Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a warm 64°F under bright blue skies. By the time church started, we were at 84°F and when it ended, the mercury had climbed to 95°F. Kind of hot, but for Alpine at the end of August pretty darn pleasant. Even though we had a number of people on travel, we had 19 for the service.

Gathering Songs

Today Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played more gathering songs than usual. Father Acker is on “vacation” during August each year, thus there is no pre-service class. Some of the class time is taken with extra gathering songs. Today they played:

•Forever

•All creatures of our God and King

•Abide with me

The gathering songs did their job once again; they started with 12 and ended up with 19, including two beautiful young ladies, Phoebe and Sydney!

Propers

Each Sunday there are Propers: special prayers and readings from the Bible. There is a Collect for the Day; that is a single thought prayer, most written either before the re-founding of the Church of England in the 1540s or written by Bishop Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of Canterbury after the re-founding. The Collect for the Day is to be read on Sunday and during Morning and Evening Prayer until the next Sunday. If you have a hard time remembering, “Do I read the Collect from last Sunday or next Sunday during the week?” Remember Sunday is the first day of the week. There are also two Bible readings, the Epistle and the Gospel. While they are “lessons”, they are not the First Lesson and the Second Lesson, they are the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle is normally a reading from one of the various Epistles or letters in the New Testament. The Gospel is a reading from one of the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Collect is said by the priest as a prayer, the Epistle can be read by either a designated reader (as we do in our church or by one of the priests) and the Holy Gospel, which during the service is read by an ordained priest.

The Collect for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity follows:

The Twelfth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve; Pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy; forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord. Amen

Alice Acker read the Epistle, which came from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians, the Third Chapter beginning at the Fourth Verse. Paul reminds us through the Grace of God we can be able ministers of the new testament, on our own we can be in the end no good. If we are able to completely follow the Law, with good intent, we can through that please God, but inasmuch as that is impossible we fall short. The letter of the Law which cannot be complied with is death, the spirit of the Law gives life. That is Jesus’ message, for in the Law is death and in the spirit life. For if there is glory in administering the Law, how much more glory is there in the spirit of the Law, which is Jesus’ message?

SUCH trust have we through Christ to God-ward: not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: how shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

The gradual hymn for today was God made me, led by Warren, Phoebe and Sydney. The time we had the right hymn for the slide; but we still needed Ginger to keep us all straight!

God made me, God made me,

In my bible book it says that God made me.

God loves me, God Loves me,

In my bible book it says that God loves me.

God helps me, God helps me,

In my bible book it says that God helps me.

God keeps me, God keeps me,

In my bible book it says that God keeps me.

Today’s Gospel started in the Seventh Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Mark, beginning at the Thirty-First Verse. Jesus came in to the coast of Decapolis . The people brought unto him a deaf mute. Jesus examined the man, put his fingers in his ears, touched his tongue and said “Ephphatha” , that is, “Be opened.” What Jesus did here for the deaf mute physically is what he does for each of us spiritually. Through Jesus, we hear the Word of God and are given the ability to speak it. Conversely, there are none so deaf as those who will not hear and none so blind as those who will not see. It is up to each of us to choose if we will remain blind, deaf and dumb or open our eyes to see, hear and speak the Word of God. When we receive the gift of sight, hearing and speech we embark on a new life of freedom.

JESUS, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; and were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

Sermon – Why do we make the Sign of the Cross?

Another very good sermon, with the Powerpoint being extremely well done. A close thing though, what with Father’s computer taking its last breath and his new one not being up to speed yet. If you were there you know it, if not you missed it. Just before his vacation started Father Acker told everyone that he would be happy during August to give an explanation of what we do on any subject they had questions on. In this case, someone asked, “Why do we make the Sign of the Cross?

The short answer is that for those who use the personal Signing of the Cross: it is a Sacramental sign of the Gospel; reminder of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost; it is to remind us of Jesus, who:

Died on the Cross for your sins

Raised on the third day

Appeared to many witnesses

The Sign of the Cross is a ritual hand motion made by members of many branches of Christianity symbolizing the Cross on Calvary by tracing the shape of the cross in the air or on one's own body. The form used by Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, the Oriental Orthodox and the Roman Church.

The sign of the Cross is made by touching the hand sequentially to the forehead, lower chest or navel area, and both shoulders, accompanied by the Trinitarian formula: at the forehead: In the name of the Father; at the stomach or heart: and of the Son; across the shoulders: and of the Holy Spirit/Ghost; and finally: Amen. There are several interpretations, according to Church Fathers: [1] the forehead symbolizes Heaven; the stomach, the earth; the shoulders, the place and sign of power. Also, the hand to the forehead may be seen as a prayer to the Father for wisdom; the hand to the stomach as a prayer to the Son who became incarnate; and the hand to the shoulders as a prayer to the Holy Spirit.

There are many variations between various groups. Amongst Anglicans, some make the sign, others do not. Signing was one of the areas of contention during the Reformation with the Evangelical or Protestant arm rejecting the act as superstition or “magic” and the Conservative or Catholic arm justifying it as an outward and visible sign of devotion and a reminder to the person making the Sign. That division carries through to the present day. Look around the congregation, you will find some making the Sign of the Cross and others, no less pious, not. It is not required, if it works for you, like it works for Father Acker, now you know why!

New Nametags

We had two new nametags today, Phoebe and Sydney Strouse, granddaughters of Tom and Ginger Strouse.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

No reported anniversaries or birthdays today.

After Church Hospitality

Traci Huber brought snacks today, a beautiful veggie platter, four cheeses and four dozen dog nut holes. Your Beadle brings up the number because Aaron was concerned they brought too many and Nick was concerned they brought too few. Turns out Traci brought the exact right number and Nick made sure of it.

Command Master Chief Brewer Macauley had the duty today, coffee was great! Father Acker made his low carb lemonade. The lemonade was great and gone!

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/

Prayer is an extremely important activity.

It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?

Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?

Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at least once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?

You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?

Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team

If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask their names and purpose be kept confidential, then only Father Acker will pray for them.

Peaceful Transition

Hal Cochran, a good friend of Al Ryan, is nearing the end of his time here on earth. A long time smoker, there is nothing more that can be done for his cancer. Please pray for a peaceful transition for Al from this world to that of our Lord. His wife Lorraine passed away five years ago from diabetes complications. His two sons Tom and Paul are taking their father’s impending departure very hard. Please pray for Tom, Paul and the rest of Hal’s family and friends who remain behind.

Repose of the Soul

Julie Fish, a 30 year old daughter of a friend of Melanie Zimmers, passed the afternoon of 23 August 2009. She leaves behind a husband and 3 children aged 2-5. When Julie was pregnant with their last child, she was diagnosed with this unusual cancer that normally runs in men aged 50 and older. It is a rapid growing one that takes the pancreas and liver, so it is very painful and brutal. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for comfort for her husband and family who remain behind.

Pauline Gray passed away the morning of 23 August 2009 due to double pneumonia in Pensacola, Florida. She is the mother of Commander Obra Gray for whom we prayed while he was deployed to Iraq and on various carrier deployments. Pray for the repose of her soul and for comfort for her husband and family who remain behind. Give thanks Obra was able to be with her when she left for home. Pray for safe travel for her family coming together this week.

Frank Toews and Ryan Williams members of the Christian African Inland Mission were killed as the result of an aircraft accident on 1 August 2009, near the Nairobi Willson Airport. Pilot Frank Toews did not survive the accident. Mechanic Ryan Williams was badly injured. On 7 August 2009, he succumbed to burn injuries after being medivaced to South Africa. Please pray for the repose of their souls and for their families who remain here on earth. In particular we ask that you pray for comfort and guidance for the families who remain behind here on earth having lost their husband, father, brother and son; for Tiffany and the Toews kids; for Dawn and the Williams kids. Pray also for those of AIM Air who have lost two fine comrades. Remember always that freedom is not free. Not our country and not our Lord. He brings us freedom, but the earthly cost can be high. It is paid with the blood, sweat and tears of His closest.

Ken passed away 4 August 2009. Please pray for his soul and comfort for his family who remain behind.

Her husband, Eric, is requesting leave or delay in deployment overseas on Monday.

Jackie was involved in a rollover car accident, her passenger was not injured, but she sustained a serious head injury. She is in an induced coma. Please pray the swelling will subside and she will regain consciousness and return to a normal life. Pray for the medical team treating her that they might do their best. Pray for her and her family who are very worried about her that they might lay their worries out for God to carry.

Bashir Ahmed, father of Shamim Gray, father in law of Commander Obra Gray for whom we prayed while he was deployed to Iraq and on various carrier deployments, is gravely ill. Bashir lives in London. He was in the hospital for some time. They have been able to do little for him and have sent him home. It should be good for him to be home. His wife will be able to rest now and he may well do better being at home Please pray God will deliver a miraculous recovery for Bashir; if that not be God’s will, a departure in peace to His world for him. Please pray God will extend His Grace to Bashir and his family and that they will accept. Shamim keeps her faith in the Lord. Above all, please pray also for his family to open their hearts to accept all God’s love will bring them.

Tom S, recovering from brain surgery and continuing radiation treatment.

Maureen had two heart valves replaced on Sunday in Orange County. Surgery went smoothly and the recovery is going well. She remains in SICU, but on Tuesday she had walked 100 feet and was feeding herself sitting upright in bed. The external pace maker continues to keep her heart rate up so as to provide sufficient blood flow to her kidneys and a couple of the drainage tubes are still in place removing fluid. As the heart settles down, having been messed with, it should keep her pressure at the correct level and fluid will be properly removed so the pacemaker can be removed and the drainage tube come out. She is doing remarkably well and will remain on antibiotics to ensure any residual infection is minimized. Scott and Maureen thank you for your prayers!

Vera Zimmers had successful surgery last Monday for early stage two colon cancer. That is the end of the treatment, no chemotherapy. Please pray for a complete recovery.

Madelynn Calvert born Sunday 7 June 2009 to Sarah at 24 weeks and one pound seven ounces. She is doing well and at her second month weighs is 3 pounds 1oz. She is having surgery this weekend to put her abdomen back together, no more colostomy bag. She is doing good, but not eating; surgery will be now instead of at 8 pounds. Good news, her brain bleed has resolved on its own and both eye exams came back great! Please give thanks for all the good to date and continue to pray for her continued growth and improvement.

Mark Wilson underwent skin cancer surgery on his face 21 May 2009. He just completed four weeks of radiation treatment. He is concerned about the effect this will have on his business. Please pray for his peace of mind and well as remission of the cancer.

Hy cannot put much weight on her leg. She does not know why and so far the doctors have not been able to diagnose a problem. But, things are much better and she is getting around on using a cane. She asks you pray for her healing and guidance for those treating her.

Mary Garcia fell and broke her hip on 18 April 2009. She had successful surgery and made it home. She is having problems with diet and her diabetes. Please pray for Mary to accept God’s help with her various difficulties and also for Gil to have strength to care for her.

Lise, originally diagnosed with "peritoneal cancer", has undergone multiple surgeries and chemotherapy. Lise's doctors hope she is in remission, but are uncertain and do not know if she will be with us for more than a year. Her friend requests that you please pray for continued healing and full remission for Lise; and, and please pray that God might give wisdom and guidance to all of her medical providers. Lise appreciates your support and prayers.

Jan has just recovered from her fifth cancer surgery. The medical prognosis is good. Her friend asks you pray for Jan's continued healing and complete remission; and, please pray God might give wisdom and guidance to all of her medical providers.

Lauralee underwent a lumpectomy on Friday after Thanksgiving. Another anomaly has been discovered and she is back into preventative radiation treatment. Please pray for a complete remission of the cancer. Pray also Lauralee will maintain her great attitude and trust in God.

Tim, brother of Lauralee, had a stroke and extremely high blood pressure and is now recovering. Pray for a full recovery.

Mary Parker is home. Please give thanks for her great recovery and continued progress.

Evelyn Hunt has asked for prayers of dealing with the residual pain and other problems from her leg. She appreciates the phone calls. Most importantly, pray for her to keep a good attitude and maintain a trust in God, so she will not worry.

Miney Farrell is thankful for her recovery from pneumonia. She is enjoying having her son and daughter in law back from a month trip around the Pacific.

Kay Denton (Mrs. Kay) is still home and doing pretty well considering the bones in her neck and hands are degenerating as a side effect of her kidney failure. Mrs. Kay asks that everyone who is praying for her know how grateful she is for their prayers. As always, she retains her trust in the Lord and her positive attitude.

Nicole Ethridge - age 28, mother of two - has a form of liver disease FSCS, which was causing her liver to shut down. The disease has apparently gone into semi-remission. She is doing very well and coming off medications. Please pray for her continued remission and her continued faith and good spirits, as well as strength to take care of her children.

Caroline (age 11, leukemia recurrence) is doing very well following her bone marrow transplant 17 July 2008. Please keep praying as Caroline has a 40% chance of recurrence of her leukemia.

Natalie (age 10, leukemia recurrence) has not responded to any treatment since her relapse. She is nearing the end of her time here on earth unless there is a God given miraculous remission of the cancer. Her family knows Natalie is in God's hands and they are praying for a miracle. Help them with their faith, let them understand God does not always give what we want, but what we need. As she apparently nears the end of her time here on earth please pray for her transition to home and for her family who will be, of necessity, left behind.

Free Teen Guitar Class

Please join us in praying that the Free Teen Guitar Class will be an opportunity for God to work in the lives of the kids and their families. Help us to let the love of our Lord shine through us into their lives, putting Him first, so that He might enter in to their hearts and lives.

Question that only you can ask

What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something

If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion. If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.

The near future, as well as Next Sunday

Next Sunday is the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity. Next Sunday our lovely organist Marianne will be back from her holiday in England, but still no organ music as it will be the Sunday of the month which is Free Teen Guitar Class Sunday. Father Ironhand’s kids have been practicing, but the question is will we hear the usual lovely Anglican hymns with guitar music or will it be rock favorites such as Pray and Shout, Johnny B. Goode, I ain’t nothing but a church mouse and the like? Guess you will have to come and see or trust the Beadle to report.

Nothing much during the upcoming week. Sunday will be fun, though. Worth the wait.

See you next week on Sunday!

Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

Today was the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a moderate 57°F under bright blue skies. By the time church ended, we were at 82°F. Summer weather does not get much better than this! Although we still had people on travel, we had 20 people at the service.

Gathering Songs

Today Father Ironhand, Nick Patton and Jack Arnold played more gathering songs than usual. Father Acker is on “vacation” during August each year, thus there is no pre-service class. Some of the class time is taken with extra gathering songs. Today they played:

God of Nations

In the secret

All creatures of our God

How great is our God

The bad news is the gathering songs did not do their job today; they started with 20 and ended up with 20; the good news is 20 people could tell time and showed up on time!

The Collect for the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity follows:

The Eleventh Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.

O GOD, who declarest thy almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity; Mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we, running the way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holly Lizak read the Epistle, which came from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, the Fifteenth Chapter beginning at the First Verse. Paul tells us he is delivering the message he received, the Good News of the Saving Grace of God through Jesus. He recounts the death and resurrection of Jesus; noting the various witnesses to the resurrection, including himself. He goes on to say, if he, who he categorizes as the least of the apostles, not even meet to be called an apostle due to his persecution of the Church of God, can be forgiven and work the Work of God, who cannot?

BRETHERN, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: after that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.”

The gradual hymn for today was God made me, lead by Warren and Cory:

We had the wrong hymn for the slide; luckily Ginger kept us all straight!

God made me, God made me,

In my bible book it says that God made me.

God loves me, God Loves me,

In my bible book it says that God loves me.

God helps me, God helps me,

In my bible book it says that God helps me.

God keeps me, God keeps me,

In my bible book it says that God keeps me.

Today’s Gospel started in the Eighteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Ninth Verse. Jesus tells a parable to an audience which apparently consisted of some self-righteous people. The parable is that of a Pharisee and a publican both of whom pray in the temple. While the Pharisee might well have been a “better” man than the publican, he clearly was not the man he thought he was, for he “prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.” Quite the holy fellow. The publican, quite aware of how much he fell shot of God’s perfection stood “afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” Jesus told his audience, “this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” None of us is truly good, we can only strive to be better and look to our Lord to help us.

JESUS spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Offertory Hymn

One of the stand by hymns we use a lot is Hymn 243 – I sing a song of the saints of God, by an English lady, Lesbia Scott, categorized as “Children’s Hymn”, it is your Beadle’s favorite. Why, well he likes it, it was his father’s favorite. That is reason enough. Plus, it is easy to sing and easy to understand and it has an outstanding message:

I sing a song of the saints of God,

Patient and brave and true,

Who toiled and fought and lived and died

For the Lord they loved and knew.

And one was a doctor, and one was a queen,

And one was a shepherdess on the green:

They were all of them saints of God--and I mean,

God helping, to be one too.

They loved their Lord so dear, so dear,

And his love made them strong;

And they followed the right, for Jesus' sake,

The whole of their good lives long.

And one was a soldier, and one was a beast,

And one was slain by a fierce wild priest:

And there's not any reason, no, not the least

Why I shouldn't be one too.

They lived not only in ages past,

There are hundreds of thousands still;

The world is bright with the joyous saints

Who love to do Jesus' will.

You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea,

In church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea;

For the saints of God are just folk like me,

And I mean to be one too.

Sermon – Trust

This was a very good sermon, the Powerpoint was extremely well done. If you were there you know it, if not you missed it.

God ask us to trust Him. We ask God to show us His Plan before we trust Him. To illustrate the concept, Father Acker told of a climber approaching a mountain who saw a man with sign - Ropes $5.00.

He knew better than the man, he went on. About a third of the way up at a hard spot he saw him again with sign - Ropes $5.00:

He knew better than the man and went on.

Almost to the top at an impossible place, now truly in need of help, the man appeared again. Rope in hand, ready to help, but with a new sign - Ropes $5,000.00.

We need to put our trust in the Lord. We cannot do it ourselves. Saint Paul had been Saul, the rising star of the Pharisees, a rule keeper among rule keepers. Until he met the Lord on the road to Damascus. What did he learn?

Jesus is Lord

and

Put your trust in the Lord

He warned, “I was rescued from the Lion’s mouth.” 2 Timothy 4.17

So, what is God’s Plan we are to trust in?

Jesus died for our sins

Jesus was buried

Jesus was raised on the 3rd day

Jesus appeared to many

You can say that Christ died for our sins. You may say that the Father has forgiven us because Christ has done for us what we ought to have done. You may say that we are washed in the blood of the Lamb. You may say that Christ has defeated death. They are all true. If any of them do not appeal to you, leave it alone and get on with the formula that does. And, whatever you do, do not start quarrelling with other people because they use a different formula from yours.” (CS Lewis - Mere Christianity)

Sonny Discar is in Grossmont Hospital with H1H1 virus - Swine flu, which he apparently contacted in France. In addition, he has staph infection. This will likely lengthen his ICU stay and can delay breathing on his own again. Sonny’s family asks that we pray the staph infection be eradicated within Sonny’s body; that those who are frightened of the Swine Flu be at peace; that Sonny’s body fight this disease effectively; that the doctors identify each situation and choose the best treatment method; for his family to walk in peace and strength; for Sonny to begin breathing on his own again; for his wife Melinda and his children and family to trust the Lord and bring encouragement to each other.

What is the “Christian Year “ or “Liturgical Year”?

Liturgy based Christian churches who consider themselves catholic, or universal, use a Christian Calendar which has a pre-set annual cycle of liturgical seasons which determines when Feasts, Memorials, Commemorations, and Solemnities are to be observed and which portions of Scripture are to be read.

Distinct liturgical colors are used in connection with different seasons of the liturgical year. The dates of the festivals vary somewhat between the Western (Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Protestant) churches and the Eastern Orthodox Churches, though the sequence and logic is the same.

Most Anglican churches colours similar to the Roman Rite, with some, for instance, black in place of red on Good Friday. Some churches use black at services for the dead, but more commonly white or purple is used. For historical reasons much of the worldwide Anglican Communion takes a noticeable lead from the practice of the Church of England, suggesting white throughout the Sundays after Epiphany as a distinct "Epiphany season", with ordinary time commencing the day after Candlemas.

Because colours are not established by liturgical law in Anglican churches, variations are common. Notable variations include the use of blue in Advent and "Lenten array" in Lent, consisting of unbleached muslin, linen, or burlap (varying in colour but usually ranging from off-white to beige), with crimson or black accents.

The dates of many feasts vary from year to year (Moveable Feasts) due to the variation in the date of Easter, and all other dates follow from that. The extent to which the fasts and festivals are celebrated also varies between churches; in general Protestant churches observe far fewer of them than Catholic and Orthodox churches, and in particular are less likely to celebrate feasts of the Virgin Mary and the Saints.

The liturgical cycle divides the year into a series of seasons, each with their own mood, theological emphases, and modes of prayer, which can be signified by different ways of decorating churches, vestments for clergy, scriptural readings, themes for preaching and even different traditions and practices often observed personally or in the home.

In churches that follow the liturgical year, the scripture passages for each Sunday (and even each day of the year in the Anglican tradition) are specified by a list called a lectionary. Anglicans and Lutherans have traditionally followed the lectionary since the days of the Protestant Reformation. Since the 1960s, the adoption and use of lectionaries in other Protestant churches (Methodist, Reformed, United, etc.) increased. This has led to a greater awareness of the Christian year among Protestants in the later decades of the 20th century, especially among mainline denominations.

Biblical calendars are based on the cycle of the new moon. The year is from the first new moon on or after the spring equinox to the next new moon on or after the spring equinox, rather than an arbitrary starting point like the modern calendar.

Western Christian liturgical calendars use the same cycle as the Roman or Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, including Lutheran, Anglican, and Protestant calendars, since this cycle significantly pre-dates the Reformation.

Generally, the liturgical seasons in western Christianity are:

Advent

Christmas

Ordinary Time (Time after Epiphany)

Lent

Easter

Green Season or Ordinary Time (Time after Trinity)

The near future, as well as Next Sunday

Next Sunday is the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity. For the next two Sundays it will be all guitar music. Our lovely organist Marianne is traveling to England for the next two Sundays and the third Sunday is Free Teen Guitar Class Sunday. While the organist is away, the rodents will play. The question is will we hear the usual lovely Anglican hymns with guitar music or will it be rock favorites such as Pray and Shout, Johnny B. Goode, I ain’t nothing but a church mouse and the like? Guess you will have to come and see or trust the Beadle to report.

Nothing much during the upcoming week. Sunday will be fun, though. Worth the wait.

See you next week on Sunday!
