you.  We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are.  If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want.  Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team.  Ask for what you want.  It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet.  For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email.  It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!
Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team".  Those names will be said in church and appear here.  Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.
Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know.  We are loathe to just stop praying, yet some of the entries are a bit long in the tooth.  We don’t mind praying, at all.  We just want to be praying for what is needed!

Vicky developed a brain aneurysm, which ruptured the morning of 28 Oc
tober 2009.  Vicky’s neighbor Sandy has been updating us periodically and just sent this:
On 28 October 2009, Vicky she told her husband Doug she had a terrible headache. As it turned out she had a ruptured brain aneurysm. After four surgeries and several months in hospitals, nursing homes and a rehabilitation hospital she came home five weeks ago. Considering the fact she was only given a slight chance to pull through and the fear was she would be an invalid and might never understand anything or talk again her coming home was a small miracle.   Doug prepared for the worst but never gave hope and he made daily trips to Denver to be with her and their boys also went often.
Please pray for Vicky’s recovery and for peace of mind for her family, that they might keep their trust in the Lord.
Obra Gray continues to take day by day, despite still mourning the loss of his beloved wife, Pauline.  Please continue to keep Obra in your prayers, and give him the strength of knowing the Lord is with him and will never forsake him.   Please God give Obra the peace in his heart he needs, and pray for him to believe the almighty Lord will hold onto him, and not let go until he is in the Lord's arms.  Obra needs security of what lies ahead of him, and only the Lord can grant the solace to answer his prayer.
Paula, daughter of Obra Gray, has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) one month ago.  The disease has impacted her far quicker than anyone can believe.  Two months ago, she could walk with the aid of a cane, one month ago she could feed her self.  Now she cannot move, cannot walk, cannot feed herself and has no movement from her neck downwards. Please pray for Paula and her family, particularly for her sons Brian and Jimmy, as well as her father Obra.

Kay Denton (Mrs. Kay) is still home and doing pretty well considering the bones in her neck and hands are degenerating as a side effect of her kidney failure.  Her thumbs are not particularly useful any more.  Mrs. Kay asks everyone who is praying for her know how grateful she is for their prayers. As always, she retains her trust in the Lord and her positive attitude.
Natalie (age 10, leukemia recurrence) has not responded to any treatment since her relapse.  Please pray for God’s grace for Natalie and her family to give them peace of heart, soul and mind.

Nick, age 90, grandfather of Dominique Mimnagh, friends of our Langstaff family members in Perth, is a UK citizen who suffers from various health issues, including what appears to be the onset of dementia. He has lived with his daughter Tina for 45 years.  A year ago he moved to Perth with Tina, who is a permanent resident, on a temporary visa to be with his family.  Immigration officials have refused to renew the temporary visa.  Nick is faced with being forced to return to the UK, where he has no home and little family. Your prayers are so appreciated.  Currently, he is on medical hold because his doctor has said that he cannot fly due to irregular heartbeat.  Please pray the immigration authorities will not stamp his visa with an 8503 which would mean they will not be able grant him an "AGE DEPENDENT VISA” so he and Tina can stay with her sister (who has lived in Perth for 10 years) who she is very close to. If Nick has to return to the UK, Tina will go back as well and that will break her sister’s heart and Dominique’s too.  Please pray the immigration authorities will reconsider their refusal to renew the visa or that the family will come upon a solution that will be in the best interests of all concerned.  Pray also for peace of mind and trust in God for Nick, Tina, Dominique and the rest of their family.

Economic Guidance and Assistance
Keith has been unable to find any full-time work since his custom home drafting business of 25 years really dropped off last year.  He is working as a handyman, doing tile work, painting, home repairs, etc.  Their family has a great deal of debt from Susanne’s medical needs. Pray also for God's peace to comfort them and for His leading and wisdom to be very evident to them.
Mark’s business is very very slow, he asks that God point him to new markets and give him guidance in following God’s will that his business might survive and his employees not lose their livelihood.
To Find Employment
Sandra asks that you pray she will be able to find new employment in which she can use her considerable talents to make her new employer more successful.  Please pray for her as she searches that she might maintain a good attitude while she looks for work and to look to God for guidance and not her inner self.
Father Keith is looking for additional employment to supplement his part-time stipend at Blessed Trinity.  Keith believes his expertise lies in web site development and guitar teaching, both of which he is clearly good at.  Please pray the Holy Ghost will enter into his heart and give him inspiration and guidance to lead him to a job which will use his considerable skills to support his family, bless the company he joins and further God’s Work, all together.
Jack has been laid off from his job as a construction manager in East San Diego County; due to the economy jobs in the field are hard to find.  Please pray that Jack will find a job, not necessarily in the construction, that will allow him to use his considerable skills and talents to make his new employer more successful; guide him and his family is this difficult time.

Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India.  Also, they are under continual attack in the name of “Separation of Church and State” in the western world, as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy.  Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Rachel Ziegler, USAF, her family and friends give thanks for her safe return from a deployment to Southwest Asia.

Various Special Requests
We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better.  Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!
Please join us in praying for God to fill us with the Holy Ghost, even if (or maybe particularly if) we need Him shoved down our throats, to provide inspiration to grow our little church to the glory of God.  Our numbers are static, we need God’s inspiration to figure out the next step.  Please pray that we will open our heart to the gentle prodding of the Holy Ghost; and not do what we have always done expecting a different result.
Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be continue to be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families.  Please ask God to guide the class to new opportunities to make Him known to others.  Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.
National Prayer Time - If Christians really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we might be speechless. During WWII an advisor to Churchill organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every day at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace?
This thought has been taken up here and now, if you would like to participate, pray every day at:
9:00 pm 8:00 pm 7:00 pm 6:00 pm
Eastern Time Central Time Mountain Time Pacific Time
Stop what you are doing and spend one minute praying for the United States, our troops, our citizens and for a return to a Godly nation.  It won’t work unless you participate.  Encourage others to join us.
Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate?  Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material.  Help us help you.  Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer.  Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know.  But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.
I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across.  While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion.  If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.
Epistle Readers
We post the list of Epistle Readers in the Beadle’s Report each week so you can either plan your attendance or your pre-reading as the spirit so moves you.
