Pentecost commonly known as Whitsunday

Today was Pentecost, commonly known as Whitsunday. Sunrise on Mount Olympus brought a temperature of 48°F under bright blue skies. On the way down the hill, we found the marine layer up to 3,200’msl! By the time church started, it was a comfortable 68°F, but cloudy even after church. Our church space was a little over half taken by a school art show, so as Muriel Pappin said, “It is just like being in a chapel. So much more intimate.” Whatever the reason, we had 16 people at church, so it was a pretty close knit group!

Pentecost which is commonly called Whitsunday and the time of Whitsuntide
The octave (8 days) following Whitsunday. In the Book of Common Prayer, the Monday and Tuesday after Whitsunday are Red Letter days, so called because days provided with a proper collect (prayer), epistle, and gospel were marked in the calendar in red ink. "Whitsuntide" (formerly also spelled "Whitsontide") or "Whitsun Week" is derived from Middle English whitsonday, from Old English hwita sunnandæg, "White Sunday", in reference to the white ceremonial robes formally worn on this day.
Whitsunday marks the Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the 50th day after Easter. It ranks, after Easter, as the second festival of the Church. In the West, the Vigil of Pentecost soon became a secondary date for baptisms, with a ceremony resembling the Paschal Vigil Service. (Pentecost is the Greek name for the Jewish Feast of Weeks, which falls on the 50th day after Passover.) As the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles on this day (Acts 2: 1), the name was applied to the Christian feast celebrating this event, popularly called "Whitsunday".

Gathering Songs
Father Ironhand and Jack Arnold played the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.

• God of Nations
• Just a closer walk
• Hymn 243 - I sing a song of the saints
• In the secret

We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!

Once again, the gathering songs did their magic. When they started playing we numbered 9, by the time the service ended, we had 16! That is a hint that you don’t have to worry about walking in late.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today continued the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am. As is customary, the class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92

We have made our way through the Bible to Saint Paul three pastoral epistles, two to Timothy (62AD and 67AD) and one to Titus in 62AD. Today Father Acker discussed the First Letter to Timothy.

Like Johnny Appleseed planting trees, Paul went around planting churches. When he left a church he left it in the charge of an overseer (Greek – Episcopos) and elders (Greek – Presbyteros) These positions evolved into bishops and priests, respectively. The titles survive to this day in recognizable forms.

You might well guess that when the Anglican Church formed in the newly minted United States there was a reason it chose the name it did, The Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States of America. The Anglican Church was noted for two organizational concepts. The first being it is organized around the diocese or realm of the bishop as its basic unit. The second being it is a national church (one church unit to each country) by definition.

The Presbyterian Church on the other hand does not hold with bishops. Their top ordained people are priests or presbyters. We might also note that the Reformed Episcopal Church, of which we are a part, many places in its documentation refers to priests by the term presbyter.

Back to Timothy! Many of the leaders Paul left were quite young, as was Timothy who he left in Philippi, and were in need of additional guidance. Hence, the pastoral letters to provide directions for the leaders who would organize and guide local believers.

As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor devote themselves to myth and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.
1 Timothy 1.3-4

I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
1 Timothy 3.14-15

Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated (justified) by the Spirit, seen by angels proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
1 Timothy 3.16-17

Paul asks Timothy and by extension each of God’s ministers (us included) to keep to true teaching, to not introduce new and improved (but, untrue) theology. To understand that like Christ’s example, our live, if lived properly will mirror his.

Alice Acker read this morning’s Epistle, which written in the Second Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles beginning at the First Verse:

WHEN the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilæans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judæa, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

Alice was on travel Sunday past. She clearly studied up while away for this Epistle: Galilæans, Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Mesopotamia, Judæa, Cappadocia, Pontus, Phrygia, Pamphylia,, Cyrene and proselytes – All in one Epistle!

Today’s Gospel was written in the Fourteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the Fifteenth Verse:

JESUS said unto his disciples, If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words; and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.

Sermon – Empowered by the Holy Spirit – Our daily life with God
This is not actually Father Acker’s sermon. It is what the Beadle remembered from it. The sermon was very good, unlike the summary. The best part of the sermon was when Father Acker flashed a picture of himself at baptism up on the screen. It is good thing he decided to go to short hair. There was also an explanation of how he grew away from the Anglican church in college as he experienced the joys of collegeiant Bible study that involved Cheetos. If you missed that, you will have to ask him about that point. All of that was great and had a purpose. The remainder of the sermon is what follows, at least to the point your Beadle can recall it.

If you are concerned about the world around you and wonder what you should do, Jesus was talking to you in today’s Holy Gospel!

“… I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; … the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, … shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance,”

Whitsunday, or Pentecost, the time of recalling the giving of the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the Counselor (is all the same fella) is a great time to talk about what you need.

What you need is the Power of God.

When you need the Power of God, nothing else will do.

So, where to find this Power?

The Bible is a good starting place.

The Bible is BIG.

Have you considered looking in the Book of Common Prayer?

The Book of Common Prayer is 82 percent scripture, after all.

You need God to point you in the right direction and to do it in a manner you can understand. He has already started, you need to work on your part. Have you considered daily structured prayer? Anglicans by nature are liturgical, that is to say believe in ordered worship. Have you tried it on more than Sunday morning? It works pretty well for a lot of us.

You can start by praying Morning and Evening Prayer. They are found in the Book of Common Prayer starting on page 3. They only take about 20 minutes each to read properly. A total of forty minutes a day. Is that too much to ask?

For most of us, regardless of what we just answered, the true answer is yes. It is too much time and we are not going to “waste it” on prayer.

So, the question then becomes what can we do that we really will do? Father Acker provided a revised and reduced version of Morning and Evening Prayer on a blue insert in the bulletin that will give you the high points in about three minutes. If you only have time for one, do Morning Prayer to start out your day properly. Then just pray your bedtime prayers. You will be amazed at the change in your life.

If you want a blue sheet and did not make it to church, email Father Acker or the Beadle and you can have one.

Wonder why there is not a short form in the Book of Common Prayer? Glad you asked. Check out page 592. There is a “Shorter Form” that your Beadle uses each and every day. Where it says ¶ Here may be added any special Prayers we add the Prayer for our country from Page 36 of the Book of Common Prayer and the Prayer for the President of the United States and all in Civil Authority from Page 32 of the Book of Common Prayer. Then we add the prayers for trust in God and His guidance from Page 596 of the Book of Common Prayer. Three minutes is all it takes. Actually, it takes two minutes and 45 seconds, but we are fast out loud readers.

Don’t have three minutes a day for God? Tell Him that when you get to the great sorting hat in the sky.

New Nametags
We had one new nametag today, Greg Chase’s mom Phyllis Chase.

Birthdays and Anniversaries
There were no reported birthdays today. We did celebrate Diane and Greg Chase’s 38th anniversary with them.

After Church Hospitality
Alice Acker brought snacks today. There were giant seedless grapes, which looked lovely and were much admired. Your Beadle did not partake as he is on a low carbohydrate diet. On the other hand, Alice also made Whitsunquiche, or in the Old English Whitsonquiche. A blend of egg, cheeses and the like it was absolutely great and Alice brought one of the Beadle’s favorite accompaniments, Tapatio Hot Sauce (for which there is no Old English equivalent).

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley was on an extended fish finding mission; in his absence, Barrista Ben Lizak made great coffee, Father Acker made his famous low carb lemonade and, as the Beadle noticed too late to get any, Alice made ice tea!

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Remembering those who have gone before us
Raymond Deveraux died in February 2009. His wife Eleanor asks that we remember him in our prayers. The Deveraux were married for 64 years. As to be expected, there is still a huge gap in her life. She misses him. Pray that she will concentrate, not on their separation, but on their unity in God’s world for eternity in the future.

Repose of the Soul
Carmelita “Endae” Rollins passed away on Ascension Day, 21 May 2009, while on vacation at her ancestral home in the Philippines. Endae, who had cared for Admiral Jackson Arnold of this parish for about seven years, apparently died from advanced cancer with almost no warning. Give thanks for her time on earth during which she touched so many lives with positive results, always with joy in the Lord and that she has joined her beloved husband at home.

Hy cannot put weight on her leg. She does not know why and so far the doctors have not been able to diagnose a problem. She is making some improvement. She asks you pray for her healing and guidance for those treating her.

Bashir Ahmed, father of Shamim Gray, father in law of Commander Obra Gray for whom we prayed while he was deployed to Iraq and on various carrier deployments, is gravely ill. He has not been doing well in the hospital, it seems there is little they can do for him. He is going to go home and be with his wife and family. Perhaps there he will be able to orient himself and he will feel like eating. Also, his wife will be able to get some rest so she does not deteriorate herself. Please pray Bashir will respond to being home and, if that not be God’s will, a departure in peace to His world for Bashir. Pray also for his family that they might open their hearts to accept all God’s love will bring them.

Michele has neck pain, on the 18 May 2009 she is having a myelogram.

Please give thanks for the good surgical result and pray for her complete and rapid recovery. Pray also for God’s gift of strength for her and her family.

Mary Garcia fell and broke her hip on 18 April 2009. She had successful surgery and made it home. She is having problems with diet and her diabetes. Please read the note from her husband Gil:

Mary is now at home. She is doing well and improving everyday: however, she is not eating very much. As a result, last Saturday night she gave us a scare. She had a low sugar crash (her tester read low, which meant it was below 25). We kind of knew what was wrong, but she was not responding to sucrose tablets of orange juice. We finally called 911 and the paramedics came and right away put an IV with sucrose and she started responding right away, but they took her to Kaiser Hospital. They kept her at the emergency section until she was stable and then they discharged her at 3:00 AM. She came home and on Sunday she crashed again. This time the paramedics came and established here without going to the hospital. They reduced her insulin and she has been doing much better. Her walking is much improve and and her pain is less and less everyday. I will keep you guys informed.

The VA has finally come through with some home care help. I have a caregiver 8:00-12:00 ,Monday through Friday. That really helps the family caregivers who are trying to juggle days off, vacation time, etc to try to help Mary and Me.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the cards, phone calls, emails, flowers, visits and above all yours prayers. You can't imagine how much they help. Thank you all.
Gil

Natalie (age 10, leukemia recurrence) is 20 months into treatment for the same type of leukemia as Caroline's and has relapsed. One month short of the year anniversary since transplant, she relapsed. She has been through so much. Her chances of survival are slim, yet they are only chances and have naught to do with her. Please pray for her and her family.

Thanksgiving
Corinne Cook underwent completely successful major surgery Friday 22 May 2009, in Saint Louis. Please read the note from her father, TW:

Dear Friends and Family,

Dr. Parks completed the rhizotomy around 6:00 PM last Friday. Corinne spent one night in PICU then five nights in a normal hospital room. According to Dr. Parks, the surgery was a complete success, we can see a remarkable difference in her legs and feet. She was released Wednesday afternoon but weather in the St Louis area prevented a smooth ride home. We left yesterday morning with a low overcast and rain but very smooth flight home. Per our request STL departure vectored us around all buildups and turbulence, great guys to work with. Our experience with St Louis Children's Hospital was the best ever, though we hope you or your love ones never need to visit. Corinne starts physical therapy today and hopefully she will be walking unassisted in about three weeks. Kathy is hoping sooner, loading and unloading a wheelchair can be a workout. Daily physical therapy is prescribed for four months, here again mom is hoping for a quick discharge.

We were excited to leave the hospital, but wheeling Corinne out we walked past twenty occupied rooms. Your heart goes out to these kids and their families. Some have been here for months or longer and some will not leave. Your prayers for our precious little girl were answered, but we ask that you pray for those still being treated.

Thanks again for your prayers and concern.

The Cooks.

Airman Donny Patton graduated from the United States Air Force Basic Training School, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, on 22 May 2009. He will attend Technical Training Schools in the electronics field in Biloxi, Mississippi and Wichita Falls, Texas for the next five months before receiving his operational duty station.

Linda’s leg infection, the result of an open cut sustained in a fall, has healed nicely. Please give thanks for the healing.

Tieko received a kidney transplant and appears to be doing well. Please give thanks for the successful surgery and pray there will be no rejection.

Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the western world as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Free Teen Guitar Class
Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion.

If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.
