Third Sunday after Trinity and Feast of John the Baptist

Feast of John the Baptist

Wednesday was the Feast of John the Baptist. Throughout the year, we regularly commemorate events and remember people who have made an impact on the church through their lives. We call those days feasts. By the standards of days gone by, every day is a feast, but these are particular days. 24 June is the day each year that we bring to the forefront the memory of John the Baptist and review his role in the church. Most people ignore the feast days, unless they fall on a Sunday when they really cannot ignore them. The Roman and Orthodox churches seem to have a cornucopia of feasts; we have far fewer and they can be found in the back of the prayer book. As normal for a mid-week service, Evening Prayer began at 1815 (6:15 pm) and Holy Communion began at 1830 (6:30 pm). The service was over by 1900 (7:00 pm). The entire congregation adjourned to Panda Machi for a feast of Chinese food.

The Collect

ALMIGHTY God, by whose providence thy servant John Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son our Saviour by preaching repentance; Make us so to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth’s sake; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jack Arnold read the Epistle, which came from the Fortieth Chapter of the Book of Isaiah beginning at the First Verse.

COMFORT ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. O Saint John Baptist Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

The Holy Gospel for the evening came from the First Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke beginning at the Fifty-Seventh Verse.

ELISABETH’S full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa. And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, and hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; the oath which he sware to our father Abraham, that he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; to give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

Father Acker gave a brief talk on our role as Christians; how we must emulate John the Baptist in preparing a way in the wilderness for people to come to God. We cannot bring people to Christ. That they must do for themselves. But, we can make the way clear for them. We can make their journey not only easier, but possible.

Third Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Third Sunday after Trinity Sunday and the first real day of summer with no marine layer. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was 60°F under bright blue skies. By the time church ended, we were at 91°F. Even though there were a number of people on travel, we managed to end up with 20 people present for the service.

Gathering Songs
Today Father Acker, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.

•Holy is the Lord
•Abide with me
•I’ll fly away

We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!

The gathering songs worked well again today. When they started playing we numbered 11, by the time the service ended, we had all 20!

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today continued the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am. As is customary, the class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92

We have made our way through the Bible to Saint Paul’s letter to the Hebrews. The letter explains Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the perfect sacrifice for human sinners. Jesus is superior to angels and is our High priest in the order of Melchizedek. Jesus is the Messiah whose coming gives us the superior New Covenant, as compared to the Old Covenant of Abraham. The letter talks of the Priesthood of Christ Jesus and his one Sacrifice, one time, for all mankind, which redeemed all and established God's New Covenant. The letter emphasizes the everlasting priesthood of Christ as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy in His one sacrifice. Paul points out if the Old Covenant was faultless, God would not have sent his Son to start a new one. Writing that people are found righteous through their faith and belief in God's ways, Paul urges the readers to receive God's grace by accepting Jesus Christ.

Paul wrote the letter to show the true end and meaning of the Mosaic system and its symbolical and transient character. He explains the Levitical priesthood was a foreshadowing of the mission of Jesus Christ, and the legal sacrifices prefigured the Crucifixion. The gospel was designed not to modify the law of Moses, but to supersede and abolish it. This was written partly to counter the Ebionites, Jewish Christians who continued Jewish practices while accepting Christ. The emphatic text of the epistle reiterates the new covenant has superseded the old.

Holly Lizak read the Epistle, which came from the Fifth Chapter of St. Peter‘s First Epistle, beginning at the Fifth Verse. Peter asks us to cast our care on God, to let him carry our worries, to trust in him that we might do what needs to be done here on earth, rather than to worry. He admonishes us to “be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking who he may devour”. A powerful visual to remind us to, Trust in God and dread nought.

ALL of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Today’s Gospel started in the Fifteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the First Verse. This is a story of Jesus, rather than one of his stories. The Pharisees were appalled that those who were particularly sinners in their very qualified eyes were attracted to Jesus and even worse, he talked to them, even breaking bread with them. To the Pharisees, Jesus told the story of the shepherd who loses a sheep and searches for it. When he finds it he carries it back to the flock on his shoulders. He goes on to tell the story of the woman who loses a piece of silver and turns her house inside out to find it. That story ends in a very interesting word play in English, “Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece (peace) which I had lost.” Jesus ends the story with, “there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” Having said that, there is also joy when we do not sin, but choose God’s way. And we enjoy it more also.

THEN drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And he spake this parable unto them saying, What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

Sermon – Lost
Consider our mission. We are to spread the Good News. Who needs that good news? The perfect? Not hardly. Stop for a minute to consider who most needs Christ’s help (and thus yours). For a hint, look to today’s Gospel: This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

People come to God when they recognize they need help they cannot get elsewhere. It may be sickness of body or mind or even fiscal estate. They think, “Hey, no one else can help me. Time to go to God.” We come to church each Sunday because we know we need God’s help. We understand how imperfect we are. We may be “better” than the other person, but so little better that compared to God we are no better and hopefully no worse than that “other person.” We know that church is hospital for sinners, not a resort for saints.

When we consider the great commandment to Go forth and spread the Word, we need ask ourselves to whom is the Word to be spread? The LOST, sinners, the unchurched, those who have not the Word. Get the idea?

When we see a homeless person at the church, we invite them in for the service AND the snacks. We do not turn them away or suggest they go to the church next door. We may be able to help them. Not by giving them some thing, but rather by giving them something. We need to be in the world, helping the world, serving God in the world, not serving the world.

The world! The world is big and dangerous. Not to worry about that, but to understand it. We have guidance and protection, but: While you are out there, be careful, for your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. Remember, Christ dined with sinners; He did not join them. Rather He invited them to join Him.

Put your trust in God. The proper rendering of Psalm 23 is:

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

It is not:

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for I am the meanest mother in the valley.

Nonetheless, we are to search out the lost and attempt to facilitate their return to the fold. Not all sheep are looking for the fold. Many were born in the thickets or left as young lambs and have no memory of the flock. That is what it is. We still have our duty to accomplish. Like John the Baptist, our commission is to prepare straight the way for the Lord.

After Church Hospitality
Alice Acker brought snacks today. When you hear diabetic friendly, do you think YUCK? Wrong, again, Buzzard Buddy. Today Alice brought an egg dish that was absolutely great and two ginger bread cakes. Your Beadle loved the egg dish and Warren voted the ginger bread best seen to date!

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley was back from his extended fish finding mission, but quick turned to visit his mother in Las Vegas. In the Master of Brew’s absence, Barrista Ben Lizak made great coffee, Father Acker made his famous low carb lemonade.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does.  Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs.  In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No!  The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you.  We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are.  If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want.  Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team.  Ask for what you want.  It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet.  For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email.  It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team".  Those names will be said in church and appear here.  Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Repose of the Soul

Perhaps there he will be able to orient himself and he will feel like eating. Also, his wife will be able to get some rest so she does not deteriorate herself. Please pray Bashir will respond to being home and, if that not be God’s will, a departure in peace to His world for Bashir. Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate?  Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material.  Help us help you.  Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer.  Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know.  But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across.  While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.
