Pine Valley Parade • Seventh Sunday after Trinity

Pine Valley Parade
Our parish participates in three parades each summer; Crown Hills / Alpine on the actual Fourth of July, then Descanso the next Saturday, we skip a Saturday, then Pine Valley. The Crown Hills parade is through a housing area, upper scale for the area, with many houses with artificial turf. You know the kind of place. Everyone is friendly and drives a Lexus. Then we go to Descanso. A bit different. The parade is smaller, it has different elements, sometimes riding lawnmowers and wheel barrows. Some years the participants outnumber the spectators. It is a small town. Then, there is the Pine Valley Parade. It would be small but for Corinne Lewis. When she is not being the secretary at school we meet at each Sunday, she is out tracking down parade entries. The Pine Valley Parade is the biggest parade in San Diego County each year. All due to Corinne! Each year we say, only two parades, each year we can’t let Corinne down. It is just the way it is. Then, we have a great time, see much and think, “Wow, best parade ever!”

Some times you see more people than you think, other times less.

We started out with three vehicles and picked up two more as we went along, we ended up with a parade entry of five green trucks. Kurt and his friends and family had seen us at a couple previous parades. Numbers count. You should have heard the comments about the Army of God as we passed the announcer’s booth!

After the parade, we went back to the Arnold Wheeled Vehicle Museum and had lunch, or breakfast depending on your perspective. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken legs. Potato salad, beans, coleslaw. Excellent eating!

All in all, it was a great day. If you were there, you know. If you were not, you don’t. But, we had a great time. Join us next time.

Seventh Sunday after Trinity
Today was the Seventh Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a lovely 63°F under bright blue skies. By the time church ended, we were at 88°F. With several people on travel, we still ended up with 18 people, not bad for a summer.

Gathering Songs
Today Jack Arnold was on travel to Wisconsin with Greg Chase (see the travel information at the end of the newsletter), thus the entire guitar load fell on Father Ironhand and Nick Patton to play the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.

• Jesus loves me
• Abide with me
• I sing a song of the saints of God

We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!

The gathering songs worked pretty well todat. When they started playing we numbered 12, by the time the service started, we had 18, a fifty percent gain!

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today was the final chapter in the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am.

As is customary, the class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92

With the Old Testament long done, we finished the New Testament with The Revelation of Saint John the Divine!

The Book of Revelation, or Book of the Apocalypse, was written by Saint John while he living on the Greek island of Patmos in exile. In Revelation, he writes to the seven Christian churches in Asia to relate two apocalyptic visions he has had. John of Patmos is often referred to as John the Divine, or John the Theologian, and the message he received is considered divine. Apocalypse is a Greek word for revelation, or uncovering, and divine an old Anglican usage meaning theologian. He is also known as the Eagle of Patmos and John the Seer.

Although now known as the "Book of Revelation", the title found on some of the earliest manuscripts is "The Apocalypse of John" and the most common title found on later manuscripts is "The Apocalypse of the Theologian.” In English, apocalypse is often rendered as revelation, since the literal meaning of the Greek word is "the act of revealing or unveiling", i.e., "revelation". Some later manuscripts add Evangelist or Apostle to the title. The book itself effectively includes a title in its opening words: "The Revelation of Jesus Christ".

After a short introduction (ch. 1:1–10), the book presents a brief account of the author. The first vision (1:11–3:22), related by "one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle", speaking with "a great voice, as of a trumpet", is a statement addressing the seven churches of Asia. The second vision, which makes up the rest of the book (chs. 4–22), begins with "a door … opened in the sky" and describes what some might call the end of the world— or more properly, the end of the age, in which Satan's rule through Man is destroyed by the Messiah. These events are foreseen: the Great Tribulation, the Campaign of Armageddon, the Second Coming of the Messiah with the restoration of peace to the world and His 1,000 year reign, the imprisonment of Satan (portrayed as a dragon) until he is 'loosed' for the final rebellion, God's final judgment over Satan, the Great White throne judgment, and the ushering in of the New Heavens and New Earth.

Revelation is considered by some to be one of the most controversial and difficult books of the Bible, with many diverse interpretations of the meanings of the various names and events in the account. Protestant founder Martin Luther at first considered Revelation to be "neither apostolic nor prophetic" and stated that "Christ is neither taught nor known in it", and placed it in his Antilegomena. John Calvin believed the book to be canonical, yet it was the only New Testament book on which he did not write a commentary. In the 4th century, Gregory of Nazianzus and other bishops argued against including this book in the New Testament canon, chiefly because of the difficulties of interpreting it and the danger for abuse. Christians in Syria also reject it because of the Montanists' heavy reliance on it. In the 9th century, it was included with the Apocalypse of Peter among "disputed" books in the Stichometry of St. Nicephorus, Patriarch of Constantinople. In the end it was included in the accepted canon, although it remains the only book of the New Testament that is not read within the Divine Liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Artists throughout the centuries have portrayed the visions described by John. An interesting similarity between the description of the "Ancient of Days" of Daniel chapter 7 and of "the Son of Man" of Revelation 1:13-16 occurs. "I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head was like the pure wool..." (Daniel 7:9 KJV) "And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;" (Revelation 1:13-14 KJV).

The book ties together many parts of the Old Testament and brings them together to a single point, in the end, GOD WINS.

Next week – The New Testament in Ten Minutes! Or, maybe something else.

Propers
Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle, normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament, and the Gospel, a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the priest as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained priest.

The Collect for the Seventh Sunday after Trinity follows:

The Seventh Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O LORD of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jan Macauley read the Epistle, which was written in the Sixth Chapter of Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans beginning at the Nineteenth Verse. Paul reminds us that when we strive above all else for the things of this world, we gain nothing we can take with us to the next. “For, when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.” Conversely, if we will be servants of God (righteousness) we can be free from the devil sin). “… the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. If we will follow God, we will live, not only forever in the next world, but better in this world.

I SPEAK after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today’s Gospel was written in the Eighth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Mark beginning at the First Verse. Jesus had been in the wilderness teaching a multitude, some four thousand in number. In those pre-restaurant on every corner days, the people had been without food and were hungry. Jesus was concerned and inventoried their supplies, seven loaves and a few small fishes. He gave thanks to God, and commanded the food to be set out before the people. When they had eaten their fill, the scraps gathered up from the seven loaves filled seven baskets.

IN those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: and if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

Sermon – Abilities – the A in SHAPE
We will come back to this, but SHAPE is the word of the next few weeks. Actually, not really a word, but an acronym :

Spiritual Gifts
H
eart
Abilities
Personality
Experience

The word of the week is Abilities. God has given us each abilities to be used for His purpose. We each have at least one, no matter how clumsy in one area or the other, we each have at least one ability we can use to further His Work. When you think of abilities, be specific, be honest. We all know Hap is not a great singer, but he does have the ability to make the rest of us sing louder (to drown him out of course). That is a good example. We all have a purpose in life, even if it is only to serve as a bad example.

Yet there is more than that, think of the abilities in the field of Art:

Banners, Calligraphy, Ceramics, Cartooning, Dancing, Flower Arranging, Humor, Jewelry, Knitting/Crocheting, Painting (water, oil), Photography, Quilting, Scrap booking, Sewing, Sketching, Woodcarving, Sculpting, the list goes on and on.

Specifics, not generalities. You need to take your specific talents or abilities and put them to real use for God’s glory. There is a way, you need to find it. God will show you the way, if you will listen to Him. If He could get the stiff-necked Jews to build a Ark, He can guide you:

The “skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of crafts to make artistic designs…to engage all kinds of craftsmanship.”
Exodus 31'

After Church Hospitality
Jan Macauley brought snacks today, DEVILED EGGS and some other stuff.

There is no disrespect intended, but speaking of abilities, Jan has the specific ability to make the world’s best deviled eggs. Most of all, she uses that ability.

There were also a plethora of other snacks, two kinds of cookies (Warren found the white icing ones made excellent communion wafer subsitutes), baby quiches, cherry tomatoes, red flame seedless grapes and did I mention deviled eggs?

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley had the duty today, coffee was great! Father Acker made his low carb lemonade. The lemonade was great and due to the temperature, it was gone!

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Bashir Ahmed, father of Shamim Gray, father in law of Commander Obra Gray for whom we prayed while he was deployed to Iraq and on various carrier deployments, is gravely ill. Bashir lives in London. He has been in the hospital for some time, it seems there is little they can do for him. Bashir had a major stroke the night of 15 July 2009. He is still in ICU. Shamim sorted out a private nursing agency to sit with Bashir three nights out of the week, since her mum is so tired, and refuses to leave him alone despite there being nurses in the ward area. That way Mum gets to sleep at home every other night. Please pray that the medical staff will do their best for him. Please pray God will deliver a miraculous recovery for Bashir; if that not be God’s will, a departure in peace to His world for him. Please pray also Mum will be able to get some rest so she does not deteriorate herself. Shamim keeps her faith in the Lord. Above all, please pray also for his family to open their hearts to accept all God’s love will bring them.

The doctors don’t have a clue other than things pointing to the suspected infection and anemia, but they haven’t figured out what is going on—pray for guidance for her doctors. Maureen is being closely monitored in the hospital and continues to feel better. Her hemoglobin is getting close to normal (good news on the anemia front).

Sonny Discar is in Grossmont Hospital with H1H1 virus - Swine flu, which he apparently contacted in France. In addition, he has staph infection. This will likely lengthen his ICU stay and can delay breathing on his own again. Sonny’s family asks that we pray the staph infection be eradicated within Sonny’s body; that those who are frightened of the Swine Flu be at peace; that Sonny’s body fight this disease effectively; that the doctors identify each situation and choose the best treatment method; for his family to walk in peace and strength; for Sonny to begin breathing on his own again; for his wife Melinda and his children and family to trust the Lord and bring encouragement to each other.

Nicole Ethridge - age 28, mother of two - has a form of liver disease FSCS, which was causing her liver to shut down. The disease has apparently gone into semi-remission. Free Teen Guitar Class
Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.

Nashotah House Trip or The Trek
The Episcopal Church (TEC) has what is referred to as a “Conservative” Seminary at Nashotah, Wisconsin. Greg Chase is attending a one week class there working towards his diaconate. He and Jack Arnold are driving to and from the class. If their trip interests you, you can read about it real time here:

http://jackandgregtriptonashotah2009.blogspot.com/

The guys started out Tuesday morning 21 July 2009, at 0830. They made it to the EAO, (Eastern Area of Operations) and set up their TOC (Tactical Operations Center) at the Oconomoc Hilton Garden Inn. Their trip is being tracked real time by an automated GPS system. Jack is posting updates throughout the day and putting up photographs at night. There is a link to both the tracking page and the photo page on the web address above. This is quite an adventure for the pair. Join them on the road!

A little clarification, we are Anglicans. We are not TEC. TEC is pretty clearly not a Christian church. Greg is taking classes at their seminary and will apparently participate in their “religious” services. Because of the connection with TEC, Jack will not be participating in any “religious” services there. Greg and Jack are doing Morning and Evening Prayer (A Shorter Form) each day.

Today Jack and Greg attended the early service at Holy Apostles Church of the Anglican Church in America in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.

http://www.gotoholyapostles.org/

Officiating at the service was their rector, Charles F. Slagle. Father Slagle’s service was straight 1928 BCP. Jack really enjoyed it. Father Slagle was kind enough to show Greg and Jack around the church, even showing them his mentor’s WWII altar and communion set. Jack is ready to move to Wisconsin!

Your Beadle called Father Slagle after the service to thank him for his kind hospitality and was most impressed by Father Slagle. In the event you are in the area, please stop in. The church is beautiful and the people far more so.

After church, Greg and Jack drove around Nashotah House. As you can see, so Greg could get a look around.

Sixth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Sixth Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was 78°F under bright blue skies. By the time church ended, we were at 102°F. With 25 people braving the heat, we had the highest attendance in some time!

Gathering Songs
Today Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.

• The King of Love
• Just a closer walk with thee
• How great is our God

We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!

The gathering songs worked the best in some time. When they started playing we numbered 11, by the time the service started, we had 25.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today continued the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am.

We are nearing the end of the New Testament. Only the Book of Revelations of Saint John the Divine remains. Today we finished with the three letters of John and one of Jude.

The First Epistle of John is the fourth catholic, universal or "general" epistle. Written in Ephesus around 100-110 AD, the epistle was written by John the Evangelist, also the author of the Gospel of John and the other two epistles of John. Not actually an epistle (or letter), the work is a sermon written to counter heresies that Jesus did not come "in the flesh," but only as a spirit. It also defines how Christians are to discern true teachers: by their ethics, their proclamation of Jesus in the flesh, and by their love. It calls upon Christians to walk the walk, not walk with talk.

The Second Epistle of John is the shortest book of the Bible, only thirteen verses. The text is addressed to “the elect lady and her children, ” and closes with the words, “The children of thy elect sister greet thee. ” It is thought to be addressed to a church (the lady) and it congregation (her children). Another interpretation point out that in the twelfth chapter of the Book of Revelation, John speaks of a woman and a dragon. The dragon plots maliciously against the woman and one of her children, but is frustrated in his attempts to do them harm. In anger he then pursues the rest of her children. Verse four of 2nd John reads, “I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth. ” It may be the woman of portent from Revelation to which this epistle is addressed.

There is a clear warning against paying heed to those who say Jesus was not a flesh-and-blood figure: “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. ” From the time the epistle was first written, there heresies; those who would the human person of Jesus was merely an illusion and he was actually pure spirit.

The Third Epistle of John is the second-shortest book of the Christian Bible by number of verses and shortest in regard to number of words (according to the Authorized Version) . John refers to himself as "the presbyteros". The letter is addressed to Gaius, likely the Christian Caius in Macedonia (Acts 19:29), the Caius in Corinth (Romans 16:23) or the Caius in Derbe (Acts 20:4). [1] Indications within the letter suggest a genuine private letter, written to commend to Gaius a party of Christians led by Demetrius, who were strangers to the place where he lived, and who had gone on a mission to preach the gospel (verse 7). The purpose of the letter is to encourage and strengthen Caius, and to warn him against the party headed by Diotrephes, who refuses to cooperate with the presbyteros who is writing.

The Epistle of Jude is the penultimate book in the New Testament. The epistle is written by Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James. If taken literally this means that the author claims to be a brother of Jesus, an attribution considered as the most probable. This is a brief book of only a single chapter with 25 verses. It was composed as an encyclical letter—that is, one not directed to the members of one church in particular, but intended rather to be circulated and read in all churches. The epistle is addressed to Christians in general, and it warns them about the doctrine of certain errant teachers to which they were exposed. Examples of heterodox opinions include Docetism, Marcionism, and Gnosticism. The epistle's style is combative, impassioned, and rushed. Many examples of evildoers and warnings about their fates are given in rapid succession. The epithets contained in this writing are considered to be some of the strongest found in the New Testament. The epistle concludes with a doxology, which is considered to be one of the highest in quality contained in the Bible.

Next week – The Revelation of Saint John the Divine!

The Collect for the Sixth Sunday after Trinity follows:

The Sixth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O GOD, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dru Arnold read the Epistle, which came from the Paul’s letter to the Romans, beginning at the First Verse of the Sixth Chapter. Paul tells us that as we were baptized unto Jesus in life, so we are baptized unto his death. We share His death on the Cross for our sins and by His death, our sin is dead; then as He was raised up, so are we. It is intended the death we die unto sin is to be permanent and that we go forth and sin no more. Yet, as long as we live here on earth, we sin. Yet, as long as we live in Christ, we live. Thus, we reckon ourselves “to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”:

KNOW ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today’s Holy Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the Twentieth Verse. Jesus tells his disciples, “Except your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Very worrisome indeed! Scribes and Pharisees spent their entire lives acting righteousness. There is no way mere mortals could exceed their righteousness. Jesus goes on to tell us that not only would we not go to heaven if we commit murder, but we are in danger of the same judgment of we are angry without just cause. If that were not worrisome enough, we are in danger of hell-fire if we call one another a fool! The text following asks us to do our best to follow Jesus and in return, his sacrifice will serve to set aside the just judgment.

JESUS said unto his disciples, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell-fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Sermon – Heart – the H in SHAPE
We will come back to this, but SHAPE is the word of the next few weeks. Actually, not really a word, but an acronym :

Spiritual Gifts
Heart
Abilities
Personality
Experience

The word of the week is Heart. To each of us is given by God a passion for something. Something(s) that, if pursued, in which we can excel. Things like:

Design/Develop—start from scratch
Pioneer—test and try something new
Organize—bring order to chaos
Maintain—efficient operation
Serve/Help—assist others
Acquire—shop, collect, bargain hunt
Excel—setting and striving for the highest
Influence—shape people’s attitudes & behaviors
Perform—be on stage
Improve—make things better
Repair—fix what’s broken
Lead—lead the way
Persevere—see it through to the end
Follow the rules—policies and procedure make it run
Prevail—fight injustice and wrong

Likewise, we have groups with whom we are a better fit than others:
•Age Group
–Infants, Babies, Toddlers, Preschool, Elementary, Middle, High School, College, Career
•Social Group
–Young married, Women, Men, Singles, Families, 50 and better, Elder

We have areas we find more interesting:
Parenting, Marriage, Family, At-Risk, Abuse/Violence, Divorce recovery, Disabilities, Evangelism, World Missions, Mobilizing for Ministry, Race, Ethnic, Business, Relief, Health, Fitness, Technology, Environment, Global, Issues, Community

So now with all that, what now? Listen to your heart. God brought you in to this world that you might make a difference. A positive difference. You need to figure out at what.

You need to be useful and make a difference, “…not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart…”
Ephesians 6.6

What are you doing to change the world? Not the whole world, you cannot do that. What are you doing to change the world around you. That you can do!

Travel
Jack and Greg are on travel this week.
Chris, Stephanie, Andrew and Alex are on travel this week.
Jesse leaves for a mission trip to Costa Rica on 23 July 2009.
Erika leaves for a mission trip to Panama on 25 July 2009.

So please continue to pray for healing. The doctors don’t have a clue other than things pointing to the suspected infection and anemia, but they haven’t figured out what is going on—pray for guidance for her doctors. Pray for them to reach out to those around them who would provide support with God’s help. Pray for the medical personnel taking care of Madelyn.

Friday Night Christian Blues Jam Session at Starbucks - Albertsons
Father Ironhand called a jam session for 1900 (7:00pm) at the Starbuck and Albertsons parking lot in Alpine. Jack Arnold was the only one who was available, or so we thought until Bud showed up with a case of mouth harps (harmonicas). The three played for a couple of hours, alternating between Christian hymns and rock, blues and even a bit of heavy rock! There were a number of people who stopped by and even more who were rocking as they walked by! The guys got their first taste of professional music life when a passerby dropped six dollars as a donation! It was a really fun experience, next time they do one, not only resolve to come, but actually come and bring a chair (the curb got pretty low and pretty hard after a couple hours).

The guys start out Tuesday morning 21 July 2009, at 0830. Their trip will be tracked real time by an automated GPS system. Jack will be posting updates throughout the day and putting up photographs at night. There is a link to both the tracking page and the photo page on the web address above. This is going to be quite an adventure for the pair.

Greg and Jack will be doing Morning and Evening Prayer (A Shorter Form) each day.

Epistle Readers
We post the list of Epistle Readers in the Beadle’s Report each week so you can either plan your attendance or your pre-reading as the spirit so moves you.

The near future, as well as Next Sunday

Next Saturday

Next Saturday is the Pine Valley Parade. Show time is 0800 at the Arnolds. If you want to join us at the parade, come in Old Highway 80 and tell the Highway Patrol you are in the parade, Unit One, Group Nine. After the parade, there will be a ceremonial killing (and cooking) of the fatted hamburger at the Arnolds. We had a great time after the last two parades, this ought to be even more fun. If you just like hamburgers and don’t like parades, we should be back by about 1015. For directions, contact Dru at dru@DescansoRodents.com or (619) 659-3608.

Next Sunday
Next Sunday is the Sixth Sunday after Trinity. Wonder if Father Acker will remember where we are in the Bible for the class?

Blessed Trinity Calendar

25 July 2009 Saturday 0800 Pine Valley Parade

See you next week on Sunday!

Descanso Parade • Fifth Sunday after Trinity • Senior Warden’s Brunch

Descanso Parade

Saturday 11 July 2009, we participated in the annual Descanso Parade. Attending were:

In the M601:

• Ben Lizak, Driver
• Greg Chase, Co-Driver
• Holly Lizak
• Alice Acker
• Tim Macauley
• Jan Macauley
• Traci Huber
• Warren Huber, Tootsie Roll tail gunner

In the GTB with the Free Teen Guitar

• Hap Arnold, Driver
• Dru Arnold, Co-Driver
• Father Ironhand, Free Teen Guitar Leader
• Ryan Howell, Free Teen Guitar Class
• Jack Arnold, Free Teen Guitar Class

The parade, which starts at 1000L, was again an unqualified success! The gathering area was different this year, as the normal area is under construction. They have been building a multi-million dollar bridge across a gulch that has never flooded. But, in the even Noah starts building his second ark, it could. So the multi-million dollar construction projected diverted the parade. There were less people than last year, but Fran and Walt Dexter were in their normal spot at the turn up Old Viejas Grade. Walt was cheering us on!

We got put with some other military vehicles, so we were leading a big convoy!

The guitar gear functioned perfectly this time. Father Acker, Ryan Howell and Jack Arnold sounded great. This time, it was mostly sing along music and the crowd really loved it. Lots of people, young and old, rocking and clapping to the music! Once we cleared the parade, they started jamming with some pretty wild stuff. All good, some really great!

After the parade, we parked the vehicles back at Rathaus and settled down for a Wiener Dog or two. The beer tapper got lighter, the wiener dog storage area got lighter. Dru Arnold made beer brauts, which Tim cooked to perfection. Ben and Holly brought cole slaw and Alice Acker brought potato salad. Jan made wonderful cookies. All was well. At least Warren thought so.

We had a great time. If you were there, you know. If you were not, come to the Pine Valley Parade with us in two weeks and stay for a braut! Or, two. Or, three.

Fifth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Fifth Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was 58°F under bright blue skies. By the time church ended, once again we were at 92°F. Even though there were a number of people on travel, we managed to end up with 17 people present for the service.

Gathering Songs
Today Father Ironhand and Jack Arnold played the usual gathering or welcome songs for the service.

• Abide with me
• Humbly I adore thee
• Hymn 243 – I sing a song of the saints of God

We do the gathering songs for a number of reasons. It allows people a chance to “drift in” without being late. It gives us a bit of variety in our music. We can have more contemporary music before the service and still have organ music in the service, thus having something for everyone. It also a hit with our guitarists who love to play!

The gathering songs worked better than last. When they started playing we numbered 8, by the time the service started, we had 17.

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today continued the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am.

We have made our way through the Bible to the two letters of Saint Peter. Like the letter of Saint James, these are general epistles, written to all, not just one church. They talk of encouragement in persecution and of the true knowledge of God. Peter was a fisherman, not a systematic theologian. He provided useful, practical instruction for a real world. Writing from the Babylon of Rome, he talks of the value of suffering and the testing the genuineness of one’s faith. He talks of the hope that exists not only in, but only in, Jesus.

If you have a hard time remembering do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week, remember Sunday is the first day of the week.

The Collect for the Fifth Sunday after Trinity follows:

The Fifth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.
GRANT, O Lord, we beseech thee, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hap Arnold read the Epistle, which came from the Third Chapter of the First Epistle of Saint Peter beginning at the Eighth Verse. Peter tells to be of one mind, have compassion and pity for each other, to be courteous, to give good to all our brethren, to return good for evil, to seek peace, to do good, not just talk good. Peter tells us to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. To put ourselves in others’ places, understand when they fall short and make good things happen.

BE ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts.

Today’s Gospel started in the Fifth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke beginning at the First Verse. This is one of the classic stories of Jesus in the Bible. Jesus had gone down to Lake Gennesaret to pray and then speak to the people. As they pressed in on him, he asked Simon Peter to use his boat as a speaking platform. Speaking from a small boat near the beach is almost like speaking in an amphitheatre. When he finished talking to the people, he told Simon Peter to go out and set his nets. Simon pointed out they had fished all night with no result, but at His word, he would set his net. The net gathered an incredible catch that Simon Peter and his friends could not board. At that point, it was clear to Simon Peter he was in the presence of one far greater than himself. He fell to his knees, saying, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Then Jesus said, “Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.” From then on Simon Peter followed Jesus.

Do not misunderstand, every day Jesus speaks to you telling you what to do. It is your choice, you can listen like Simon Peter, or you can ignore Jesus. He has the pony for the lottery. He wants to give it to you, all you have to do is accept. While He is a bit more subtle than a Drill Instructor, the question is the same, “Can you hear me?”

There are none so deaf as those who will not hear.

IT came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: never-theless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: and so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

Sermon – Spiritual Gifts – the S in SHAPE
We will come back to this, but SHAPE is the word of the next few weeks. Actually, not really a word, but an acronym :

Spiritual Gifts
Heart
Abilities
Personality
Experience

In his letter to the Romans, Paul talks of spiritual gifts:

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12.6-8

Prophecy Proclaim a revelation
Service Meeting needs of others
Teach Explaining God’s Word
Exhort/Encourage Other’s to feel God’s help
Giving With generosity & cheerfulness
Leading Point to and demonstrating the Way
Mercy Compassion for the suffering

In his first letter to the people of Corinth, Paul writes:

For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12.8-10

Wisdom Insight into God’s plan
Knowledge Relevant information
Faith Great confidence in God’s will
Healing God’s means of cure & health
Miracles God’s extraordinary acts
Discernment Sensing godly or ungodly origin
Tongues Communicating in Godly language
Interpretation Translating God’s language

To turn ourselves outwards, to bless others as God, through His Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ has taught us, we must know what God has given us and develop those gifts. Spiritual gifts are part of our SHAPE.

Travel
Chris, Stephanie, Andrew and Alex are on travel this week.
Don, Sandy and Nick are on travel this week.

Perhaps there he will be able to orient himself and he will feel like eating. Also, his wife will be able to get some rest so she does not deteriorate herself.

Senior Warden’s Brunch
There was no traditional after church hospitality time today because the second Sunday in July is the Senior Warden’s Brunch. Ben Lizak and his lovely wife Holly put on an after church brunch each year. If you have come to one in the past, you are unlikely to ever miss one again. If you have never been, you are really missing a great time.

It is sad there are so few pictures, particularly of the food. It was beautiful, as well as tasty! The problem was your Beadle was having such a good time, he forgot to take pictures until the very last.

This year Holly had her traditional sausage strata, both “protein style” and turbo carb’d, Chicken Salad (of, not for) Caesar Salad, sliced cucumbers, sliced tomatoes, beautiful fresh fruit and brownies. Not to mention a lifetime supply of takeaway plums. Jan Macauley could not be there, but she sent wonderful deviled eggs.

Ben was handing out fresh mimosas, as well as the usual soft drinks, iced teas, beers, water and the like. Father Acker brought his low carb lemonade.

Everyone who was at church made it to the brunch. Sometimes we are reluctant to go to after or before church events at others’ houses. Why? Sometimes we don’t want to be beholding to them, other times we don’t feel like “imposing”, other times we fear others will think us piggy, still other times we fear we will be poisoned by just plain lousy food.

While he cannot speak for any other congregation, let the Beadle set you straight about this one:

• We love to share, food tastes better shared;
• We welcome company;
• No one will expect you to “reciprocate”, I think all our Sundays are already taken, anyway!
• There is plenty of food;
• The worst cooks in this congregation are truly great. The “disasters” our cooks speak of would be monthly specials at most restaurants.
