Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany

Today was the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany. Sunrise temperature on Mount Olympus was a cool 41°F under beautiful bright blue skies. Down the hill at church, the temperature picked up to very nice 68°F, by the time church was over we were at 72°F. Considering the ice storms in Kentucky, it was incredible weather! Either the lovely weather or Free Teen Guitar Class Sunday drew a nice group of 27 people for the service.

People often ask, “How come the congregation picture is from the back?” The answer is simple, that is where I usually stand at the start of the service. But, this time it is from the front, looking into the congregation. So, there!

Free Teen Guitar Class
Today was the first Sunday of the month. This is the customary Sunday for Father Ironhand’s Free Teen Guitar Class to play for our service. With a brand new class having just formed, we thought there might be a number of new kids for the Sunday service; sadly the number of new kids at the service was zero. On the other hand, zero is a number. And, even more important, those who did show: Andrew, Nick, Jack and Father Ironhand had a really great time. A side product of the smaller number of players is that all the guitar players were ready well before the service and played all the gathering songs:

• We three kings - jazz
• Forever
• Amazing Grace
• Just a closer walk

We were sad that none of the new students showed for the performance. It is pretty early, maybe next month. Too bad, though. There were snacks out the kazoo!

Father Acker teaches the Free Teen Guitar Class on Wednesdays. The class plays for us on the first Sunday of the month. They have about six other performances throughout the year around the village. If you know a young person who would like to learn the guitar, call Father Acker or check out the website:

Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 370 days by popular demand
Today continued the fifty-three week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am. As is customary, the class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92

We have made our way through the Bible to the second book of the New Testament – Mark. The Gospel of Mark is the second of the four canonical gospels in the New Testament. It was written by Mark the Evangelist (also known as John Mark), a cousin of Barnabas. Mark was young at the time Jesus was here on earth, in his early teens; not a disciple or apostle at the time. The gospel narrates the life of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to the resurrection, but it concentrates particularly on the last week of his life.

The Gospel is really divided into two parts:
• Who is Jesus?
• What does it mean?

The Gospel starts out clearly:

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

The Gospel records Jesus’ query, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answers simply, and correctly, “You are Christ?”

With that answer, Mark goes on to record what it means to be the Christ. The Jews were looking for a Messiah to bring them a New World order with the Jews on top and the Romans on the bottom. A New Leader to lead them into world dominance. What they got, and many rejected, was a savior interested in their souls. Jesus gave them “The Plan”:

• If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
• Jesus was going to Jerusalem
• To the Temple, the place of Sacrifice
• Jesus would be the perfect Sacrifice
o Jesus would give His life
o To give Life to His people

Mark can be summarized as:

• Proclamation of the Messiah
• Jesus’ teaching around Lake Galilee
• Pivot: Who do you say I am?
• Going to Jerusalem and the Temple, sacrificial animals, one life in exchange for another
• Jesus’ sacrificial death, burial, and resurrection appearances.

It is only at the end that they start to understand what Jesus means!

Don Patton read the Epistle for today, which came from the Thirteenth Chapter of Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans beginning at the First Verse:

LET every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God; and they that resist shall receive to themselves condemnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

The Gospel for today came from the Eighth Chapter of the Gospel of St. Matthew beginning at the First Verse.

WHEN he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, and saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

Sermon - Faith – Being under Authority
In the second half of today’s Gospel, Saint Matthew tells the story of the Faithful Centurion. A Centurion was a Roman Officer, the lowest ranking Centurion was commander of 100 men, thus the name Centurion. Later those numbers dropped to 60, then rose to 80 as the command structure changed, but the name Centurion stuck. Higher ranking Centurions would command multiple smaller units of 100 men each. Thus the Centurion is normally held to be similar to a modern day land or air forces Captain. A man of no small authority, well aware of the chain of command and organizational structure.

Jesus spent three years teaching in the area surrounding Lake Galilee; healing people as he moved from town to town. One of the very important stories that survived was that of the Faithful Centurion. As he came towards Capernaum, a Centurion approached Him on behalf of his sick servant. Jesus offered to come to his home to heal the sick man. The Centurion, well aware of Jesus’ divinity and his own sin, said to Him, “Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof. But, speak the Word only and my servant shall be healed.” Jesus noted his great faith in Him and told him, “Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.”

The Centurion believed in Jesus, he knew that if Jesus commanded it, it would be so. He knew Jesus did not have to travel to his home, He only had to say it would be so to make it thus.

We use a slight variation on this very verse just before communion in the challenge response:

V: Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof.

R: But speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

Do you have the faith of the Centurion? He speaks the Word. Your soul will be healed if you will only hear the spoken Word.

Birthdays and Anniversaries
There were no reported anniversaries today. We celebrated Dru Arnold’s 54th birthday today with her. Dru’s actual birthday is tomorrow, Ground Hog Day, and we are all anxiously awaiting her shadow report to see if there will be six more weeks of winter.

After Church Hospitality
Because today was Free Teen Guitar Class Sunday and we had a promise of many kids attending, today’s after church snacks were a group effort: Alice Acker brought chocolate chip cookies, Jan Macauley brought mint chocolate chip cookies and the world’s best deviled eggs and Dru Arnold brought a great honking carrot cake, as well as a veggie plate. Dru was disappointed the carrot cake was missing the apricot mouse filling and the Beadle was delighted. The snacks were absolutely superb!

Command Master Brewer Macauley was on brew duty today and produced wonderful coffee, Father Acker made his signature low carb lemonade.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does.  Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs.  In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.

The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.

Who can be on the list?
Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No!  The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you.  We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are.  If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.

What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.

How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.

What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want.  Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team.  Ask for what you want.  It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet.  For typical examples, see the list below.

Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email.  It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!

Please note that on the yellow (maybe green or orange, if you get an old one) cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team".  Those names will be said in church and appear here.  Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, and then only Father Acker will know to pray for them.

She had her first eye surgery several days ago and the surgery went better than expected.  Her second (and final) surgery is scheduled for later on this week. Please pray for her to understand God is there throughout all this; He does not test us; we are imperfect beings, including our bodies; all things are possible through Him; He always answers our prayers, though sometimes we don’t want to hear the answer and other times do not understand the answer. Please pray for her as she prepares to depart this world for home that she might be confident in the love of God and her Lord Jesus Christ and thus make the transition in peace. She has asked in particular that you pray for peace in her life and for her family. Please pray that she will grow closer to God and to her family during the time she has left here on earth and that her family will do likewise. Pray that her family who will remain here on earth might be able to put their cares and worries aside for the moment and focus on God’s love for their mother; as well as her love for them. May they concentrate on the unity and not on the temporary separation.

Easter Service Question
The parish is considering doing something different for Easter. We are considering having a "California Sunrise" THAT WOULD BE OUR NORMAL 8:30am TIME service in the park as an out reach program to the community. Last year in November, we had a service in the park when we forgot to pick up the keys to the auditorium. We thought it might be nice to have the Easter service in the park. We would publicize it, people could dress appropriately, and there would be a rain backup indoor location at the Community Center. This time, we would place the altar in front of the stage and have at least 50 folding chairs set out for the congregation.

The suggestion has been made that we try something different to spread the Word. This may not be bleeding edge, it is a bit different from usual.

This is not set in stone and we are looking for input. If you have any thoughts on the matter, please share them with Father Acker or one of the Vestry members.

Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate?  Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material.  Help us help you.  Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer.  Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know.  But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.

I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across.  While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion.

If you want to write something, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to: thebeadle@mac.com.
