Pine Valley Parade
Our parish participates in three parades each summer; Crown Hills / Alpine on the actual Fourth of July, then Descanso the next Saturday, we skip a Saturday, then Pine Valley. The Crown Hills parade is through a housing area, upper scale for the area, with many houses with artificial turf. You know the kind of place. Everyone is friendly and drives a Lexus. Then we go to Descanso. A bit different. The parade is smaller, it has different elements, sometimes riding lawnmowers and wheel barrows. Some years the participants outnumber the spectators. It is a small town. Then, there is the Pine Valley Parade. It would be small but for Corinne Lewis. When she is not being the secretary at school we meet at each Sunday, she is out tracking down parade entries. The Pine Valley Parade is the biggest parade in San Diego County each year. All due to Corinne! Each year we say, only two parades, each year we can’t let Corinne down. It is just the way it is. Then, we have a great time, see much and think, “Wow, best parade ever!”
Some times you see more people than you think, other times less.
We started out with three vehicles and picked up two more as we went along, we ended up with a parade entry of five green trucks. Kurt and his friends and family had seen us at a couple previous parades. Numbers count. You should have heard the comments about the Army of God as we passed the announcer’s booth!
After the parade, we went back to the Arnold Wheeled Vehicle Museum and had lunch, or breakfast depending on your perspective. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken legs. Potato salad, beans, coleslaw. Excellent eating!
All in all, it was a great day. If you were there, you know. If you were not, you don’t. But, we had a great time. Join us next time.
Seventh Sunday after Trinity
Today was the Seventh Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a lovely 63°F under bright blue skies. By the time church ended, we were at 88°F. With several people on travel, we still ended up with 18 people, not bad for a summer.
Gathering Songs
Today Jack Arnold was on travel to Wisconsin with Greg Chase (see the travel information at the end of the newsletter), thus the entire guitar load fell on Father Ironhand and Nick Patton to play the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.

We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!
The gathering songs worked pretty well todat. When they started playing we numbered 12, by the time the service started, we had 18, a fifty percent gain!
Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today was the final chapter in the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am.
As is customary, the class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:
BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92
With the Old Testament long done, we finished the New Testament with The Revelation of Saint John the Divine!
The Book of Revelation, or Book of the Apocalypse, was written by Saint John while he living on the Greek island of Patmos in exile. In Revelation, he writes to the seven Christian churches in Asia to relate two apocalyptic visions he has had. John of Patmos is often referred to as John the Divine, or John the Theologian, and the message he received is considered divine. Apocalypse is a Greek word for revelation, or uncovering, and divine an old Anglican usage meaning theologian. He is also known as the Eagle of Patmos and John the Seer.
Although now known as the "Book of Revelation", the title found on some of the earliest manuscripts is "The Apocalypse of John" and the most common title found on later manuscripts is "The Apocalypse of the Theologian.” In English, apocalypse is often rendered as revelation, since the literal meaning of the Greek word is "the act of revealing or unveiling", i.e., "revelation". Some later manuscripts add Evangelist or Apostle to the title. The book itself effectively includes a title in its opening words: "The Revelation of Jesus Christ".
After a short introduction (ch. 1:1–10), the book presents a brief account of the author. The first vision (1:11–3:22), related by "one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle", speaking with "a great voice, as of a trumpet", is a statement addressing the seven churches of Asia. The second vision, which makes up the rest of the book (chs. 4–22), begins with "a door … opened in the sky" and describes what some might call the end of the world— or more properly, the end of the age, in which Satan's rule through Man is destroyed by the Messiah. These events are foreseen: the Great Tribulation, the Campaign of Armageddon, the Second Coming of the Messiah with the restoration of peace to the world and His 1,000 year reign, the imprisonment of Satan (portrayed as a dragon) until he is 'loosed' for the final rebellion, God's final judgment over Satan, the Great White throne judgment, and the ushering in of the New Heavens and New Earth.
Revelation is considered by some to be one of the most controversial and difficult books of the Bible, with many diverse interpretations of the meanings of the various names and events in the account. Protestant founder Martin Luther at first considered Revelation to be "neither apostolic nor prophetic" and stated that "Christ is neither taught nor known in it", and placed it in his Antilegomena. John Calvin believed the book to be canonical, yet it was the only New Testament book on which he did not write a commentary. In the 4th century, Gregory of Nazianzus and other bishops argued against including this book in the New Testament canon, chiefly because of the difficulties of interpreting it and the danger for abuse. Christians in Syria also reject it because of the Montanists' heavy reliance on it. In the 9th century, it was included with the Apocalypse of Peter among "disputed" books in the Stichometry of St. Nicephorus, Patriarch of Constantinople. In the end it was included in the accepted canon, although it remains the only book of the New Testament that is not read within the Divine Liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Artists throughout the centuries have portrayed the visions described by John. An interesting similarity between the description of the "Ancient of Days" of Daniel chapter 7 and of "the Son of Man" of Revelation 1:13-16 occurs. "I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head was like the pure wool..." (Daniel 7:9 KJV) "And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;" (Revelation 1:13-14 KJV).
The book ties together many parts of the Old Testament and brings them together to a single point, in the end, GOD WINS.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle, normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament, and the Gospel, a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the priest as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained priest.

Jan Macauley read the Epistle, which was written in the Sixth Chapter of Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans beginning at the Nineteenth Verse. Paul reminds us that when we strive above all else for the things of this world, we gain nothing we can take with us to the next. “For, when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.” Conversely, if we will be servants of God (righteousness) we can be free from the devil sin). “… the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. If we will follow God, we will live, not only forever in the next world, but better in this world.
I SPEAK after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Today’s Gospel was written in the Eighth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Mark beginning at the First Verse. Jesus had been in the wilderness teaching a multitude, some four thousand in number. In those pre-restaurant on every corner days, the people had been without food and were hungry. Jesus was concerned and inventoried their supplies, seven loaves and a few small fishes. He gave thanks to God, and commanded the food to be set out before the people. When they had eaten their fill, the scraps gathered up from the seven loaves filled seven baskets.
IN those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: and if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

The word of the week is Abilities. God has given us each abilities to be used for His purpose. We each have at least one, no matter how clumsy in one area or the other, we each have at least one ability we can use to further His Work. When you think of abilities, be specific, be honest. We all know Hap is not a great singer, but he does have the ability to make the rest of us sing louder (to drown him out of course). That is a good example. We all have a purpose in life, even if it is only to serve as a bad example.
Yet there is more than that, think of the abilities in the field of Art:
Banners, Calligraphy, Ceramics, Cartooning, Dancing, Flower Arranging, Humor, Jewelry, Knitting/Crocheting, Painting (water, oil), Photography, Quilting, Scrap booking, Sewing, Sketching, Woodcarving, Sculpting, the list goes on and on.
Specifics, not generalities. You need to take your specific talents or abilities and put them to real use for God’s glory. There is a way, you need to find it. God will show you the way, if you will listen to Him. If He could get the stiff-necked Jews to build a Ark, He can guide you:

There is no disrespect intended, but speaking of abilities, Jan has the specific ability to make the world’s best deviled eggs. Most of all, she uses that ability.
There were also a plethora of other snacks, two kinds of cookies (Warren found the white icing ones made excellent communion wafer subsitutes), baby quiches, cherry tomatoes, red flame seedless grapes and did I mention deviled eggs?
Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley had the duty today, coffee was great! Father Acker made his low carb lemonade. The lemonade was great and due to the temperature, it was gone!

Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.
The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!
Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Bay Bigbee passed away Thursday 2 July 2009 at 1620 as the result of liver failure due apparent cancer in the organ. This is accompanied by kidney failure and other internal organ damage and infection. Please pray for God’s grace for Bay, as well as comfort and guidance for his wife Michelle.
Lucrecia passed away due to cancer. Please pray for the repose of her soul and comfort for her family and friends who remain.
Ron L, age 59, a good friend of the Hinrichs, passed away this weekend after falling in the river. Please pray for the repose of his soul and for comfort and strength for his wife Jeri and son Mike. Pray also for his friends and family who remain behind.

Jackie was involved in a rollover car accident, her passenger was not injured, but she sustained a serious head injury. She is in an induced coma. Please pray the swelling will subside and she will regain consciousness and return to a normal life. Pray for the medical team treating her that they might do their best. Pray for her and her family who are very worried about her that they might lay their worries out for God to carry.
Bashir Ahmed, father of Shamim Gray, father in law of Commander Obra Gray for whom we prayed while he was deployed to Iraq and on various carrier deployments, is gravely ill. Bashir lives in London. He has been in the hospital for some time, it seems there is little they can do for him. Bashir had a major stroke the night of 15 July 2009. He is still in ICU. Shamim sorted out a private nursing agency to sit with Bashir three nights out of the week, since her mum is so tired, and refuses to leave him alone despite there being nurses in the ward area. That way Mum gets to sleep at home every other night. Please pray that the medical staff will do their best for him. Please pray God will deliver a miraculous recovery for Bashir; if that not be God’s will, a departure in peace to His world for him. Please pray also Mum will be able to get some rest so she does not deteriorate herself. Shamim keeps her faith in the Lord. Above all, please pray also for his family to open their hearts to accept all God’s love will bring them.
Tom S, recovering from brain surgery and continuing radiation treatment.
Maureen is back in the hospital with shortness of breath and irregular heartbeat. She is now feeling better, but they are keeping her in the hospital to monitor her condition. So please continue to pray for healing. The doctors don’t have a clue other than things pointing to the suspected infection and anemia, but they haven’t figured out what is going on—pray for guidance for her doctors. Maureen is being closely monitored in the hospital and continues to feel better. Her hemoglobin is getting close to normal (good news on the anemia front).
Vera Zimmers had successful surgery on Monday for early stage two colon cancer. That is the end of the treatment, no chemotherapy. Please pray for a complete recovery.
Sonny Discar is in Grossmont Hospital with H1H1 virus - Swine flu, which he apparently contacted in France. In addition, he has staph infection. This will likely lengthen his ICU stay and can delay breathing on his own again. Sonny’s family asks that we pray the staph infection be eradicated within Sonny’s body; that those who are frightened of the Swine Flu be at peace; that Sonny’s body fight this disease effectively; that the doctors identify each situation and choose the best treatment method; for his family to walk in peace and strength; for Sonny to begin breathing on his own again; for his wife Melinda and his children and family to trust the Lord and bring encouragement to each other.
Phil, Fran Dexter’s cousin, had a pacemaker installed Sunday 21 June 2009. Please pray for his rapid and complete recovery. Please pray also Phil, his wife Sandy and their family will put their trust in God and accept the peace God’s love will give them.
Eunice, Fran Dexter’s aunt, had surgery on Wednesday 8 July 2009 and is in rehabilitation. In particular pray for her to accept the help God will give her to lift her spirits. Pray also for her family that they also might accept God’s help, put their trust in God and accept the peace God’s love will give them.
Madelyn Calvert born Sunday 7 June 2009 to Sarah at 24 weeks and one pound seven ounces. She is doing well and now weighs TWO POUNDS! Thanks be to God for her continued growth. Please pray Madelyn will continue to grow and for God’s love for her and her family on the roller coaster of ups and downs. Pray for them to reach out to those around them who would provide support with God’s help. Pray for the medical personnel taking care of Madelyn.
Mark Wilson underwent skin cancer surgery on his face 21 May 2009. He just completed four weeks of radiation treatment. He is concerned about the effect this will have on his business. Please pray for his peace of mind and well as remission of the cancer.
Hy cannot put much weight on her leg. She does not know why and so far the doctors have not been able to diagnose a problem. But, things are much better and she is getting around on using a cane. She asks you pray for her healing and guidance for those treating her.
Michele has neck pain, on the 18 May 2009 she is having a myelogram.
Mary Garcia fell and broke her hip on 18 April 2009. She had successful surgery and made it home. She is having problems with diet and her diabetes. Please pray for Mary to accept God’s help with her various difficulties and also for Gil to have strength to care for her.
Lise, originally diagnosed with "peritoneal cancer", has undergone multiple surgeries and chemotherapy. Lise's doctors hope she is in remission, but are uncertain and do not know if she will be with us for more than a year. Her friend requests that you please pray for continued healing and full remission for Lise; and, and please pray that God might give wisdom and guidance to all of her medical providers. Lise appreciates your support and prayers.
Jan has just recovered from her fifth cancer surgery. The medical prognosis is good. Her friend asks you pray for Jan's continued healing and complete remission; and, please pray God might give wisdom and guidance to all of her medical providers.
Vince (12 yrs) has bone cancer (a teammate of Andrew B). Please pray for his healing and non-recurrence of the cancer, as well as that he and his family might put their trust in God and accept His comfort and encouragement in this difficult time.
Lauralee underwent a lumpectomy on Friday after Thanksgiving and into targeted radiation therapy for 10 days. Please pray for a complete remission of the cancer. Pray also Lauralee will maintain her great attitude and trust in God.
Tim, brother of Lauralee, had a stroke and extremely high blood pressure and is now recovering. Pray for a full recovery.
Mary Parker is home. Please give thanks for her great recovery and continued progress.
Evelyn Hunt has asked for prayers of dealing with the residual pain and other problems from her leg. She appreciates the phone calls. Most importantly, pray for her to keep a good attitude and maintain a trust in God, so she will not worry.
Miney Farrell is thankful for her recovery from pneumonia. She is enjoying having her son and daughter in law back from a month trip around the Pacific.
Lorraine Winkles is still dealing with shingles (now over 34 months). The level of discomfort varies but the condition is persisting. She is in amazing spirits and sends her love to all.
Kay Denton (Mrs. Kay) is still home and doing pretty well considering the bones in her neck and hands are degenerating as a side effect of her kidney failure. Mrs. Kay asks that everyone who is praying for her know how grateful she is for their prayers. As always, she retains her trust in the Lord and her positive attitude. Nicole Ethridge - age 28, mother of two - has a form of liver disease FSCS, which was causing her liver to shut down. The disease has apparently gone into semi-remission. She is doing very well and coming off medications. Please pray for her continued remission and her continued faith and good spirits, as well as strength to take care of her children.
Caroline (age 11, leukemia recurrence) is doing very well following her bone marrow transplant 17 July 2008. Please keep praying as Caroline has a 40% chance of recurrence of her leukemia.
Natalie (age 10, leukemia recurrence) is 24 months into and has relapsed. One month short of the year anniversary since transplant, she relapsed. Her chances of survival are slim, yet they are only chances and have naught to do with her. Please pray for her and her family.

Keith has been unable to find any full-time work since his custom home drafting business of 25 years really dropped off last year. He is working as a handyman, doing tile work, painting, home repairs, etc. Their family has a great deal of debt from Susanne’s medical needs. Pray also for God's peace to comfort them and for His leading and wisdom to be very evident to them.
Mark’s business is very very slow, he asks that God point him to new markets and give him guidance in following God’s will that his business might survive and his employees not lose their livelihood.
Please give thanks for Kevin in the UK who has found a job. Please continue to pray he will find a position that will maintain his family and where he can use his talents to make a positive impact on the world. Please pray also for his family, in particular his wife Beverley, that they might open their hearts and minds to God’s guidance.

Shawna’s father lost his job in March 2009. After 33 years of working, he has been unable to find work. Please pray that he will find a job that will allow him to use his talents to make his new employer more successful. Pray also that he might put his trust in the Lord and look outward; that he might turn his heart away from depression and towards God. Pray also for his family in this very stressful time. Shawna ask that we pray for all those out of work that they might find gainful employment. There is little worse for a person than no work to turn to and no way to support their family.

Linda’s leg infection, the result of an open cut sustained in a fall, has healed nicely. Please give thanks for the healing.
Tieko received a kidney transplant and appears to be doing well. Please give thanks for the successful surgery and pray there will be no rejection.
Persecuted
Around the world, Christians are under attack, not only in the Muslim world, but from Hindus and others in India. Also, they are under continual attack in the western world as it becomes actively atheist or pro-devil buddy. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.
Free Teen Guitar Class
Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

Free Teen Guitar Class (FTGC – www.freeteenguitarclass.com)
The FTGC is now meeting Wednesdays at SCAIR Center in Alpine, the facility courtesy of Wanda Michaelis and Lona Walsh. The previous Class Schedule remains in effect:

Advanced 2:30-3:20pm
Continuing 3:20-4:00pm (Beginners shift to Intermediate having learned all 6 strings and get to move on to chords)
Beginning 4:00-4:50pm (A new class & those redoing the material; it’s okay to do both Intermediate & Beginner classes)

Nashotah House Trip or The Trek
The Episcopal Church (TEC) has what is referred to as a “Conservative” Seminary at Nashotah, Wisconsin. Greg Chase is attending a one week class there working towards his diaconate. He and Jack Arnold are driving to and from the class. If their trip interests you, you can read about it real time here:

The guys started out Tuesday morning 21 July 2009, at 0830. They made it to the EAO, (Eastern Area of Operations) and set up their TOC (Tactical Operations Center) at the Oconomoc Hilton Garden Inn. Their trip is being tracked real time by an automated GPS system. Jack is posting updates throughout the day and putting up photographs at night. There is a link to both the tracking page and the photo page on the web address above. This is quite an adventure for the pair. Join them on the road!
A little clarification, we are Anglicans. We are not TEC. TEC is pretty clearly not a Christian church. Greg is taking classes at their seminary and will apparently participate in their “religious” services. Because of the connection with TEC, Jack will not be participating in any “religious” services there. Greg and Jack are doing Morning and Evening Prayer (A Shorter Form) each day.
Today Jack and Greg attended the early service at Holy Apostles Church of the Anglican Church in America in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.

Officiating at the service was their rector, Charles F. Slagle. Father Slagle’s service was straight 1928 BCP. Jack really enjoyed it. Father Slagle was kind enough to show Greg and Jack around the church, even showing them his mentor’s WWII altar and communion set. Jack is ready to move to Wisconsin!
Your Beadle called Father Slagle after the service to thank him for his kind hospitality and was most impressed by Father Slagle. In the event you are in the area, please stop in. The church is beautiful and the people far more so.
After church, Greg and Jack drove around Nashotah House. As you can see, so Greg could get a look around.
