Sixth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Sixth Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was 78°F under bright blue skies. By the time church ended, we were at 102°F. With 25 people braving the heat, we had the highest attendance in some time!

Gathering Songs
Today Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.

• The King of Love
• Just a closer walk with thee
• How great is our God

We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!

The gathering songs worked the best in some time. When they started playing we numbered 11, by the time the service started, we had 25.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today continued the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am.

As is customary, the class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92

We are nearing the end of the New Testament. Only the Book of Revelations of Saint John the Divine remains. Today we finished with the three letters of John and one of Jude.

The First Epistle of John is the fourth catholic, universal or "general" epistle. Written in Ephesus around 100-110 AD, the epistle was written by John the Evangelist, also the author of the Gospel of John and the other two epistles of John. Not actually an epistle (or letter), the work is a sermon written to counter heresies that Jesus did not come "in the flesh," but only as a spirit. It also defines how Christians are to discern true teachers: by their ethics, their proclamation of Jesus in the flesh, and by their love. It calls upon Christians to walk the walk, not walk with talk.

The Second Epistle of John is the shortest book of the Bible, only thirteen verses. The text is addressed to “the elect lady and her children, ” and closes with the words, “The children of thy elect sister greet thee. ” It is thought to be addressed to a church (the lady) and it congregation (her children). Another interpretation point out that in the twelfth chapter of the Book of Revelation, John speaks of a woman and a dragon. The dragon plots maliciously against the woman and one of her children, but is frustrated in his attempts to do them harm. In anger he then pursues the rest of her children. Verse four of 2nd John reads, “I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth. ” It may be the woman of portent from Revelation to which this epistle is addressed.

There is a clear warning against paying heed to those who say Jesus was not a flesh-and-blood figure: “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. ” From the time the epistle was first written, there heresies; those who would the human person of Jesus was merely an illusion and he was actually pure spirit.

The Third Epistle of John is the second-shortest book of the Christian Bible by number of verses and shortest in regard to number of words (according to the Authorized Version) . John refers to himself as "the presbyteros". The letter is addressed to Gaius, likely the Christian Caius in Macedonia (Acts 19:29), the Caius in Corinth (Romans 16:23) or the Caius in Derbe (Acts 20:4). [1] Indications within the letter suggest a genuine private letter, written to commend to Gaius a party of Christians led by Demetrius, who were strangers to the place where he lived, and who had gone on a mission to preach the gospel (verse 7). The purpose of the letter is to encourage and strengthen Caius, and to warn him against the party headed by Diotrephes, who refuses to cooperate with the presbyteros who is writing.

The Epistle of Jude is the penultimate book in the New Testament. The epistle is written by Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James. If taken literally this means that the author claims to be a brother of Jesus, an attribution considered as the most probable. This is a brief book of only a single chapter with 25 verses. It was composed as an encyclical letter—that is, one not directed to the members of one church in particular, but intended rather to be circulated and read in all churches. The epistle is addressed to Christians in general, and it warns them about the doctrine of certain errant teachers to which they were exposed. Examples of heterodox opinions include Docetism, Marcionism, and Gnosticism. The epistle's style is combative, impassioned, and rushed. Many examples of evildoers and warnings about their fates are given in rapid succession. The epithets contained in this writing are considered to be some of the strongest found in the New Testament. The epistle concludes with a doxology, which is considered to be one of the highest in quality contained in the Bible.

Next week – The Revelation of Saint John the Divine!

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle, normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament, and the Gospel, a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the priest as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained priest.

The Collect for the Sixth Sunday after Trinity follows:

The Sixth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O GOD, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dru Arnold read the Epistle, which came from the Paul’s letter to the Romans, beginning at the First Verse of the Sixth Chapter. Paul tells us that as we were baptized unto Jesus in life, so we are baptized unto his death. We share His death on the Cross for our sins and by His death, our sin is dead; then as He was raised up, so are we. It is intended the death we die unto sin is to be permanent and that we go forth and sin no more. Yet, as long as we live here on earth, we sin. Yet, as long as we live in Christ, we live. Thus, we reckon ourselves “to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”:

KNOW ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the Twentieth Verse. Jesus tells his disciples, “Except your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Very worrisome indeed! Scribes and Pharisees spent their entire lives acting righteousness. There is no way mere mortals could exceed their righteousness. Jesus goes on to tell us that not only would we not go to heaven if we commit murder, but we are in danger of the same judgment of we are angry without just cause. If that were not worrisome enough, we are in danger of hell-fire if we call one another a fool! The text following asks us to do our best to follow Jesus and in return, his sacrifice will serve to set aside the just judgment.

JESUS said unto his disciples, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell-fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Sermon – Heart – the H in SHAPE
We will come back to this, but SHAPE is the word of the next few weeks. Actually, not really a word, but an acronym :

Spiritual Gifts
Heart
Abilities
Personality
Experience

The word of the week is Heart. To each of us is given by God a passion for something. Something(s) that, if pursued, in which we can excel. Things like:

Design/Develop—start from scratch
Pioneer—test and try something new
Organize—bring order to chaos
Maintain—efficient operation
Serve/Help—assist others
Acquire—shop, collect, bargain hunt
Excel—setting and striving for the highest
Influence—shape people’s attitudes & behaviors
Perform—be on stage
Improve—make things better
Repair—fix what’s broken
Lead—lead the way
Persevere—see it through to the end
Follow the rules—policies and procedure make it run
Prevail—fight injustice and wrong

Likewise, we have groups with whom we are a better fit than others:
•Age Group
–Infants, Babies, Toddlers, Preschool, Elementary, Middle, High School, College, Career
•Social Group
–Young married, Women, Men, Singles, Families, 50 and better, Elder

We have areas we find more interesting:
Parenting, Marriage, Family, At-Risk, Abuse/Violence, Divorce recovery, Disabilities, Evangelism, World Missions, Mobilizing for Ministry, Race, Ethnic, Business, Relief, Health, Fitness, Technology, Environment, Global, Issues, Community

So now with all that, what now? Listen to your heart. God brought you in to this world that you might make a difference. A positive difference. You need to figure out at what.

You need to be useful and make a difference, “…not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart…”
Ephesians 6.6

What are you doing to change the world? Not the whole world, you cannot do that. What are you doing to change the world around you. That you can do!

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

So please continue to pray for healing. The doctors don’t have a clue other than things pointing to the suspected infection and anemia, but they haven’t figured out what is going on—pray for guidance for her doctors. Free Teen Guitar Class
Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. Friday Night Christian Blues Jam Session at Starbucks - Albertsons
Father Ironhand called a jam session for 1900 (7:00pm) at the Starbuck and Albertsons parking lot in Alpine. Jack Arnold was the only one who was available, or so we thought until Bud showed up with a case of mouth harps (harmonicas). The three played for a couple of hours, alternating between Christian hymns and rock, blues and even a bit of heavy rock! There were a number of people who stopped by and even more who were rocking as they walked by! The guys got their first taste of professional music life when a passerby dropped six dollars as a donation! It was a really fun experience, next time they do one, not only resolve to come, but actually come and bring a chair (the curb got pretty low and pretty hard after a couple hours).

Nashotah House Trip or The Trek
The Episcopal Church (TEC) has what is referred to as a “Conservative” Seminary at Nashotah, Wisconsin. Greg Chase is attending a one week class there working towards his diaconate. He and Jack Arnold are driving to and from the class. If their trip interests you, you can read about it real time here:

http://jackandgregtriptonashotah2009.blogspot.com/

The guys start out Tuesday morning 21 July 2009, at 0830. Their trip will be tracked real time by an automated GPS system. Jack will be posting updates throughout the day and putting up photographs at night. There is a link to both the tracking page and the photo page on the web address above. This is going to be quite an adventure for the pair. Join them on the road!

A little clarification, we are Anglicans. We are not TEC. TEC is pretty clearly not a Christian church. Greg is taking classes at their seminary and will apparently participate in their “religious” services. Because of the connection with TEC, Jack will not be participating in any “religious” services there. Greg and Jack will be doing Morning and Evening Prayer (A Shorter Form) each day.

Epistle Readers
We post the list of Epistle Readers in the Beadle’s Report each week so you can either plan your attendance or your pre-reading as the spirit so moves you.

The near future, as well as Next Sunday

Next Saturday

Next Saturday is the Pine Valley Parade. Show time is 0800 at the Arnolds. If you want to join us at the parade, come in Old Highway 80 and tell the Highway Patrol you are in the parade, Unit One, Group Nine. After the parade, there will be a ceremonial killing (and cooking) of the fatted hamburger at the Arnolds. We had a great time after the last two parades, this ought to be even more fun. If you just like hamburgers and don’t like parades, we should be back by about 1015. For directions, contact Dru at dru@DescansoRodents.com or (619) 659-3608.
