Twenty-First Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Twenty-First Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a cooler 46°F under thin overcast skies. Down the hill at church it was a far different, far wetter picture. There was a deep broken marine layer, the temperature was about 55°F with the same thin overcast. Kind of pleasant. With quite a few of the parish on travel, we still ended up with 25 people to worship our Lord!

Gathering Songs

Today Nick Patton, Jack Arnold and Father Ironhand did a great job, playing:

Shine, Jesus shine

Abide with me

Lord I lift your name on high

Amazing Grace

Gathering songs are a great way not only to allow people to come in a bit late and not to worry, but also to allow us to mix contemporary music and conventional church music in the same service without interfering with each other. Plus, most importantly, our guitarists love to play. Plus, like today, somehow they often draw in people. We started with 11 people and by the time the songs were over we had 25!

Pre-Service Class

Father Acker’s leisurely stroll through the Book of Luke continued with Chapter 6, Verse 1.

1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;

4 How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?

5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

You must understand the Jews of the time were very much people of The Law, they had incredibly detailed rules by which to live, in which common sense or spirit of the law play little.

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle and the Gospel. While they are “lessons”, they are not the First Lesson and the Second Lesson, they are the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the minister as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained minister.

The Collect for the Twentieth Sunday after Trinity follows:

Twenty-First Sunday after Trinity

The Collect.

GRANT, we beseech thee, merciful Lord, to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may becleansed from all their sins, and serve thee with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Alice Acker read the Epistle for this morning which came from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, the Sixth Chapter, beginning at the Tenth Verse. In these passages, Paul gives his clearest definition of the spiritual war between the forces of Satan and those who would follow God. It not only assures us that there is a spiritual war, but it warns us that apart from utilizing the weapons which God has provided for us, we are hopelessly underpowered. This passage tells us what our divine weapons are. Beyond this, these weapons imply the nature of the struggle which we are in. The weapons which God has provided for us are those weapons which best repel the attacks of Satan, and thus we can learn a great deal about the nature of Satan’s opposition from simply considering each of the weapons at our disposal.

After a consideration of the war in general, we will then proceed to examine in more detail each of the weapons Paul mentions, and the offensive strategy of Satan which they imply. May God give us open hearts and minds to understand the spiritual war, and the means which He has provided for our defense.

MY brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

The Gospel was written in the Fourth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. John beginning at the Forty-Sixth Verse. This is a telling of the story of the healing of a Jewish nobleman's son Capernaum through the faith of his father. When the man came to him asking for help, he responded as he often did to Jews, “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.” The man persisted and because Jesus saw faith in him, he said, focusing his attention on faith in God, “Go thy way; thy son liveth” or "Be on your way. Your son is alive." In other words: "Do not worry. My Word can heal your son at a distance." The boy was healed in the very instant when Jesus spoke the Word. The father believed this Word. So did his household, wife, children and servants. More than one person was healed on that occasion.

This miracle shares characteristics with the previous healing of the Centurion’s son:

Jesus has just come back to Galilee.

Someone comes to him with a request.

Indirectly Jesus seems to refuse at first.

The person persists.

Jesus grants the request.

This leads another group of people (his disciples, the nobleman’s household) to believe in him.

Note the necessity of trusting in Jesus as the giver of life. Of the text, Luther wrote: "Although the Lord performed miracles and signs to make Himself known and to lead people to faith in Him, the underlying purpose was to focus their attention on the Word rather than on the signs which served merely to attest the truth of His testimony. Faith must rest on the Word of God." Another Lutheran theologian wrote: "In affliction faith is practiced and chastened. If a person does not see, taste and experience the help and grace of the Lord, then that person learns to trust the Word and nothing but the Word. That is the true faith, trusting the Lord for its own sake. Such faith comes not from flesh and blood. It's the Lord to which faith clings. That almighty Word works faith."

Jesus led this nobleman from a "miracle" faith to a true faith in His Word. He does this to us also.

"Be on your way. Your son lives." This Word of Jesus was not only a prophecy. It had the power to heal the sick boy. And this Word took the nobleman's worries away.

THERE was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house. This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judæa into Galilee.

Sermon - The Seven Destroyers - Envy

Father Acker is working his way through the Seven Deadly Sins, this Sunday was on envy and he provided the following summary so you can see what he was trying to get across:

Today's Message: Green with Envy?

What are things that tear at our soul, creating damage to us as people created by God for a life of love. If you’re like me not only do I have my favorite sins, but I tend to rank them. But to grow in my Christian life I need to look at all the things that Scripture tells me about getting my life in line with God’s plan for living with him forever.

One of the subtle destroyers for me is Envy. As you heard me tell last week I may quickly turn green in wrath as a Sci-Fi character, I don’t suddenly turn green with envy. But what I’ve noticed in looking at these destroyers, these challenges that St. Paul and Jesus and many others have talked about for centuries, is that like so many of Satan’s snares they are subtle and creep in; slowly inching it’s way into my life.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine was publishing his second book. And what I though was why haven’t I had something published. What I was thinking had nothing to do with if I had bothered to actually write something or had something worthwhile printing. What was there was the sense that I deserve it more.

It creeps in when you’re looking at that new vehicle on display at the Fair or in the Mall or riding in someone’s car, truck, bike, skateboard, computer, kitchen, Callaway FTiz Driver, Flying-V guitar, or whatever. It isn’t that you don’t want or enjoy that your friend or a stranger has whatever. It’s the “I deserve it.”

God made us so that we would enjoy the things of his creation; so you can enjoy that new car smell, the feel of that guitar neck, speed of that computer, balance of that kitchen knife, and those seductive look, touch, sound, smell, and feel. But envy can turn them and work its way into to start destroying your “peace of God that surpasses all understanding.” The life you have with Jesus gets pulled, forced off course in those small things.

Doesn’t it creeps in…I’ve been working so hard at xyz, I deserve a reward of this shining wonder. It’s the old sales pitch of the serpent, in the Garden of Eden. If you eat it, I’ll have all the special, insider knowledge of good and evil and be like God, (and me), smoothly says the shining one.

It isn’t just the comparison. It isn’t just being rewarded for hard work. It is the “I deserve… The “I have the right to… “I am entitled to… Where did Satan tempt Eve—don’t forget Adam was the dumb blond standing right next to Eve, and Satan knew who was really in charge of the Eden home. Satan was saying, You deserve to be a god, to have all the perks, and the special things.

The reality we need to know for our life with God is God, the Maker of heaven and earth, created us. And that means you and me. The old temptation is to forget that God created us. We aren’t self-made men and women. We are God created, Made by God.

When I got my HTC/ATT smart phone three years ago. I immediately wanted cool features that ATT didn’t put on the phone, so I reprogrammed the ROM. I wanted my phone to have what the other latest HTC phones had. Actually some smart software engineers did the programming, I just had to load it onto the flash memory. Some things worked well and others didn’t.

Those of you in the Apple computer world know that Apple never lets you forget that they are the ones in control. You may jailbreak your iPhone or iPad, but it won’t be long before you want something more for Steve Jobs and your jail-break, on-your-own gadget just no longer works for the new software feature.

Envy, where it goes beyond need to want and desire. I goes to a place of expectation, deserving, and the right. It’s having what someone else has. The job, boyfriend, girlfriend. It could be their money, lifestyle, family. It could be their stable family situation. Perhaps it is being popular, good looks. The sales pitch of Satan is to compare. His goal is to bring you to the conclusion that you have less and you deserve more.

The reality we need to know is that God loves you. God doesn’t love some people more than others. At the dentist’s office last week the assistant was saying how it was so amazing to her that she could love her second child as much as the first, that it wasn’t a diminishing of love, having a limited amount of love that it would have to be divided between the two. God loves you as much and as fully as he has ever loved anyone. That is where our peace of God resides—God loves you.

So our prayer this week, the Collect for the Day, (in your bulletin, in your service booklet): we asked for pardon and peace; to be cleansed from sin and to serve God with a quiet mind—to be in the peace of God. So how do we work with God this week to cooperate with God and living in his peace.

Paul tells us that our strength, the power and substance of this life, comes from God. “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” To combat Satan, this trap of envy, we need the armor of God and not self-created defenses.

Belt of Truth

Bulletproof vest of Righteousness

Combat boots of Readiness of the Gospel, ready to share the Good of God

Force Field of Faith

Helmet of Salvation

Weapon Power of the Spirit

God wants you to have every piece of equipment you need to live your life in God.

The peace of God isn’t something passive, a sitting on clouds with harp music in the background. It is living in the strength of God, the power and security of knowing God is God and that you are loved by God.

We need God’s forgiveness that when we start comparing, start envying, start believing that we expect, have the right, or deserve—that God owes us. When we turn away from our own strength and turn back to God’s strength, then the healing of God enters in. Then we will see and recognize as the Official in the fourth chapter of John…”The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, ‘Your son will live.’”

So will we again believe? This week we are called to find pardon and peace in God. Comparison is just one of the things that can destroy that peace of God. This week Jesus us asks us to join with him and “serve with a quiet mind.” To live, putting on the whole armor of God, knowing: “He himself believed, and all his household.” We are here today to help one another in putting on Truth, Righteousness, Readiness, Faith, Salvation, and the Word of God.

James 3.16-17 Better envy…confusion and every evil thing

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. James 3.16-17

Living in God’s love we can leave behind the disorder, the bio-hazards that eat into our peace found in our Lord. Envy breaks our trust in God. Envy tells the lie that “it isn’t fair.” But the truth sets you free. Free to enjoy those good things of God. Free to know and experience the reality that God loves you. In God you will not be in want. In God you will find the peace that long for and desire in your life. In God it will surpass our understanding.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?

Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Prayer List Notice – If you have someone on the prayer list and their needs have changed, please let us know. We are loathe to just stop praying, yet some of the entries are a bit long in the tooth. We don’t mind praying, at all. We just want to be praying for what is needed!

Vicky developed a brain aneurysm, which ruptured the morning of 28 October 2009. Vicky’s neighbor Sandy has been updating us periodically and sent this:

On 28 October 2009, Vicky she told her husband Doug she had a terrible headache. As it turned out she had a ruptured brain aneurysm. After four surgeries and several months in hospitals, nursing homes and a rehabilitation hospital she came home five weeks ago. Considering the fact she was only given a slight chance to pull through and the fear was she would be an invalid and might never understand anything or talk again her coming home was a small miracle. Doug prepared for the worst but never gave hope and he made daily trips to Denver to be with her and their boys also went often.

Please pray for Vicky’s recovery and for peace of mind for her family, that they might keep their trust in the Lord.

Obra Gray continues to take day by day, despite still mourning the loss of his beloved wife, Pauline. Please continue to keep Obra in your prayers, and give him the strength of knowing the Lord is with him and will never forsake him. Please God give Obra the peace in his heart he needs, and pray for him to believe the almighty Lord will hold onto him, and not let go until he is in the Lord's arms. Obra needs security of what lies ahead of him, and only the Lord can grant the solace to answer his prayer.

Paula, daughter of Obra Gray, has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) one month ago. The disease has impacted her far quicker than anyone can believe. Above all, pray for his entire family to open their hearts to accept all God’s love will bring them.

Miney Farrell has pain and weakness in her leg. She asks that you pray for strength to work hard on physical exertion required to regain her strength. She also thanks God for the wonderful people she lives with.

Lorraine Winkles is dealing with the arthritis, but her shingles have resurfaced. She asks your prayer in dealing with the accompanying discomfort.

Kay Denton (Mrs. Kay) is still home and doing pretty well considering the bones in her neck and hands are degenerating as a side effect of her kidney failure. Her thumbs are not particularly useful any more. Mrs. Kay asks everyone who is praying for her know how grateful she is for their prayers. As always, she retains her trust in the Lord and her positive attitude.

Natalie (age 10, leukemia recurrence) has not responded to any treatment since her relapse. Please pray for God’s grace for Natalie and her family to give them peace of heart, soul and mind.

Pray also for God's peace to comfort them and for His leading and wisdom to be very evident to them.

Mark’s business is very very slow, he asks that God point him to new markets and give him guidance in following God’s will that his business might survive and his employees not lose their livelihood.

To Find Employment

Nancy asks your prayers for guidance for her as she seeks employment at both Viejas and Donovan Prison.

Sandra asks that you pray she will be able to find new employment in which she can use her considerable talents to make her new employer more successful. Please pray for her as she searches that she might maintain a good attitude while she looks for work and to look to God for guidance and not her inner self.

Persecuted

Please pray for God’s guidance and protection for all persecuted Christians and those around them.

Thanksgiving

Nick, age 90, grandfather of Dominique Mimnagh, friends of our Langstaff family members in Perth, is a UK citizen had been having difficulties with visa requirements. Various Special Requests

We ask that you pray, please ask God that the Holy Ghost might give you insight into how you might make the lives of your friends and family better. Remember helping others is not just those who you don’t know!

Please join us in praying for God to fill us with the Holy Ghost, even if (or maybe particularly if) we need Him shoved down our throats, to provide inspiration to grow our little church to the glory of God. Our numbers are static; we need God’s inspiration to figure out the next step. Please pray we will open our heart to the gentle prodding of the Holy Ghost; and not do what we have always done expecting a different result.

Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be continue to be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Please ask God to guide the class to new opportunities to make Him known to others. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

National Prayer Time - If Christians really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we might be speechless. During WWII an advisor to Churchill organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every day at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace?

This thought has been taken up here and now, if you would like to participate, pray every day at:

9:00 pm 8:00 pm 7:00 pm 6:00 pm

Eastern Time Central Time Mountain Time Pacific Time

Stop what you are doing and spend one minute praying for the United States, our troops, our citizens and for a return to a Godly nation. It won’t work unless you participate. Encourage others to join us.

Question that only you can ask

What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something

If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.

Epistle Readers

We post the list of Epistle Readers in the Beadle’s Report each week so you can either plan your attendance or your pre-reading as the spirit so moves you.
