Eighteen Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was 39°F under a marine layer. The marine layer persisted until after church started. By the time the service ended at 0930, skies were beautifully blue and the mercury had inched up to 72°F. With a number of people on travel, we ended up with 17 people at the service.

Gathering Songs

Father Ironhand and Jack Arnold played today’s gathering songs:

Holy, Holy / Amazing Love

God is my salvation

Just a closer walk

Jesus loves me

Gathering songs are a great way not only to allow people to come in a bit late and not to worry, but also to allow us to mix contemporary music and conventional church music in the same service without interfering with each other. Plus, most importantly, our guitarists love to play. Plus, like today, somehow they often draw in people. We started with 11 people and by the time the songs were over we had 17!

Pre-Service Class

The 10 minute pre-service class is back. Each Sunday, Father Acker talks for about 10 minutes in a teaching session on some aspect of Christianity and the Church. Last year, it was the Bible in 10 minutes a week. After finishing the Bible, without the Apocrypha I might add, we have moved on to other interesting topics.

Today Father Acker talked about the basics of Christian faith:

History

Structure

Authority

History

At the time of Jesus’ life here on earth, Jews used the Old Testament, to them Torah, that portion of the Bible written before 400BC.

Old Testament

Book of Genesis

Book of Exodus

Book of Leviticus

Book of Numbers

Book of Deuteronomy

Book of Joshua

Book of Judges

Book of Ruth

1 Samuel

2 Samuel

1 Kings

2 Kings

1 Chronicles

2 Chronicles

Book of Ezra

Book of Nehemiah

Book of Esther

Book of Job

Book of Psalms

Book of Proverbs

Book of Ecclesiastes

Song of Solomon

Book of Isaiah

Book of Jeremiah

Book of Lamentations

Book of Ezekiel

Book of Daniel

Book of Hosea

Book of Joel

Book of Amos

Book of Obadiah

Book of Jonah

Book of Micah

Book of Nahum

Book of Habakkuk

Book of Zephaniah

Book of Haggai

Book of Zechariah

Book of Malachi

At the time of Jesus, the Jews used what we call the Old Testament and also the later writings we now refer to as the Apocrypha or Intertestamental portion. And as far as can be determined, at the time, they looked at the Apocrypha much as we do as laid out in Article Six of the Articles of Religion:

And the other Books (as Hierome saith) the Church doth read for example of life and instruction of manners; but yet doth it not apply them to establish any doctrine; such are these following:

The Apocrypha

3 Esdras Baruch with the Letter of Jeremiah

4 Esdras Song of Three Young Men w/ Prayer of Azariah

Tobit Story of Susanna

Judith Bel and the Dragon

The Rest of Esther Prayer of Manasseh

The Wisdom of Solomon 1 Maccabees

Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 2 Maccabees

As Christians we believe everything we need to know for our salvation and moral guidance is contained in the Bible, as it says in Article Six of the Articles of Religion:

Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. In the name of the Holy Scripture we do understand those canonical Books of the Old and New Testament, of whose authority was never any doubt in the Church.

New Testament

Gospel of Matthew First Epistle to Timothy

Gospel of Mark Second Epistle to Timothy

Gospel of Luke Epistle to Titus

Gospel of John Epistle to Philemon

Acts of the Apostles Epistle to the Hebrews

Epistle to the Romans Epistle of James

First Epistle to the Corinthians First Epistle of Peter

Second Epistle to the Corinthians Second Epistle of Peter

Epistle to the Galatians First Epistle of John

Epistle to the Ephesians Second Epistle of John

Epistle to the Philippians Third Epistle of John

Epistle to the Colossians Epistle of Jude

First Epistle to the Thessalonians Book of Revelation

Second Epistle to the Thessalonians

The New Testament is the written rendering of the oral history and tradition of Jesus time here on earth. Unlike today, when Jesus walked the earth, he was not followed by the Unit Historian, with a complete documentation section and archive train. There was no written documents which survive covering His time here on earth that were written at the time. Everyone was pretty busy following Him and doing His work.

Later, when things settled down, people put pen to paper or quill to scroll, so to speak, and the history began to be documented. Thus, except for the writing of Saint Paul’s letters, they are the written version of an oral history. Stories of Jesus’ teaching and travels as told by the eyewitnesses of the events.

Jesus’ birth 6-4 BC

Crucified 29 AD

Paul converted/Death of Stephen 35 AD

Paul starts church planting 44 AD

Council of Jerusalem 49 AD

Paul wrote of his activities contemporarily, with letters to:

Galatia 49 AD

Thessolonica (1 & 2 letters) 51 AD

Rome and Corinth (1) 54-55 AD

Corinth 55-56 AD

Ephesus, Colossae, and to Philemon 60 AD

Philippi 61 AD

The Gospels were written later:

Matthew & Mark 70-80 AD

Luke & Acts ~ 80 AD

John ~95AD

Also John’s Revelation ~95 AD

There was universal acceptance of the New Testament Books, except the following:

Hebrews

James

2 John

3 John

2 Peter

Revelation

Each of these were accepted in one portion of the church or another, they just did not gain universal usage until the church councils which resulted in an acceptance of the books and an ordering of them into a single manuscript.

It seems likely next week we will be hearing about Church Authority. We will see.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle and the Gospel. While they are “lessons”, they are not the First Lesson and the Second Lesson, they are the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the priest as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained priest.

The Collect for the Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity follows:

The Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

LORD, we beseech thee, grant thy people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil; and with pure hearts and minds to follow thee, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ben Lizak read the Epistle for today, which came from Saint Paul first letter to the Corinthians beginning at the Fourth Verse of the First Chapter. Paul tells the people of Corinth he thanks God they have been the beneficiaries of His grace, that though Jesus they might have salvation, that through Jesus their sins would in the end be forgiven. He also pointed out that if they would follow Christ in both their words and deeds, as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in them, through their actions, they would be “In every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge…” For by acting on Christ’s words, we not only gain entry in to heaven, but are far more likely to prosper here on earth. This prosperity is not the mega wealth sometimes associated with “prospering”, but rather the surplus of resources over our worldly desires and the true happiness that comes from loving and helping others.

I THANK my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; that in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: so that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Today’s Gospel came from the Twenty-Second Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at the Thirty-Fourth Verse. Pharisees who had heard how Jesus confounded the Sadducees, feeling they were superior to the Pharisees, came together to confound Him. An expert in the law, of which Pharisees were very fond, asked Him a question, trying to trick Him, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus answered, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Thus, He provided the Summary of the Law we hear every Sunday.

Apparently tiring of the game with the Pharisees and wishing to confound them instead, Jesus asked them, saying, “What think ye of Christ? whose son is He?” They say unto him, “The son of David.” For the scripture is clear that he should be of the House of David. As God, Jesus has been from the beginning, so he queried them, “How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?” Not grasping the concept that God was, is and always will be, they could not answer and “from that day forth” no one would “ask him any more questions.”

WHEN the Pharisees had heard that Jesus had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Sermon – reCovery

Father Acker is on the road to reCovery. As you might note from the title, we hit the Big C.

For you to succeed, you need to Choose to Commit yourself to Christ. Three Cs, no waiting!

As imperfect beings we often choose, consciously or unconsciously to cling to the familiar, to what we know, to what we understand, to what we want, to fears we feel comfortable with.

As the Beadle recently said, “Fear of the future is in all of us. It is a bad thing. We live only today. Tomorrow never comes, yet we dread it.” We are often in dread of tomorrow, yet what does Christ tell us? “Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

What do we often do? Ignore Him. Why, because we cannot commit ourselves to His guidance. Here we have a perfect being willing to give us guidance and who do we follow? Hint – Not Him.

When will we follow?

When we get a round TUIT?

In the mean time, we get stuck. Stuck in:

Habits

Thoughts

Relationships

Grief

Work or School

Fear

Doubt

Then, as yourself honestly, are you stuck or hiding? Often we get stuck because we have pride, ego – EGO – Edging God Out.

Often we fail to acknowledge we are lost or astray. When we do end up finding we are headed in the wrong way, what is our normal reaction? Seems like there are two choices:

Slow down, turn around and get back up to speed in the right direction

or

Accelerate!

Care to hazard a guess as to which choice most of us seem to pick?

Jesus wants to help us. He will help us. We must accept His help and do our best to do what He asks. We will fall short. Falling short is nothing to worry about, but when you fall short, figure out what happened and try to do it better next time. Life is a state of change, make yours one of continuous improvement.

God put you here on earth to make a difference. Make it a positive one.

New Nametags

We had no new nametags today.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

We had no anniversaries today. Birthdays, on the other hand! Today we celebrated Ashley Welter’s 21st birthday and Greg Chase’s 61st birthday. What a difference 40 years makes.

After Church Hospitality

Today’s goodies were courtesy of Diane Chase. Diane brought a lovely birthday cake much enjoyed by all to celebrate Ashley and Greg’s birthdays. For those who needed a lower carb snack, there were four kinds of cheeses, without crackers, and a wonderful veggie platter. The cake was excellent, the veggies and cheeses great and low carb.

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley was on coffee duty, the coffee was great, as expected. Father Acker got up early and made fresh and excellent low carb lemonade, great and gone.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?

Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Free Teen Guitar Class

Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

Question that only you can ask

What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something

If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.
