Eleventh Sunday after Trinity - Senior Warden's Party - 3 August 2008
Today was the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity Sunday. The weather was pretty darn nice for summer with a sunrise temperature of 69°F on Mount Olympus. By the time church was over we were at 77°F. Good thing, because the air conditioning was off! The lovely weather brought out a total of 25 participants by service start.
Free Teen Guitar Class – www.freeteenguitarclass.com
This was the first Sunday of the month, the Sunday each month where the Free Teen Guitar Class provides all the music. As most of you know, each Sunday Father Acker and Jack Arnold (along with any of the FTGC kids who may come) provide music for the gathering songs. On the first Sunday of the month, the kids provide all the music for the entire service. Today’s players were Ashley Turner, Cole Davis, Nick Patton, Jack Arnold and Father Ironhand. Just to show you how effective the classes are, Cole has been playing for two weeks now and Nick for ten days. They did great and are their way to being full fledged guitarists.
Father Acker’s Pre-Service Class - Around the Bible in 140 days by popular demand
Today continued the twenty week tour of the Bible, 10 minutes of teaching each Sunday, beginning at 8:30am. The class started with one of the Collects for the Day, applicable to the subject at hand, in this case the Second Sunday in Advent:
BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Second Sunday of Advent BCPp92
Today we finished the Book of Daniel, the last of the four major prophets which predicts the coming of the Messiah. We were supposed to get to Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, perhaps next week.
When Jesus came in to Jerusalem, he came riding a donkey, yet there were crowds waiting for him.
Why?
In the First Book of Kings, Chapter One, Verse Twenty-Three, we find:
The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon: And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
When Solomon came to assume the kingship, he came on a mule, so the Son of God when He came to assume the mantle.
But why did the people think this was the day?
Daniel, Chapter Nine. They had all read Daniel, Chapter Nine:
In Verse 22, the Angel Gabriel speaks to Daniel, “Daniel, I have come here to help you understand the prophecy…7 times 70 years {490 years} is the length of time God has set for the freeing of your people and your holy city {Jerusalem} from sin and evil… Note this and understand it: From the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until God’s chosen leader come, 7x7 years {49 years} will pass. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, and will stand for 7x62 years {434 years}, but this will be a time of troubles {total 483 years}. And at the end of that time God’s chosen leader will be killed unjustly. The city and the Temple will be destroyed by an invading army of a powerful ruler.

Arrival of the Messiah Passover, April 6, AD32
Chapter Nine of the Book of Daniel predicts the coming of the Lord, yet the people were looking for someone to throw out the Romans, to be the King of this Earth. Who they got was the Son of God who came to throw out the moneychangers and ripoff artists from the temple, to set aside sin, to set aside death and to bring eternal salvation. What a disappointment!
Stephanie Boyd read the Epistle, which came from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, the Fifteenth Chapter beginning at the First Verse. Paul tells us he is delivering the message he received, the Good News of the Saving Grace of God through Jesus. He recounts the death and resurrection of Jesus; noting the various witnesses to the resurrection, including himself. He goes on to say, if he, who he categorizes as the least of the apostles, not even meet to be called an apostle due to his persecution of the Church of God, can be forgiven and work the Work of God, who cannot?
Bethern, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: after that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.”
Today’s Gospel started in the Eighteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the Ninth Verse. Jesus tells a parable to an audience which apparently consisted of some self-righteous people. The parable is that of a Pharisee and a publican both of whom pray in the temple. While the Pharisee might well have been a “better” man than the publican, he clearly was not the man he thought he was, for he “prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.” Quite the holy fellow. The publican, quite aware of how much he fell shot of God’s perfection stood “afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” Jesus told his audience, “this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” None of us is truly good, we can only strive to be better and look to our Lord to help us.
Jesus spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Sermon – What is it about?
Two years ago, driving back from the Carvin Guitar Factory with a couple of the Free Teen Guitar Class members, one of them asked, “What is Christianity about?”
A very good question. There are many answers and most of them long, but the simplest answer comes right from the name: Christianity is about Christ!
There are four main points to remember:
• He died for our sins
• He was buried
• He was raised to Life
There are real witnesses to Jesus and we are to witness to others of our experience
He died for our sins
The key is not “Being Good”, but rather “Being Forgiven”, knowing you need God’s help and knowing where to find it.
He was buried
The wages of sin are death. The natural consequence of sin is death. Sin leads to death. Jesus took your death in His. He swapped places with you. He died, so you would not.
He was raised to Life
His Heavenly Father gave Jesus “a new life” with a real new body. A bodily resurrection, possible only through Him.
In Jesus, we are given “new life.”
There are real witnesses to Jesus and we are to witness to others of our experience
Jesus was not a fairy tale, no matter how compelling. Though God, He was a real man, who died a real death, who underwent a real resurrection and came back to tell about it. He was seen and experienced by many who told their stories, who witnessed to others.
Now, it is your turn to live your life with God, to provide witness to others, to you’re your life with purpose – God’s purpose.

Senior Warden’s Brunch
There was no traditional after church hospitality time today because the first Sunday in August is the Senior Warden’s Brunch. Ben Lizak and his lovely wife Holly put on an after church brunch each year. If you have come to one in the past, you are unlikely to ever miss one again. If you have never been, you are really missing a great time.
This year Holly had her traditional sausage strata, a vegetarian quiche, corned beef noodle casserole, Caesar Salad, sliced tomatoes, pumpkin bread, and brownies.
Ben was handing out fresh mimosas, as well as the usual soft drinks, iced teas, beers, water and the like. Father Acker brought his low carb lemonade.
Most everyone who was at church made it to the brunch. A couple of people had prior appointments. Sometimes we are reluctant to go to after or before church events at others houses. Why? Sometimes we don’t want to be beholding to them, other times we don’t feel like “imposing”, other times we fear others will think us piggy, still other times we fear we will be poisoned by just plain lousy food.
While he cannot speak for any other congregation, ;et the Beadle set you straight about this one:
• We love to share, food tastes better shared;
• We welcome company;
• No one will expect you to “reciprocate”, I think all our Sundays are already taken, anyway!
• There is plenty of food;
• The worst cooks in the congregation are truly great. The “disasters” our cooks speak of would be monthly specials at most restaurants.
The real bottom line – We have a great time and would love to share it with you.

People in our Prayers - http://www.blessedtrinityprayerteam.blogspot.com/
Prayer is an extremely important activity.
It is not that God knows not our needs, for He surely does. Yet, Jesus commanded us to ask God for those same needs. In addition to the obvious of asking God for help, offering thanksgiving and the like, prayer helps us focus our thoughts on how we might do God's work.
The Prayer Team of the Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity was established to help our members and fellow Christians pray for those in need and to give thanks as well for the blessings we have been granted.
Who can be on the list? Do I have to be a member of the Blessed Trinity Church to be prayed for? No! The only qualification to be on the list is that you want our prayer team to pray for you. We are Christians and are happy to pray for you, no matter who you are. If you want help from God, you are our kind of people.
What is the commitment from the prayer team?
Each member of the team will pray for the desired outcome at last once per day.
How do I get myself or someone else on the prayer list?
You can email one of the prayer team leaders: Greg - gnchase@cox.net or Dru - dru@descansorodents.com, or call the church office at (619) 722-1772 or fill out a prayer card at church.
What should I ask for?
Depends on what you want. Some people merely want God to be asked to heal their ills and be mentioned by their first name, others want a specific outcome and / or have more of their personal information known to the team. Ask for what you want. It is your desire and need for prayer the team is attempting to meet. For typical examples, see the list below.
Updating the Team
If you are on our prayer list, or if you have submitted a person that you have asked us to pray for, please update one of the team members or Father Acker in person, by telephone or email. It helps to be able to pray specifically for these individuals including their specific needs; plus if they get better, it is nice to give thanks!
Please note that on the green or orange cards at church, you can ask that those to be prayed for have their names disseminated to the "prayer team". Those names will be said in church and appear here. Or, you can ask that their names and purpose be kept confidential, and then only Father Acker will know to pray for them.

Repose of Soul
Kyle
Baby Marie, daughter of Bill and Andrea Baker of St. Andrew’s in Jacksonville, Oregon, despite all efforts she was not able to develop her lungs. She gave all she had to the effort as did her family and the medical team providing her treatment. From Richard, our Bishop, “Little Marie has returned to the Lord from whence she came. The little one just had too much to overcome. It was quite devastating to all but recognizing the Lord's authority in all things she will be remembered for her brief struggle.” Remember, all we can do is the best we can. She did. Most of us have trouble saying that.
Her family who remain here on earth are in our prayers. Please pray for the Baker family that they might strengthen their trust in God.

She has swelling from fluid pooling and is also dehydrated. Please pray for her medication to be stabilized and her body to adapt to allow her to heal, recover and return home. Please pray also for her family who are very concerned for her.
Joshua Hamilton fell out of a car on last Sunday morning. He sustained a closed head injury and potential spinal cord injuries. Joshua has undergone two surgeries to relieve pressure on his brain. He was in an induced coma, the coma inducing medication was just discontinued. He has not yet awakened.
Joshua is the older brother of James Hamilton, one of our Free Teen Guitar Class kids. He is married with a wife and two children.
From Father Acker - I saw Josh Friday in SICU. Jo Ann said they stopped the drug induced coma, but he hasn’t wakened yet and may be in a coma. They will likely do a tracheotomy Monday rather than doing the breathing tube as this will allow them to back off on the ventilator, as he is still not able to manage breathing without assistance. Please pray for his regaining consciousness and getting off the ventilator. I’ll be stopping in to pray on my way to the airport in the morning. Fr. Acker
Sara, a good friend of John an old family friend of the Ackers. Sara has two small children and an abusive ex-husband. The ex-husband took the children and Sara is in court trying to get them back. Sara asks you pray that God’s will for these children will be realized and they will be put in the best custody situation possible. Please pray for God’s guidance in the lives of the ex-husband, John and Sara and that they might hear Him.
George, husband of LaVonda and friend of Susanne Barrett, whose bladder cancer has returned. They live in northern Georgia. Please pray for their children, Megan and George Jr., as they adjust to the news. Surgery will be occurring as soon as a few more tests are run. George has also been in excruciating back pain for the past month which may or may not be related to the return of the cancer. Of your Christian charity, please pray for George, LaVonda, Megan, and George Jr.
Glenn Finch – is awake and walking. Please keep praying for complete healing and for his family who have been consistently at his side. Also, pray for the doctors and nurses that attend to him. The family asks for your prayers for his healing and their strength. They are grateful for such loving, caring friends.
Martha Stevens has been re-affected by vertigo which has bothered her in the past. This form of spatial disorientation is very disconcerting and bothersome. Please pray for her rapid and complete recovery.
Evelyn Hunt is just not feeling right. She has generalized shaking, pressure in her head, blurred vision, nausea and fatigue. Although she has undergone many tests, they have not been able to determine the cause of the problem. She goes back to the doctor on Tuesday for more results. Please pray for a determination of the cause of her problems, a cure and a cessation of the symptoms.
Miney Farrell has had pain and weakness in her leg that has been limiting her activity.
Lorraine Winkles is still dealing with shingles (now over 18 months). The level of discomfort varies but the condition is persisting.
Lona Walsh is in significant discomfort, but it looks like it is not Lupus. A recent MRI indicates she needs shoulder surgery on both sides, not great news, but much better than Lupus. She hopes for more information shortly, in the mean time, she asks that you continue your prayers for healing.
Duncan Bridewell and his brother John Bridewell were in an aircraft accident in the Utah wilderness and were trapped in the aircraft over night. Duncan has a collapsed lung, ankle injuries plus the usual "I just got beat up" stuff. John has a broken leg, arm, plus the beat up thing. Please pray a prayer of thanksgiving for their survival and pray for their rapid and complete recovery.
Kay Denton (Mrs. Kay) – is home from the hospital now, though she continues to have with heart, kidney and lung difficulties with fluid buildup on the lungs and what may be a form of septic arthritis. She is doing much better. Every so often she has a flare-up of the severe shoulder pain, accompanied by chills and shivering- but the last time it happened was much relieved by Cortisone injections. Also, please pray for her to maintain her positive attitude. As always, she retains her trust in the Lord, she thankful to get her positive attitude back. Pray also for Mrs. Kay’s family and her close friend Len who are under great stress that they might also keep their trust in the Lord. Mrs. Kay sent the Prayer Team a card and asks that everyone who is praying for her know how grateful she is for their prayers.
Joy has a reoccurrence of abdominal cancer, which is non-operable. She is currently undergoing radiation treatment. She and her family ask your prayers for the treatment to do good and for her to tolerate it better. More importantly, she asks God’s help to deal with the pain and discomfort while keeping a positive attitude during what is a very trying time.
Nicole Ethridge - age 27, mother of two - Has a form of liver disease, which is causing her liver to shut down. She is near dialysis and would like you to pray for her disease to go into remission so that she can keep off dialysis and avoid a liver transplant. She asks that you pray for her continued faith and good spirits, as well as strength to take care of her children.
Caroline (age 10, leukemia recurrence) Day +1 Those beautiful, life-giving cells started to go in at 6:05pm and finished at about 10:35pm. The nurse said, "Now she has a second birthday to celebrate!" Just before the cells arrived at our room, Jeff was saying that to bring in the cells they should do what they used to do at Farell's restaurant/ice cream parlor when we were kids and it was someone's birthday. The servers would come running through the restaurant with all sorts of noise making devices and carrying a giant tub of ice cream. Oddly, right at 6:00pm the fire alarm started to go off and we joked that it was because the cells were about to be hung. There were two bags of cells and it once again struck me how generous the donor was to give of himself so unselfishly. They pre-medicated Caroline with all sorts of meds to avoid an allergic reaction or rejection and she handled the process extremely well. The benadryl they gave her put her to sleep within ten minutes and she continued asleep the whole time. Jeff and I sat by her watching for anything and everything. She did wake up around 10pm and she said she felt a little "funny," but she really couldn't describe what she was experiencing. Her blood pressure went up for a couple of hours, but by midnight was making a significant descent.
Once the second bag was placed, I started to pray. I thought of Jesus' baptism and how we are reborn through Christ. I know that this refers to a spiritual rebirth, but in many ways Caroline's bone marrow transplant is also a rebirth, a combination of the spiritual and physical. The donor's generous spirit is what Christ wants between all of us and it is that spirit that has allowed Caroline a chance for physical well-being.
Everyone's prayers, love and support are such a constant reminder of God's love for us. Thank you for your continued prayers for Caroline. We now wait for 2-3 weeks until the cells engraft and pray for no more leukemia and controllable graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD). May it be God's will that Caroline live a long and healthy life to serve Him.
We continue our prayers for Caroline's body to take the cells well, that every single leukemia cell is history, and for no or mild GVHD. I admire this wonderful family's love for each other, others, and God. Their faith, hope, and positive attitude are truly inspirational, gifts from God during this difficult time. We send you all much love and many prayers, Carmen, Jeff, and family! Thanks for supporting this dear family and for continuing in prayer for them.

Things to think about
There is more to do in the world than we can or even really want to do. This came across my desk about two years ago and then again last week. I’ve edited the story to condense it slightly:
I overheard an older fellow talking about "a thousand marbles." I was intrigued and stopped to listen to what he had to say:
"Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you're busy with your job. I'm sure they pay you well but it's a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. It's too bad you missed your daughter's "dance recital" he continued. "Let me tell you something that has helped me keep my own priorities." And that's when he began to explain his theory of a "thousand marbles."
“You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average person lives about seventy-five years I know, some live more and some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years.
Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3900, which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now, stick with me, Tom, I'm getting to the important part.
It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail", he went on, "and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays." "I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy. So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit three toy stores to round up 1000 marbles. I took them home and put them inside a large, clear plastic container right here next to my desk.
Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away. I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life.
There is nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.
This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure that if I make it until next Saturday then I have been given a little extra time. And the one thing we can all use is a little more time.”
Why are we here on earth?
God put us here on earth to make a difference. In Genesis, it is written:
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
God gave us the earth and all that is therein with the charge that we should go forth being fruitful, subdue it and have dominion over it. What then is our charge, our commandment, our instruction?
To make a positive difference in this world, our world, more importantly God’s world, which he left in our charge. So our priorities are:
1. If you are parents, your first priority is to make sure your children go to heaven;
2. Your second priority is to be there to meet them;
3. Your third priority is to prepare your children to meet this world’s challenges;
4. Your fourth priority is to provide for the needs of your family;
5. Your fifth priority is to be of positive use to your friends
6. Your sixth priority is to have fun doing the first five!
You have to take care of your country, so that your family will have an environment from which to get to heaven. You have to help your neighbors to the extent you can; recall Jesus’ summary of the law:
THOU shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
If what you are doing is in conflict with what you are charged to do, change what you are doing. Eternity stretches from the past so far we cannot see it and into the future so far we cannot fathom it. Only today, the present, where the Hand of God touches the timeline to eternity, can we exist. While we remember yesterday and hope for tomorrow, today is where we live. Always. Yesterday was, tomorrow may be, but today is. Act today. Your actions will affect your today if tomorrow comes.
So, what are you doing and how does that fit into the plan? Do you need a jar of marbles to focus your life?
Question that only you can ask
What would you like to know about our history, what we believe, what we do or how we operate? Father Acker is looking for material for the continuing education class and the Beadle is looking for Thought for the Day material. Help us help you. Please send your question to the Beadle so we all can get an answer. Just because you don’t know the answer to your question doesn’t mean you are the only one who doesn’t know. But, if you don’t ask, no one will know.
I’d like to get a different point across or announce something
If you have a different point of view, I would be happy to give you room to get your point across. While this publication is my perspective on events, I recognize not everyone may agree and that some people would like to express their own opinion.
If want to write an article or make an announcement, please forward your item to the Beadle (with a note as to whether or not you would like editing help) to the following address: thebeadle@mac.com.
St. Andrew’s Academy
Our diocese is the sponsor of St. Andrew’s Academy (Lake Almanor, CA), a K-12 operation with about three dozen students. The product is superior, the students rank in the high nineties percentile of graduating seniors. These kids are our future. They are the future of the church and the school needs to keep turning them out, not away. The economic downturn is crippling them. They have a budget shortfall of about $30,000.00. Our parish came up with $2,113.00 to donate to St. Andrews Academy.
If you have not contributed and would like to, send a check to our church treasurer, made payable to the church, marked for St. Andrews. If you need the address, email thebeadle@mac.com.
Keeping Up to Date with the Parish and the World
In an effort to keep us in touch with each other and the Christian and non-Christian world, Father is posting updates at the Thursday Evening News, oddly enough on Thursdays. This is a nice mid-week update for us, drop in and take a look. It is also linked to from the various Beadle’s Blogs.

The near future, as well as Next Sunday
Next Sunday is the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity. Come next Sunday and see if Father Acker finally tells us what the Green Season means.
What about the pre-service class, will Father Acker lose his place or will he pick up where he left off? What about the sermon? Will he preach on the Gospel or something all together different? Unless you come to the service, you will have to wait until you read the Beadle’s Report to find out.
See you next week on Sunday!
