Today was the Feast of Saint Luke which superseded the Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was 52°F under bright blue and clear skies. There was a marine layer about to Dunbar Lane. By the time the service ended at 0930, skies were beautifully blue and the mercury had inched up to slightly warmish 84°F. With a number of people on travel and sick, we ended up with 20 people at the service.
Gathering Songs
Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played today’s gathering songs:
• When the saints go marching in
• I’ll fly away
• God is my salvation
• Shine Jesus shine
Gathering songs are a great way not only to allow people to come in a bit late and not to worry, but also to allow us to mix contemporary music and conventional church music in the same service without interfering with each other. Plus, most importantly, our guitarists love to play. Plus, like today, somehow they often draw in people. We started with 13 people and by the time the songs were over we had 20!
Pre-Service Class
The 10 minute pre-service class is back. Each Sunday, Father Acker talks for about 10 minutes in a teaching session on some aspect of Christianity and the Church. Last year, it was the Bible in 10 minutes a week. After finishing the Bible, without the Apocrypha I might add, we have moved on to other interesting topics.
Today Father Acker talked about the basics of Christian faith and what we believe, the basic beliefs of all Christians are laid out in the Apostles and Nicene Creeds. Our Articles of Religion, Article Eight says:
VIII. Of the Creeds.
The Nicene Creed, and that which is commonly called the Apostles’ Creed, ought thoroughly to be received and believed: for they may be proved by most certain warrants of Holy Scripture.
The acceptance of the two creeds grew out of a controversy as to the nature of God and the relationship between God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. The concept of the Trinity or Triune God has been revealed gradually to us. In Genesis we find both God and the Holy Ghost, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth...And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” In John, Chapter Eight, Jesus says, “Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
What we really know of the Trinity is limited. People have died for their version of the concept. What we truly know can be boiled down to this diagram:
What the details of the Trinity is not as important as what we are supposed to do about it, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” Matthew 28.19
Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle and the Gospel. While they are “lessons”, they are not the First Lesson and the Second Lesson, they are the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the priest as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained priest.
The propers are the same each year, except if a Red Letter Feast, that is one with propers in the prayerbook, falls on a Sunday, then those propers are to be read instead. Red Letter Feast, so called because in the Altar Prayerbooks the titles are in red, are special days. Mostly dedicated to early saints who were instrumental in the development of the church, others to special events. In any event, today, 18 October, is the Feast of Saint Luke. The propers for the Feast of Saint Luke are found on Page 253 of the Book of Common Prayer.
The Collect for the Feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist follows:
Saint Luke the Evangelist. [October 18.].
The Collect.
ALMIGHTY God, who didst inspire thy servant Saint Luke the Physician, to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of thy Son; Manifest in thy Church the like power and love, to the healing of our bodies and our souls; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Fran Dexter read the Epistle for today, which came from Saint Paul’s Second letter to Timothy beginning at the Fifth Verse of the Fourth Chapter. Written near the end of Paul’s life, at a time only Luke remained with him, it exhorts each of us to do the work to which Luke dedicated his life, spreading the Word of God, evangelizing, spreading and being of the Gospel.
WATCH thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: for Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.
Few people get mentioned by name in the Bible. For the famous, or rather infamous, Alexander the Coppersmith, it is not an honor. He was apparently an apostate thorn in Paul’s side. Now an infamous thorn. Any publicity is good publicity, unless of course you are Alexander the Weaselhead.
The Holy Gospel for today came from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, the Tenth Chapter beginning at the First Verse. It tells the story of Jesus first evangelism mission for his disciples. He sent them on their first journey into the world without Him to spread the Word of God.
THE Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire.
Sermon – recOvery
Father Acker is on the road to recOvery. As you might note from the title, we hit the Big O. This is not CVA 34, ORISKANY, that some of you might be familiar with.
To put your life in God’s hands means to Openly Confess, to ask His forgiveness.
• Realize we’re not in control
• Existance of God; He’s in control
• Choose to Commit; His care
• Openly Confess; Ask His Forgiveness
The key to finding God, to finding happiness, to finding love is to admit you are lost. “I once was lost, but now am found.”
We need to open our lives to God. We cannot hide from Him, all we can do is make it harder for us to find Him when we try. We need to realistically evaluate our position, admit we are lost and let Him find us. When we do not admit we are lost we open ourselves to both kinds of guilt:
Real Guilt
• We’ve done something
Perceived Guilt
• We haven’t done something
o It just feels like it
Real guilt is not that bad: you feel guilty, you figure out why, you correct the problem and move on with life.
Perceived guilt is very bad: you feel guilty, there is no reason, you cannot fix that which is not broken, so you normally break something you can fix. No good here.
Guilt is not good. It undermines your confidence, imposes shame at facing others, damages relationships, shuts out others and results in overcompensation. Most of all it keeps you stuck in the past.
Live exists only in the present. The past no longer exists; for us the future will never be; we exist only now. The present is where the finger of God touches the timeline of eternity.
As imperfect beings we often choose, consciously or unconsciously to cling to the familiar, to what we know, to what we understand, to what we want, to fears we feel comfortable with.
When we confess our sins, whether in the General Confession, a private confession or a “Sacramental Confession”, the rules are the same:
• Don’t Beg
• Don’t Bargain
• Don’s Second Guess
• Just admit you are imperfect, ask for forgiveness and help not to repeat
Then, go forth and sin no more (to the best of your ability, oh imperfect one)
Remember, church is a hospital for sinners, not a sanctuary for saints. We are all imperfect. We strive for perfection knowing we are imperfect. Yet, if you aim low, you will never hit your target.

After Church Hospitality
Alice Acker brought snacks today: low carb quiche and all carb chocolate cookies. Greg Chase contributed chocolate raisins for those who might be still short of carbs. The Deputy Beadle reported the cookies were great, the Beadle confirmed the quiche was wonderful and you cannot goof up chocolate raisins!
Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley was on coffee duty, the coffee was great, as expected. Father Acker got up early and made fresh and excellent low carb lemonade, great and gone.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.
The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!
Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.
I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.
