Second Sunday after Trinity - Fathers Day

Today was the Second Sunday after Trinity Sunday, as well as Fathers Day and the Summer Solstice! After last week in the park, the auditorium seemed pretty tame. We aren’t quite sure what the sunrise temperature was on Mount Olympus as the battery is dead on our weather station, but it seemed like about 50°F. We do know it was clear when the sun came up at 0541. Likewise, it was clear down the hill at church where the mercury hit 75°F by the end of the service. With very nice weather, we had 22 people present for the service.

Gathering Songs
Today Father Acker, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.

• I want to know you
• How great is our God
• Holy is the Lord

We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!

The gathering songs worked well again today. When they started playing we numbered 15, by the time the service started, we had all 22!

Fathers Day
Today Father Acker offered a prayer for our fathers, those who are with us and those who have gone before us and brought us to this point in our lives.

Fathers Day is a day we celebrate the role of fathers in our lives. But, it is more than that it is a reminder of what a father’s role should be. A father is to be the spiritual head of the family, a provider of both spiritual and earthly needs, the protector, commander, president, leader and judge. He must live his life for his family. The responsibility is awesome, the rewards incredible. Yet, as a father, your Beadle can assure you, in the words of Paul, we all fall short. But that does not mean we should give up, but rather we must redouble our efforts.

I share with you my Fathers Day card. I can tell you I have fallen short, but it is clear from the card what I must do in the coming year:

Happy Father’s Day Dad!

Thanks for being a good, gracious and very generous father. In particular, thank you for assisting with my studies. Thank you for all you have done this year for our family for Mom and I, and the buddies. We are lucky to have such a wonderful father as yourself! Even though this is a short letter, I hope it properly conveys our respect and admiration for your leadership,

Love,

Jack, Mom, O and the Guys

May God grant me the strength to live my life in a manner consistent with my duty as a father, husband, brother; and to fulfill my oath of office as an officer of the United States of America. I am deeply conscious of my shortcomings and ask God’s help.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today continued the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am. As is customary, the class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92

We have made our way through the Bible to Saint Paul three pastoral epistles, two to Timothy (62AD and 67AD) and one to Titus in 62AD. Today Father Acker discussed the Letter to Titus.

Like Johnny Appleseed planting trees, Paul went around planting churches. When he left a church he left it in the charge of an overseer (Greek – Episcopos) and elders (Greek – Presbyteros) These positions evolved into bishops and priests, respectively. The titles survive to this day in recognizable forms.

You might well guess that when the Anglican Church formed in the newly minted United States there was a reason it chose the name it did, The Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States of America. The Anglican Church was noted for two organizational concepts. The first being it is organized around the diocese or realm of the bishop as its basic unit. The second being it is a national church (one church unit to each country) by definition.

The Presbyterian Church on the other hand does not hold with bishops. Their top ordained people are priests or presbyters. We might also note that the Reformed Episcopal Church, of which we are a part, many places in its documentation refers to priests by the term presbyter.

Back to Titus!

Many of the leaders Paul left were quite young, as was Titus, a gentile convert who he left in Crete, and were in need of additional guidance. Hence, the pastoral letters to provide directions for the leaders who would organize and guide local believers. The theme of the very short book is The Church Ordered and Expectant.

Crete was not the center of excellence in the known world, quote in the letter, an early Cretan writer said, “The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.” Where the sick are, there is the need the greatest. We are all sick, one way or the other. Thus was Titus’ work cut out for him.

Paul wrote this epistle because of the condition of Christian work on the island of Crete, the need of Titus for help, and the fact Zenas and Apollos were going to the island. Paul had begun to organize the work in this field but had to leave before the task was finished. The entrance of false teaching in the form of legalism necessitated a strong stand for the truth. In his task Titus needed clear instruction as well as encouragement. When Zenas and Apollos planned a journey through Crete, Paul sent Titus this letter to help and encourage him.

Paul urges Titus to complete the organization of the work in Crete. He reviews the requirements of elders (priests and bishops) and urges a strong position against false teachers. He gives instruction concerning the various classes in home relations and explains how a holy and godly life is made possible. He exhorts Titus to promote good citizenship, while laying out the reasons for godly living. He outlines his future plans and dispatches greetings.

Marking the ecclesiastical anniversary of his angioplasty, Ben Lizak read the Epistle for the Second Sunday after Trinity, just like he has since the parish was formed, which came from the Third Chapter of St. John‘s First Epistle, beginning at the Thirteenth Verse.

MARVEL not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of com-passion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

John gave us God’s commandment: That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another. We are exhorted to love one another not in word only, but in deed and in truth. We are to carry out the word we have been given, not just to repeat the words.

Actions speak louder than words. If we are to lead people to Christ, we must be in front of them showing the way.

Today’s Gospel started in the Fourteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Sixteenth Verse. This is another of Jesus’ stories. This one is of a rich man who made a great supper; a thing of great value in times of hunger.

A CERTAIN man made a great supper, and bade many: and sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, that none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

Are we like the busy people, are our lives so filled with important activities that we have no time to come to the Lord’s Supper? Think about that when you set your bedtime on Saturday, think about that when you schedule the outing for Sunday morning.

Sermon – Vision of Life with God
Today’s Gospel talks about an incredible feast, a gigantic party, a huge shindig that no one had time to go to. They were all too busy with mundane tasks to attend. The Lord of our feast is God. We have been invited to the event by His only Son.

Are you too important and busy to attend God’s party? Do you have five yoke of oxen that need proving? Things here on earth are important if we wish to keep body and soul connected. At the same time, first things must come first. If we wish to have an ordered life, we must put the first before the last.

God has asked us to an exclusive event. Only the best people will be there. By the way who are those “best” people? They are “the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind” who accepted Jesus’ invitation. The life He promises is vivid and real not like that here in the Shadowlands, where “we see darkly, as through a glass.”

We are exhorted to come to the party and bring our friends, neighbors, colleagues, those “deer huntin’, bass fishin’, straight shootin’, country lovin’, best friends you ever had” who “love baseball, football, and ice hockey too” in particular those “who got to work to get paid, because their collar is blue.” Not just Cambridge, Eaton, Harvard and Yale, but those from some back country trail. No one too poor, too hurting, too sick, too damaged. Go into 4 wheel drive! If that don’t work, get a track.

Yet for all this asking, how often do people accept the offer? Kill the fatted wiener dog and who will show for the party. Frankly, that part does not matter. You do the asking, they do the accepting or not. That is just not your concern. We ask, they can accept or not.

We hope those we encounter will accept the saving grace of our Lord Jesus. All we can do is offer. Do not be discouraged, do not dispair and even more important,

Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in – Winston Churchill 1941

New Nametags
We had no new nametags today.

Birthdays and Anniversaries
There were no reported anniversaries today. We had no anniversaries today, but celebrated Nick Patton’s 13th birthday and Heidi’s 34th birthday today.

After Church Hospitality
Jan Macauley brought snacks today. What a great selection! First there were deviled eggs, sadly Jan’s husband Tim was out fishing so he did not get any, but Ben Lizak and the Beadle ate his for him. There were three kinds of cookies; zucchini-raisin, pumkin-chocolate and chocolate chip. All three verified as very good. A lovely veggie plate, with dip. Almonds. Quite nice, all the way around. Thanks, Jan!

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley was on an extended fish finding mission; in his absence, Barrista Ben Lizak made great coffee, Father Acker made his famous low carb lemonade.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Remembering those who have gone before us
Raymond Deveraux died in February 2009. His wife Eleanor asks that we remember him in our prayers. The Deveraux were married for 64 years. As to be expected, there is still a huge gap in her life. She misses him. Pray that she will concentrate, not on their separation, but on their unity in God’s world for eternity in the future.

Perhaps there he will be able to orient himself and he will feel like eating. Also, his wife will be able to get some rest so she does not deteriorate herself. Free Teen Guitar Class
Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion.

If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.
