Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday. The weather was cooler than last week with a sunrise temperature of 62°F on Mount Olympus. By the time church was over we were only at 76°F. The beautiful weather brought out a total of 20 participants by service start.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 140 days by popular demand
The customary pre-service class is on hold. The Ackers are on vacation. Father Acker will resume the class next week.

Sing low, Sweet chariot!
The usual class time was taken up with a couple of extra welcome songs with music provided by Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold. They have been playing additional welcome or gathering songs before the service. It must be working, at the start of singing, just like last week there were twelve people and by the time they were done, the congregation had grown to twenty!

Alice Acker read the Epistle which came from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, the Sixth Chapter, beginning at the Eleventh Verse. Paul continues to warn us of the conflict in our lives between the things valued here on earth and those which are valued by the forces of heaven (God). Writing to the Gentiles in Galatia, using to the rite of circumcision as a symbol for all of the law, he warns, “As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.” Those who are every eager to have you follow the “law” themselves fail to follow it. He goes on to say that Jesus’ new covenant transcends the law and the law no longer has hold over man. For in Jesus there is salvation, may “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.”

YE see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Today’s Gospel was written in the Sixth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the Twenty-Fourth Verse. Jesus tells us, “No man can serve two masters …Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” There is only one first place, only one can be in that place. We either place God in first place or we put something else there. If we wish riches in this world as the most important thing in our life, we place the things of this world in first place. If we follow our Lord Jesus and His instruction, we place God in that first place. But, what of this world? “Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment? Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value than they?” Jesus tells us not to worry, for worry is of no positive value. When faced with a problem, we must do our best, not merely claim to do our best, and trust in God. For, “which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life?” God knows we have need of the things of this world while we are in it, he knows we worry about, “What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?” If we first seek “His kingdom, and His righteousness” He will take care of all our necessities. But we must do as He asks, not merely say we are doing so. If you follow God’s directions, you will be wealthy beyond description. While you will never be “Bill Gates” rich, you will never lack what you need.

Jesus tells us, “Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” We are not to worry, but to our best and let the morrow come as it will. We are to do our best, not merely say we are doing our best. For if we truly do our best, then that is all that can be done and there is no point in worrying.

Using an earlier phrase, Trust in God and Dread Naught.

NO man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment? Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life? And why are ye anxious concerning raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Be not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Sermon – Living a life made for glory
This time of year (returning to school), the media inundates us with “Back To School” ads. The marketers thoughtfully want to make sure you and your kids are wearing the “right stuff” for school, that you have the “right” gear, the “right” things you “need” to succeed in school or even at work. They focus on the external, not the internal. It is not the “Clothes that make the man”, but rather the “Man that makes the clothes.” Yet there is no profit for the marketeers in that thought.

Jesus tells us that our lives are made for glory. Eternal and joyous life is ours for the accepting. We don’t have to even ask for it, just accept it. Yet there are two things he asks of us:

• Live with Responsibility
• Live with Purpose

In the words of Saint Paul:

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5.15-16

Saint Paul admonishes us to take care of what we do, to keep the big picture in mind at all times. The world about us is evil, we need take care in it.

Jesus also asks that we live our life with purpose. God put each of us here on earth to make a difference. It is our choice whether it be a positive or negative difference. Who will we serve? Yet in many respects those who allow their life to be meaningless in many ways work more the devil’s work than those who do evil.

Like Christ be ready with a hand to help those in need. Not to do for them what they can and should do for themselves, but rather to do for them what they cannot do. In this way, you can help them to their feet so they can stand on their own. Recall the Penta Mandatum:

• Love the Lord (heart, soul, & mind)
• Love thy neighbor
• Go…make disciples
• Baptizing
• Teaching

How are you doing with the Penta Mandatum? Who are you serving? Have you done your part for that life made for glory today? Remember, tomorrow never comes. It is always today. So get on it!

After Church Hospitality
Martha Stevens brought the goodies today. Although they are referred to as goodies, if it were a word, they would have been greaties. First and most important were the deviled eggs, then there were cranberry cookies, lemon cookies and pineapple. The Command Master Brewer and the Beadle passed judgment on the deviled eggs as excellent. And believe me, they know deviled eggs!

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley once again took time off from fishing and made excellent coffee. Father Acker got up early, vacation or no, and made his famous low carb lemonade. Thanks!

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the green or orange cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, and then only Father Acker will know to pray for them.

Travel
Traci and Warren are on travel this week.
Stephanie and Alex are on travel this week.

She and her husband Rick ask your prayers for her and the surgeons and medical personnel taking care of her as she undergoes surgery on 4 September 2008. Fran asks in particular that you pray for peace of mind for both Alice and Rick that they might put their trust in God.

Kenny, who is to have eye surgery.

Denise, Father Acker's sister-in-law's niece, is in her early 30's and has started to have numbness in fingertips and toes. There was a concern she might have Multiple Sclerosis. Tests were done on 8 August 2008 andscame back negative. They also did secondary tests for cancer cells that came back negative. They think she has carpel tunnel in her wrists and possibly needs some dental work for the numbness in her fingers and facial area. All the prayers are much appreciated, and we thank God for the wonderful test results.

Joshua Hamilton remains in SICU. He fell out of a car the morning of 27 July 2008. He sustained a closed head injury and potential spinal cord injuries. Joshua has undergone two surgeries to relieve pressure on his brain. He was in an induced coma, the coma inducing medication has been discontinued. He has not yet awakened and the MRI did not have a very positive if he should awaken. We are praying for God’s miraculous intervention and to do those things best for Joshua in his life with God. Please continue to pray for his wife, Tulani, and two children, Isaiah & Keanu, and of course his mom, Jo Ann, and his James brother who is in our FTGC, asking for God’s presence and comfort.

Please pray for God’s guidance in the lives of the ex-husband, John and Sara and that they might hear Him.

George, husband of LaVonda and friend of Susanne Barrett, whose bladder cancer has returned. An update from George's wife, LaVonda:

George finished his 10th and final radiation treatment and starts chemotherapy again. Pray God will bless all aspects of the chemotherapy treatments, and use the chemotherapy to destroy all corrupt, unnatural, cells in George’s body. Pray during the chemotherapy God will protect the healthy cells in all parts of George’s body. Surgery is not an option at this point. Specifically, you are asked to pray for:

• Healing for George
• Pain relief for George
• Emotional and spiritual strength for George, LaVonda, Megan, and George III
• Continued weight gain for George, even after resuming chemotherapy
• Chemotherapy will do no harm to healthy cells, but destroy all unhealthy cells
• George and LaVonda will get peaceful, restorative sleep each night

Glenn Finch – is awake and walking. Glenn was discharged this Thursday! He will be living with Ron and Caralie for awhile. Since he needs 24 hour supervision and help, we will be getting trained this Wednesday by the therapy team. Though we are thrilled to be there for him, it's a bit scary and overwhelming. Someone suggested that we set up a resource calendar defining all his needs, in case there are those who would like to help. So that's what we are doing. It will be on www.carecalendar.org; type in ID number - 6351 and Code - 7647 to get to Glenn's calendar. I'm working on it, so give me a day or so.

Also, if you would like to be a helper in any way, please send me your name, email address and phone number so we can begin a file. Send to normancj@cox.net. Glenn will need rides to and from rehab 5 days a week; meals; TLC visits; people to help him with his therapy homework on the weekends; people to hang out with him, errands, etc. Glenn's Mom, Ron and I really will need some help I think.

Please pray that insurance will give Glenn an outpatient rehab agenda that will last longer than a month so that he can get the most out of this crucial time to work on all the parts of his brain. Thanks for your continued thoughts, prayers and care. Caralie

Evelyn Hunt is just not feeling right. She has generalized shaking, pressure in her head, blurred vision, nausea and fatigue. Although she has undergone many tests, they have not been able to determine the cause of the problem. She goes back to the doctor on Tuesday for more results. Please pray for a determination of the cause of her problems, a cure and a cessation of the symptoms.

Miney Farrell has had pain and weakness in her leg that has been limiting her activity.

Lorraine Winkles is still dealing with shingles (now over 18 months). The level of discomfort varies but the condition is persisting.

Lona Walsh is in significant discomfort, but it looks like it is not Lupus. A recent MRI indicates she needs shoulder surgery on both sides, not great news, but much better than Lupus. She hopes for more information shortly, in the mean time, she asks that you continue your prayers for healing.

Kay Denton (Mrs. Kay) – is home from the hospital now, though she continues to have with heart, kidney and lung difficulties with fluid buildup on the lungs and what may be a form of septic arthritis. She is doing much better. Every so often she has a flare-up of the severe shoulder pain, accompanied by chills and shivering- but the last time it happened was much relieved by Cortisone injections. Also, please pray for her to maintain her positive attitude. As always, she retains her trust in the Lord, she thankful to get her positive attitude back. Pray also for Mrs. Kay’s family and her close friend Len who are under great stress that they might also keep their trust in the Lord.

Mrs. Kay sent the Prayer Team a card and asks that everyone who is praying for her know how grateful she is for their prayers.

Nicole Ethridge - age 27, mother of two - Has a form of liver disease, which is causing her liver to shut down. She is near dialysis and would like you to pray for her disease to go into remission so that she can keep off dialysis and avoid a liver transplant. She asks that you pray for her continued faith and good spirits, as well as strength to take care of her children.

Caroline (age 10, leukemia recurrence) Update on Caroline from Caroline's mom, Carmen, 28 August 2008:

This has been quite an eventful week. It has been filled with joy and concern. Caroline is doing quite well. Her platelets and hemoglobin have both made very nice increases and she is in the normal range with both of those! Her liver enzymes have also continued to drop, but are still on the elevated side. Thank you to everyone who has been praying. One area of significant concern is her white blood cell count. It has skyrocketed. Dr. Rosenthal is not too concerned and assures us that this happens sometimes as the new marrow is trying to equalize. However, it is definitely something he is keeping an eye on. We are praying that her white blood cell count comes down to the normal range and that she is cured and rid of the leukemia.

PRAYER BULLETIN SEPTEMBER – DECEMBER 2008

Grace and peace from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Praise and glory be to the One who was, the One who is and the One who sits on the throne for ever and ever. Amen.

The Primate of all Nigeria, the Most Rev. Peter Jasper Akinola has been moved in his spirit to call on all intercessors throughout the world to seek God's face fervently, spending nights and days on our knees, praying earnestly for our Anglican Communion. At his instigation, we therefore bring before you the first of a series of quarterly Prayer Bulletins, and ask that you join us in praying for the following:

1. Pray for a Spirit-led, united leadership for the GAFCON Primates Council, that they may remain faithful to the teachings of the Bible, steadfast in promoting the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, and uncompromising in the pursuit of the truth of the word of God and the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. Also pray for the GAFCON Theological Resource Group and the GAFCON Leadership team that they may remain faithful, focused and not distracted.

2. Lift up before the throne of grace the Jerusalem Statement, which represents the collective mind of the participants at GAFCON, as revealed by the Holy Spirit, that this statement may be a guide in the pursuit of the two fundamental resolutions of GAFCON, i.e. :

a. that the Bible be upheld as the final authority for the life, faith and conduct of all believers;

b. that mission and evangelism, saving the lost, bringing life and health to the poor and needy, remain the main tasks of the church.

3. Pray earnestly for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit powerfully to bring about renewal, revival and transformation of lives, communities and environments.

4. Pray for a clear focus for the Anglican Church to pursue God's agenda from Scripture, God's authority as given by Jesus Christ, and God's mission in saving sinners and turning them to saints through the work of the Holy Spirit. Pray sincerely that all other agendas be lost, and Jesus alone be Lord.

We count it a privilege to be called upon for this great task in the vineyard of the Lord.

The Lord be with you ,

+Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin A. Kwashi

Archbishop of Jos and Co-ordinator GAFCON Prayer Teams

Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion.

If want to write an article or make an announcement, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to the following address: thebeadle@mac.com.

Keeping Up to Date with the Parish and the World
In an effort to keep us in touch with each other and the Christian and non-Christian world, Father is posting updates at the Thursday Evening News, oddly enough on Thursdays. This is a nice mid-week update for us, drop in and take a look. It is also linked to from the various Beadle’s Blogs.

Bishop and Mrs. Boyce Visit
Bishop Richard Boyce and his lovely wife Cathie will be making their annual visit to our parish on 14 September 2008. After Sunday’s service, we will be holding our annual Beadle’s Party at the Arnolds’ home. This is a guaranteed good time. With the Boyces about, it has to be. If you have never had a chance to talk to Bishop and Cathie, this is your chance. They are really wonderful people and we are lucky that they have committed their lives to our Lord’s cause.

For those of you who do not actually attend Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity on a regular (or any other) basis, but read the Beadle’s Report or somehow hear of the party, you are very welcome and much encouraged to come. There will be maps and signs from the church, or e-mail the Beadle (thebeadle@mac.com) for instructions on how to get there. Church starts at 0830 (8:30 am) and ends at 0930 (9:30 am), we will be leaving for the Arnolds’ at about 0950 (9:50 am). You don’t even have to come to church, although your Beadle would not personally miss a chance to hear Bishop Boyce talk.

Mark Sunday 14 September 2008 on your calendar. Be there!

The near future, as well as Next Sunday
Next Sunday is the Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity.

Come next Sunday and see if Father Acker remembers he is off vacation and there is a pre-service class. See if he remembers where he left off in the Bible tour or he finally tells us what the Green Season means.

What about the sermon? Will he preach on the Gospel or something all together different? Unless you come to the service, you will have to wait until you read the Beadle’s Report to find out.

See you next week on Sunday!

Saint Bartholomew the Apostle superceding the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday, it is also the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, which is a Red Letter Day or Major Feast. Thus, the Propers (page 249-250 BCP) came from the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, rather than the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity. The weather was warmer than last week with a sunrise temperature of 68°F on Mount Olympus. By the time church was over we were at 91°F. The warm weather brought out a total of 20 participants by service start.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 140 days by popular demand
The customary pre-service class is on hold. The Ackers are on vacation. Father Acker will resume the class in September, or perhaps before if he gets bored with vacation!

Sing low, Sweet chariot!
The usual class time was taken up with a couple of extra welcome songs with music provided by Father Ironhand and Jack Arnold. They have been playing additional welcome or gathering songs before the service. It must be working, at the start of singing, there were twelve people and by the time they were done, the congregation had grown to twenty!

Holly Lizak read the Epistle for the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, which came from the Acts of the Apostles, the Fifth Chapter, beginning at the Twelfth Verse:

BY the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.) Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

Today’s we heard the Gospel appointed for the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, which was written in the Twenty-Second Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Twenty-Fourth Verse:

AND there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Often the the Epistle and Gospel build on each other. Today’s are a contrast. In the Epistle, we find the apostles doing well. By their hands were “were many signs and wonders wrought among the people”. So wondrous were they that “durst no man join himself to them”. So great were they, but that the people the more “magnified them. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.” All good things, yet those things went to their heads apparently: for we read in the Gospel, “And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.” So much that Jesus said unto them, “I am among you as he that serveth.”

“If I can shovel spit, so can you.” Jesus led from the front. He did what needed to be done, when it needed doing. He did not look for someone else to do the hard work. We need look no further for an example to follow.

Sermon – No skin off my back! or nose
Saint Bartholomew was one of the apostles about whom little is known, except his message to the world: We are made to know God and to be known by Him. And his end, he was flayed alive and his body crucified upside down in what is now Azerbaijan for converting the Persian emperor’s brother.

The peoples of what is now the mid-east had at best the Zoroastrian’s view of God, a more or less uncaring “natural god.”

We sacrifice unto the undying, shining, swift-horsed Sun; Unto Mithra, the lord of wide pastures, who has a thousand ears, ten thousand eyes.
('Khorshed Yasht,' 1, 4)

Most cared not a whit for their fellow beings beyond their own family. The idea that God would care about them seemed equally foreign to them. Saint Bartholomew not only brought the message that, “We are made to know God and to be known by Him;” but the good news that Jesus died so that we could have everything and that we might enjoy it for eternity.

Like His own actions and His instructions to the apostles, we need to give back of ourselves. When we do, we find there is more of us, not less. We need to make Jesus known in our words and in our actions, serving Him, focusing our lives on Him.

Ask yourself, “Am I serving His will?” “When someone looks at me, will they see God at work?”

The news about your faith in God has gone everywhere.

After Church Hospitality
Holly Lizak brought the after church goodies today. She made her special black olive egg salad sandwiches. Oh yes, and some lovely curried chicken sandwiches, chocolate chip cookies of two varieties and red flame seedless grapes. All really good, except the black olive egg salad sandwiches which were incredible!

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley took time off from fishing and made excellent coffee.

She and her husband Rick ask your prayers for her and the surgeons and medical personnel taking care of her as sheundergoes surgery on 4 September 2008. Fran asks in particular that you pray for peace of mind for both Alice and Rick that they might put their trust in God.

Denise, Father Acker's sister-in-law's niece, is in her early 30's and has started to have numbness in fingertips and toes. On 8 August 2008, she will be tested for Multiple Sclerosis. The test results will take a couple of weeks. Please pray also both Denise and her family to put their trust in God and not worry in this trying time.

Joshua Hamilton fell out of a car the morning of 27 July 2008.

Of your Christian charity, please pray for George, LaVonda, Megan, and George Jr.

Caroline (age 10, leukemia recurrence) Day +34 (after the transplant) From Caroline's mom Carmen Wednesday night:

This week has flown by! Caroline did get out [of City of Hope] last Friday and it was an absolutely delightful weekend. We didn't do much except hang out at "the Pond." We even sat down as a family for a while. One of the first things she did was write and illustrate a new [Fred] book. It is glorious to see her creativity and physical dexterity coming back.

The big news today is that the bone marrow biopsy showed 100 % donor cells and zero leukemia! Caroline continues to look great and the biopsy results show that she is doing great. These results are the best-case scenario. Thanks be to God! We are so thankful for this progress.

She is recovering slowly. She can only eat tiny bits at a time, but it seems like every day she eats and drinks a bit more. I guess since she hadn't really eaten in five weeks, it is understandable that it is taking a while for her stomach to be able to tolerate food and drink.

Tomorrow she is having an ultrasound done because her liver enzyme levels are still high -- they keep escalating. Dr. Rosenthal is not sure why this is happening, but he does know of several possibilities. The levels are not to the point that he wants to do anything invasive, so he decided on the ultrasound. We are hoping that this situation resolves itself. Please pray that her liver gets better.

Thank you for all your continuous prayer. Her situation right now is nothing short of miraculous. She has responded to the unrelated donor marrow like if it were a great family member match and she is healing wonderfully.

We still have to stay up here in Pasadena at least until the end of October because she has appointments at City of Hope two to three times per week and we have to be within a twenty miles radius just in case she develops a fever, or any other issue that would require immediate attention.

Sending God's blessings to you all!

Thanks be to God for His working in the life of Caroline and her family.  His grace is sufficient!

a. that the Bible be upheld as the final authority for the life, faith and conduct of all believers;

b. that mission and evangelism, saving the lost, bringing life and health to the poor and needy, remain the main tasks of the church.

After Sunday’s service, we will be holding our annual Beadle’s Party at the Arnold’s home. This is a guaranteed good time. With the Boyces about, it has to be. If you have never had a chance to talk to Bishop and Cathie, this is your chance. They are really wonderful people and we are lucky that they have committed their lives to our Lord’s cause.

Mark Sunday 14 September 2008 on your calendar. Be there!

The near future, as well as Next Sunday
Next Sunday is the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity.

Come next Sunday and see if Father Acker remembers he is on vacation and there is no pre-service class or if he forgets about vacation, but remembers where he left off in the Bible tour or he finally tells us what the Green Season means.

What about the sermon?  Will he preach on the Gospel or something all together different? Unless you come to the service, you will have to wait until you read the Beadle’s Report to find out.

See you next week on Sunday!

Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday. The weather was pretty darn nice for summer with a sunrise temperature of 59°F on Mount Olympus. By the time church was over we were at 81°F. The lovely weather brought out a total of 19 participants by service start.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 140 days by popular demand
The customary pre-service class is on hold. The Ackers are on vacation. Father Acker will resume the class in September, or perhaps before if he gets bored with vacation!

Free Teen Guitar Class strikes again!
The usual class time was taken up with a couple of extra welcome songs with music provided by the Free Teen Guitar Class’ Cole Davis, Jack Arnold and Father Ironhand.

Tim Macauley read the Epistle, which came from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, the Third Chapter beginning at the Sixteenth Verse. Paul reminds us, “To Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.” The law, which came 430 years after this covenant, did not supercede the law. The law was “added because of transgressions, til the seed (Jesus) should come to whom the promise was made … Is the law then against the promises of God?” No. “… for is there had been a law given which could have given life, … righteousness should have been by the law.” For the wages of sin are death, all sin and only those whose sins are set aside by the sacrifice of Jesus are freed from their debt.

TO Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Today’s Gospel started in the Tenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Twenty-Third Verse. Jesus tells one of the New Testament’s most widely spread stories, that of the Good Samaritan,.

Jesus was talking to the people, “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” As was often the case, Jesus let the man answer his own question in response to a question from Him, “What is written in the law? how readest thou?”

The man answered well, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.”

Jesus confirmed his answer, “Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.”

But, the man wanted more and asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”

Among the Jews, it was clear they were to “Love thy neighbor as thy self;” but their view of their neighborhood was not too wide. From Jesus’ story and question come a clear answer as to how big our neighborhood might be.

And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves?

To this question, the man answered, “He that shewed mercy on him.”

Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

BLESSED are the eyes which see the things that ye see: for I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? And on the morrow when he depar-ted, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

SermonGod for Dummies or How I learned to be a holy person
Today’s sermon was really exceptional. If the summary does not bring that out, the Beadle apologizes. If you were there, you know how good it was. If not, “Sorry about that, Chief.”

As everyone who knows him is well aware, Father Acker is not only a great guitarist and a guitar teacher, but filters everything through a musician’s filter. Not bad for a chemist. Today he pointed out that:

• “Having” a guitar does not make one a guitarist;
• Playing “Guitar Hero” does not make you a musician;
• The fundamentals of playing a guitar are simple, putting it into practice is more complicated, even “with the CD”!

The guitar is not all that different from today’s Gospel. The guitar has six strings, there are only Ten Commandments. Both seem pretty simple until you have to play them out. Our forefathers were given The Law, starting with the Ten Commandments and working from there. The problem was they did not want to live them out, they wanted to hide behind them. Not that they were any different from us. Yet, even they knew The Law was not enough. There had to be more, a better way. Like a young guitarist looking for the secret easy way buying the Guitar for Dummies, they tried to find the book God for Dummies. The problem was and still is, there is no substitute for practice. You’ll never be a guitarist without practice and you’ll never be a Christian without practicing what is preached. The concept is simple, but as the saying goes, ‘The devil is in the details.”

When the “lawyer” of today’s Gospel asked, “Who is my neighbor?”, he should have known the answer. A good lawyer never asks a question in trial that he does not know the answer to. The problem for our Gospel’s lawyer is he was in denial. He knew who his neighbor was, he just did not want to acknowledge it. He wanted the answer to be what he wanted, not what he really knew it was.

Everyone knows the story of the Three Little Pigs and we all know what the moral is. Whether we like it or not, the house that took all the work in the end was not only the best home, but the one that took the least work all things considered.

We often want to take what we perceive as the “easy way out” and we fail to look downstream and consider the big picture. In the end, the real easy way is to do it right the first time. That is what Jesus is telling us. Whether we listen or not is up to us.

Back to the “Good Samaritan”, three guys, two “holy men” and one guy who did what God wanted. Who understood what God wanted him to do? Who was the real Holy Person?

If Eric Clapton asks you to play in his band, the average guitarist would be thrilled to the point of death. Yet, would the guitarist expect to play his way or Eric’s? Would he expect to practice, or just show up for the Sunday performance?

If you are willing practice Eric’s way to play in an earthly band, why would you hesitate for even one precious heartbeat to practice Jesus’ way every day? It is no big deal. Just life or death. But this time it is serious, Eternal Life or Eternal Death. And you get to choose.

When you choose, who are you going to pick?

After Church Hospitality
Dru Arnold brought the after church goodies today. It was a really hard week and a long Saturday. The Under Beadle was heard to exclaim Saturday night, “Oh, no! Snacks tomorrow.” Demonstrating that the dog nut is mightier than the sword, she stopped at the local donut store and brought two boxes to church. While no one liked the dog nuts, they were good sports and all but two were consumed.

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley was back from fishing and made excellent coffee. Father Acker got up early, vacation or no, and made his famous low carb lemonade. Thanks!

New Nametags
We had two new nametags today:

Allyne Woolery Ron Woolery

The Woolerys are residents of Yuma, Arizona and are spending the summer in Boulevard. They should be with us a Sunday or two more. At least they will if they get a Round TUIT. Seems they left with a package, so we think they will make it back.

Caroline (age 10, leukemia recurrence) Day +19 From Caroline's mom Carmen Tuesday morning:

For the first time in months, Caroline is producing her own white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets -- hopefully no more transfusions! The new cells have engrafted to the point that they are now producing the full spectrum of cells that our bone marrow produces. Amazing. Thanks be to God. Thank you also to everyone who has been praying for her.

The Graft vs. Host Disease of her skin is almost undetectable. Her doctor even reduced the steroid. He also came in yesterday and started taking her off of more meds, as he said, "in preparation for her to go home." Caroline is trying not to get too excited, but he is looking at the end of next week (about Day +30) for her to leave the hospital. Although she has a wonderful ANC, the numbers really don't make a big difference to her. We still have to maintain isolation for at least the first 100 days because any virus can bring on very bad things. As I tend to err on the side of caution, the 100 days will probably be more like 6 months. She is having to deal with the many adjustments to her meds. At times she feels really down, but then she will have really good moments, too. Overall, the good moments are occurring more frequently and are staying longer. I am amazed by her strength and grace.

I pray that we have passed the darkest part of this journey. I feel like we have been journeying through a tunnel and I'm starting to see light. You have all been such gleams of light throughout the journey. I thank God for each and everyone of you -- you are all reminders of God's love for us.

Thanks be to God for His working in the life of Caroline and her family.  His grace is sufficient!

3. Remaining faithful in the central task of the Church to mission and evangelism, saving the lost, bringing life and health to the poor and needy

4. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit to bring renewal, revival and transformation of individuals, communities, and societies

5. Anglicans to focus upon God’s agenda set forth in Scripture, God’s authority as given by Jesus Christ, and God’s mission in saving sinners and by the Holy Spirit turning them into saints

a. that the Bible be upheld as the final authority for the life, faith and conduct of all believers;

b. that mission and evangelism, saving the lost, bringing life and health to the poor and needy, remain the main tasks of the church.

+Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin A. Kwashi, Archbishop of Jos and Co-ordinator GAFCON Prayer Teams

Next Sunday is the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity, however it is also the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, which is a Red Letter Day or Major Feast. Thus, the Propers (page 249-250 BCP) will come from the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, rather than the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity.

Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity Sunday. The weather was pretty darn nice for summer with a sunrise temperature of 57°F on Mount Olympus. By the time church was over we were at 76°F. The lovely weather brought out a total of 22 participants by service start.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 140 days by popular demand
The customary pre-service class is on hold. The Ackers are on vacation. Father Acker will resume the class in September, or perhaps before if he gets bored with vacation! The usual class time was taken up with a couple of extra welcome songs with music provided by Father Acker and Jack Arnold.

Ben Lizak read the Epistle, which came from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians, the Third Chapter beginning at the Fourth Verse. Paul reminds us through the Grace of God we can be able ministers of the new testament, on our own we can be in the end no good. If we are able to completely follow the Law, with good intent, we can through that please God, but inasmuch as that is impossible we fall short. The letter of the Law which cannot be complied with is death, the spirit of the Law gives life. That is Jesus’ message, for in the Law is death and in the spirit life. For if there is glory in administering the Law, how much more glory is there in the spirit of the Law, which is Jesus’ message?

SUCH trust have we through Christ to God-ward: not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: how shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

Today’s Gospel started in the Seventh Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Mark, beginning at the Thirty-First Verse. Jesus came in to the coast of Decapolis. The people brought unto him a deaf mute. Jesus examined the man, put his fingers in his ears, touched his tongue and said “Ephphatha”, that is, “Be opened.” What Jesus did here for the deaf mute physically is what he does for each of us spiritually. Through Jesus, we hear the Word of God and are given the ability to speak it. Conversely, there are none so deaf as those who will not hear and none so blind as those who will not see. It is up to each of us to choose if we will remain blind, deaf and dumb or open our eyes to see, hear and speak the Word of God. When we receive the gift of sight, hearing and speech we embark on a new life of freedom.

JESUS, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; and were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

Sermon – How to be Holy People
Today Father Acker talked about how to be a holy person. When you think holy, don’t think “holier than thou” or the like. Think being more like God would like us to be and less like the devil would like us to be. Holier than thou is on the devil’s side.

If you are going to solve a problem, first you need to recognize there is a problem, then you need to recognize the solution and be willing to implement that solution. In this case, the problem is really that we are self-centered imperfect creatures. Following God’s will is the solution to our problem. At one level, we know that, at most other levels, we resist the obvious solution.

In today’s Epistle, from 2 Corinthians 3.9, we read:

For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory. KJV

or

The system which brings condemnation was glorious; how much more glorious is the activity which brings salvation. NEV

The point is that people took pride and glory from the old law, The Law which was impossible to keep without God’s Grace and yet reject the pride and glory in the new Word brought by Jesus. The Word of Salvation.

The system which they gloried in resulted in a pattern:

• Israel sins;
• God’s judgment comes;
• Israel repents;
• God forgives.

Each time, like Bullwinkle, “This time for sure!”

This pattern repeated over and over; written down it brought us the Old Testament. It would have gone on forever, a comfort to some. But, then came Jesus, the New Testament, brining change and an end to the endless repetition of this pattern. In John, Verse Five, Chapter Thirty-Nine, we read:

You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you will find eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me.

Through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, we find the transformation we need to become holy people. Or, more precisely: Whole People, not mere shadows of our potential.

Birthdays and Anniversaries
There were no reported birthdays today. We celebrated the Ackers’ 14th anniversary with them.

After Church Hospitality
Diane and Greg Chase brought the after church goodies today. Their plan was simple, bring about three times as much as you think will do and bring what Greg likes. Turned out to be a great plan. Everyone liked what they brought and nothing was left! There were, but are no more, chocolate cookies, white chocolate macadamia cookies, four kinds of fruit, four kind of cheese, three kinds of crackers and mixed nuts. All gone!

Command Master Chief Brewer Macualey was back from fishing and made excellent coffee.

Caroline is trying not to get too excited, but he is looking at the end of next week (about Day +30) for her to leave the hospital.

However, one thing led to another and while the vertigo was keeping her off balance, she stubbed her big right toe and the nail had to be completely removed. Please give thanks for her recovery from vertigo and pray for rapid and complete healing of her toe.

Next Sunday is the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity.
